Ok.. I came by this from another thread on self sadism.

Having been in the Dentist chair 3 times in the last 2 weeks and having gone through a goodly amount of pain...

I was shocked and a bit horrified to have read someone enjoyed being at the tender mercies of those most sadistic of bastages... Dentists. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Xm7A4GoA2s

Do you think we in the community have abetter grip when it comes to handling going to a dentist?

Either riding out the pain and being in the chair unable to move as a submissive or Over riding the pain as a Dom/me and thinking of other things.

( personaly I was dreaming of doing CBT on the dear Dr. my hours in the chair... and also about doing things to one of my boys..)

Do you think we have the abilty to cope better? And are there some sick puppies of you who actualy like going? *smiles*

I'm due to have some bad wisdom teeth pulled in the next few months. One is probably going to have to be chiseled out of the bone-it's in sideways.  I'll probably be coping the same way as you, thinking of how fun it would be to inflict on a worthy subject.

I don't know, Gwynvyd.  I don't like pain...except I like dental pain!

But then I'm weird.

ya know.. I would rather go back through child birthing pains.. then have the dental pain I have had.

I am an absoulte pussy when it comes to dental pain. LOL

I just laid very still listened to everything the Dr. told me the first time knowing it would go faster that way and hurt less.. and went to my happy place in meditation.

If the dear Dr. had any Idea what was being done to him.. and the other male of my choice. ( who is now my ex incidently as of today) I think he would not have come any where near me with the drill. LOL

He is a nice guy and all just holly Hera did that hurt.

To all of you out there reading this.. Brush for a solid 2 mins after each and every meal.. floss daily.. see your dentist every 6 months! take care of your dental issues that arise before they get worse. I put off getting fillings which turned into much worse things. Not fun!

I hope this helps someone not go through what I did.

I think I just sent one of his kids to thier 1st semester of college.

i had a tooth break....ok i've  had 3 of them break, but this is about the last one.. it broke in half and i had to have a dental surgeon remove it finally.  he was kinda iffy cause i *do* have a slight heart arrythmia, although it is benign.  he decided "ok, heart monitor" during the procedure...

and that was that.  i closed my eyes and concentrated on the sound of my heart beat and was able to block out everything that was going on in my mouth.  very cool.

Sorry you had such pain, Gwynvyd, orally and financially!

I had major dental phobia for years, after a dentist got sadistic on my mouth.  I didn't go back for years.

When I moved to the foothills, I found my current dentist.  I was embarrassed that I hadn't gone in so long but they spared me the lecture.  I told them I had been hurt and was a scardy-cat and they were gentle and awesome.  Now I still drive the distance to see him, because I just love him & his staff.  He planted and cultivated and delivered a beautiful rose bush to my mom after my dad died.  Isn't that cool??

I've been going to him for about 10 years now - he had to replace all my mercury fillings with porcelain.  He accidentally drilled my tongue once because it darted in the way (he said I have an active tongue - I said that's what I hear, lol) so he gave me a free whitening to make up for it.

When I needed a root canal, he sent me to a specialist who had a flat screen on the ceiling and I watched Finding Nemo on DVD and laughed at it while they worked on my tooth.

When I was on my East Coast trip last fall, my crown cracked off (the one on my tooth, not the one on my head), which was interesting, but didn't hurt.

But now I've come to love the feel of a good kick-ass tooth cleaning, especially when they really get deep into the gum tissue, lol.

I'm such a freak.

I doubt anyone has a "grip" on dealing with dentists....

They can be such masters of pain......
Is it safe?

(a necessity for any thread on dentists!)

I think dentists are closet sadists myself.  But there are some pretty cool ones out there.  One laughed trying to put the anaesthetic into my jaw, taking 20 minutes with massage and hot packs.  He said as how the muscle was so tight and hard, it wasn't taking.  Well, I was there because I had shattered a molar through clenching/grinding....whaddya think?  The only other memorable time was falling asleep during the cutting out of my wisdom tooth.  It just took so damn long!

They are a necessary evil, these white coated barstards.  Some good, some bad, some with video on the ceiling.  The good ones get the docile little maso-sub, the bad ones get the SAM who bites back.

Two words: Sleep dentistry. It's an intravenous sedation that almost but not quite knocks you out, even though you're awake enough to respond if the dentist needs you to you don't remember anything that was done. I it had recently when I had a wisdom tooth out and a root canal, once the drip was in I have no idea what happened next, only that I couldn't feel it. It was wonderful.
And boy do I hear you about not putting things off, if I hadn't I wouldn't be needing this much work done. I have 2 more sessions before it's all over. My Dr. is nice enough, I think he sees all the really phobic patients at the clinic so knows how to deal with it.
Before I found out about sleep dentistry I just used to listen to music on headphones and tried not to think about what was happening.

I have gotten extremely lucky with my latest dentist.  I am slowly having the mercury fillings replaced with porcelain and he uses a nerve block on my teeth to do it.  Instead of that nasty numb, drooly, swollen face feeling (which i admit in some cases is a rather fine feeling - NOT in this case however!!): it is a quick shot and i feel nothing.
I used to hate going to the dentist, but now it doesn't bother me.  I certainly am not going to clear to my schedule and make it my top priority, but at least I don't shudder each time I walk through the office doors.  Now if I can only get them to stop asking me stupid questions when their fingers are stretching my mouth wide open and I am gagging on that damn suction tubing!!!

I don't know if it's necessarially because we're in the lifestyle or not, but I know I don't have a problem with going to the dentist. I've had a cavity filled before and not had novacaine because half my mouth was already numb from it and it was only one on the other side that just had to be drilled out a bit before it could be filled. Yet I had the oral surgeon put me out when they removed the remaining three wisdom teeth. I'd lived for 9 months with 3/4ths of the crown of one my wisdom teeth cracked off and the nerve exposed because I didn't have dental insurance. After 9 months it got infected and had to come out cause I was sucking on a tube of maximum strength ora-gel. For routine dentist visits I just use a bit of self-hypnosis to space out, my old dentist in CA thought I was a little strange because when he ask'd if my mouth was numb I'd tell him I'd let him know if it got to be too much, which the first time I said that he gave another dose of novacaine for good measure.

OK, put me among the sickos who actually like going to the dentist - at least when it's the semi-annual cleaning. The pain is fleeting, and the results are wonderful, especially now that they don't use that stuff that leaves gritty bits in your mouth.

I recently had a total of 8 bad teeth pulled (the result of many years of neglect combined with diabetes), and several more filled. Novocain is great, except that its effects last far longer than is strictly necessary, and I tend to drool when it's the lower lip that's numb (TMI, I know). It isn't the pain so much that bothers me, it's the sound of the drill and that smell - the  smell of drilled dental enamel. Faugh!

If I could get them to forget about trying to numb me up I would be happier. It never works, I never get numb, and the needles and injection are just more discomfort than it is worth. After they have spent 30 minutes trying to get me numb they give up and pull the damned tooth or drill. That I can deal with, I just zone out. The pain from all the shots however is annoying for hours.

I have been knoen to be a rather bad dental patient. I have bitten doctors when they decided I was numb enough and started poking, even though I objected. I have no gag reflex and I have to be very careful about letting my dentist know when I need to spit out whatever is in my mouth, as opposed to having the knee jerk reactions they look for. I had one who wasnt paying enough attention to my motions and was waiting for the tick of the reflex, and after he didnt let me up 2 tries, i just coughed it on him. Not my fault! I had a bit of a reputation there...
But my second dentist, out in Cincinnati was by far the best one I have ever visited. Simple becasue when he was numbing you up, he suggested you bring a book or magazine. He would give you a few sots, and told you to read while you waited rather than sit there and d nothing, so you didnt think too much about the upcoming procedure. AND he had therapy dogs in the office! His dachund and shepard were both registered therapy dogs and when he let them wander the ofices, by request he would move all the equipment away from the chair and the dogs could come in and visit while you wer getting numb, to help you relax. Amazing what petting a dog's ears for 15 minues befre a procedure like that can do for one's nerves.

Ah hell Gwyn, I've got a great dentist and he's pretty good at getting me nice and numb and checking on my discomfort while he's working.  My um's even like going to see him.

What really hurts is that I need some bridge work done,,, that is going to hurt my wallet!  And yes, that is because of the childhood dentist that I had, drilling without novocaine is never a good idea.

Tell your dentist to give you a Valium first the next time you have to go see him.  Hope you're feeling better.

"The good ones get the docile little maso-sub, the bad ones get the SAM who bites back.  "...HoneyMaster is a ....dentist x 4 (meaning He is very high in the dental profession) even though He writes books and goes on speaking engagements and teaches about what it is that He does (exactly), he still ended up with the SAM. (poor guy) He's not actually a 'sadist' more of a control freak...

LOL mine's a bad-ass, who dresses in black.  He intentionally waits until my mouth is propped open and I can't talk and then asks me questions you can't just answer with "uh huh" or "uh uh"

So I bop him on the head.
