Status: offline 		I need some advice! I have a meeting at Holborn next Friday, at the ridiculous time of 9am. Luckily its not far from Holborn tube station, but the problem remains how do I get there by 9am?

The only solution really is to stay in the hotel where the meeting will take place - but at £360-00 for a room for the night, I dont think so!

Alternatively, I could stay at a hotel further out on the central line and travel in (sardine like) on the tube the next morning - but that doesnt sound too inviting.

The other factor is that I do not trust in any way, shape or form, the ability of the train companies to get me from Birmingham to London and back again - four out of the last five times theyve left me standing around and then missing the connecting train home and costing me £50-00 for a taxi. So, I intend to drive most of the way - but to not get entangled in either London traffic, or the road pricing scheme.

Anyone have any suggestions for
a) somewhere I can park (Heathrow is where I always used to park, and get the tube from there, but with my Middle Eastern appearance, I'm not sure thats allowed any more?)
b) a reasonable and reasonably priced hotel near the tube and as close to Holborn as possible?

Status: offline 		Lady Ellen, no real advice regarding places to stay, there are a few B & B's, which shouldn't break the bank. Or, you could always drive down from Birmingham to Brighton and kip on my 'put you up', the travel fare then to london/back is approx. £37 and it's only 52 minutes to London Victoria via train from Brighton. The offer is genuine, you're more than welcome.

Status: offline 		Out at Barking is a series of budget hotels ranging from between 40-60 pounds a night, Ibis, Travel Lodge, Novotel. Just look up all the chains (forget Formula 1, their facilities are soo bad). They are all near the tube station and have parking, you can then catch the tube to Mile End, change onto the Central Line to Holborn. The journey is about 45 minutes. I mentioned Barking because I lived in east London for ten years and know it well but since you are coming from Brummie Land, google each hotel chain and see if they have something in west London, I'm sure they will have.

Travelodge have a hotel at Livierpool Street, one stop away oin the tube from Holborn but that is 85 pounds per night, no doubt its that expensive because it is right in London. As for car parking, you wouyld have to phone them.

I live near Holborn, in Clerkenwell. I don't expect to be home next Thursday night, I'll be Sarf of the river but there's a cluster of B&Bs around Grays Inn Rd (near the ITN bldg) and you've also got all the business/budget chains in Farringdon Rd like Travel Inn and Holiday Inn Express etc going out towards Kings Cross. Most of those should be able to offer parking. An alternative is to drive as far as Docklands and use an hotel there. The Jubilee Line is fast and reliable and better than a cab from there.

Email me on the other side if you want and I can check some stuff out for you.

nah - what worries me, is that I park at the airport, walk through the terminal and onto the tube (instead of getting a flight or meeting someone) - this triggers some security person's imagination and when I get back to the airport later, my car has been cordoned off by the police and has been blown to bits in a controlled explosion, and meanwhile I have six armed police chasing me along the tube, assured that I'm up to no good.

Its absolutely fine to London Seeks - its the journey back where it goes awry.

Last time I decided to go to/from Worcester instead of Birmingham, believing foolishly that this might make a difference. On arriving for the train back I found it was delayed. I waited, then it came up as cancelled - I mean - cancelled? What the hell? But I knew there was one leaving from the other station to Birmingham, so with no other way of getting home I dashed outside, got a taxi, went to the other station, ran down the platform and got on that one. I had to buy another ticket (different train company), but I did get to sit after a kindly Asian guy made room for me in the crowded cattle cart at the back. On arrival in Birmingham I had to get to home, but found that because it was now late, there were no trains home - so it was outside to the taxi rank and another £50-00 to get home.

And stuff like this is par for the course.

! More seriously, I dont think its a good idea for you - OK, I might come across as normal and an interesting, wonderful person, but apparently so was Adolf Hitler socially..... Its not a good idea to have total strangers on here knowing where you live, and really I am a total stranger all in all. That might not even be my picture, I may not be coming to London at all but pitched it out there for just such an offer. You know? I could be the one who murdered her sister so that guy might show up again, at her funeral.

There were all kinds of B&B's in Earl'sCourt and Hammersmith.
