Status: offline 		As some of you know, I recently had to get the hard drive on my computer replaced.
I had it done at a place that had a good rep. Not being a tech person, and having no real idea of prices, it didn't seem unreasonable to me to get a 40gig hd for $40. I thought it would be a new one (especially since my computer, which is 7-8 yrs old, came with a 60gig originally).

Well, today,  I was running a search for 'fax', to see if there was a pc-to-fax program installed.
Imagine my surprise when 161 files came back.. at least half of which were files pertaining to highschool baseball..scouting, team rosters, etc - including players names, schools, and (I assume) school addresses.
Now, I don't know how old these files are.. but it's a good damn thing I'm not a pedophile, considering these names etc are presumably for highschool boys.
Obviously, I'm not happy.  Aside from the fact that the guy didn't tell me it would be a used HD, what pisses me off is that it wasn't properly wiped, and if some sicko had gotten it instead of me, there's INFO there that could be used in a bad way.

Needless to say, I'll be taking it back to the shop and raising some bloody hell.

If so, does it specify the hard drive was used?
They'd be putting in a brand new 60 gb for me or see me in court.
Not to mention the news...
You made a really good point regarding the minors information.

They sold you a used hard drive--if you knew it was used, then shame on them for not properly wiping the drive.

If you thought it was new--the word "fraud" comes to mind.

Status: offline 		not only did they screw up by not wiping the hd on it and not telling you that they didn't was the first mistake on their part,second mistake was not telling you it was a used hd makes it worse in my eyes. any pc people with any common sense would have told you all about that. and third if that's they way they practice business look them up on the BBB and report them and make it know that you are and have.if they still don't respond i agree take them to court.

i'd say if you don't get a call back within an hour of making your call. unplug it all and walk right in and let them know you're pissed and if they refuse..........well............you know what to do from there.

Status: offline 		Reminds me of a friend of mine, did a rent to own computer, decided she didn't like it for whatever reason. Thought she had deleted everything before taking it back.

Some very interesting photos of her and her husband were floating around that town now long after.

Another friend, computer died. Set it out for garbage on spring clean up.......more interesting pictures floating about.

Obviously most people are not computer gurus, they weren't. BUT.........there are enough computer gurus we should never assume anything.

Here, you can donate old computers to charity. They promise to wipe it clean before selling it. I still won't do it. It's not pictures I worry about but other personal info.....banking etc.

Status: offline 		I would be contacting the BBB and the newspaper even AFTER they made it " right "  I would be so concerned that this could have landed in the hands of a pedophile that I would make a stink that could be heard in the state capital at least.... There is no way this could possibly be an honest mistake ......Contact an attorny .... This is get on your soapbox time and has little to do with your computer hard drive ..   (written by a mother and grandmother)

Status: offline 		Still no call back... I'm just grateful that I kept my old HD.  Thanks for the advice, folks... I'm giving them another hour, just to give them the benefit of the doubt that theyre busy. At that point, they've blown it (well, more than they did, anyway)...

Status: offline 		Wowie, I haven't seen a 40G HD on the store shelf in 2 yrs at least.  Pretty much anything under 60 for a laptop drive, and 80 for a desktop drive is well out of its warranty period.  Around here we have a computers for kids place that wipes the old drives and reformats them.  The place that you bought that should have done that at least.  I don't know how much R&R that place gave you, but up here in Nor Cal that is pretty reasonable.

Status: offline 		I didnt know the HD size when I authorized the replacement. He didnt tell me.  I *assumed* it would be the same size (seems reasonable to me...). 

Feh. Still no callback, and I gotta go nap before work.  Tried calling again, still no answer.  I'm calling BBB before I go to bed.

Status: offline 		just talked to the guy.. he says he doesnt understand how it happened, blah blah blah... according to the BBB, they have a good rep. So on Monday, I'm taking it over for them to look at.  ideally, they'll replace EVERYTHING (and give me a matching size HD to the one originally in my PC).
