Sloppy Business practice at best .... but more like (biting tongue and keeping quiet )

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Grrrr (2/29/2008 10:38:46 AM)

there is a company here called MDG that sells used parts as new parts.  they are famous for it...they advertise on tv...you can get a computer for a buck a day...less than $30 a month... we also have playstation, xbox, wii, tv's and more!

ya all crap items that wont work after the first week of use.  well known on the newsgroups about this fraud company.

MissHarlet -> RE: Grrrr (2/29/2008 10:41:30 AM)

How do they stay in business ... maybe Im naive .. but seems that they can legally be shut down

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Grrrr (2/29/2008 10:44:44 AM)

probably some legal shit in their policy..law's always have loop holes.
theyve been around like 20 yrs now.... parents dont know about them so they often buy for their kids cause they can lease it out...where as other stores dont offer lease...they can get the other items on that same lease...so rather than paying $1500 cash they can lease out a tv, playstation 3, and computer for like $40/month

GreedyTop -> RE: Grrrr (2/29/2008 10:46:16 AM)

yep, Faery

Hi GT

I take it this is for a desk top PC?  Just a bit of info - 40 gig is oldoldold, no one really makes them anymore so it is either really old stock or they tried to sell you a reconditioned phoobie.
Maybe he bought a bulk load because they would be going cheap and try and selling them off?  I would really recommend you just get a refund and look into purchasing at least a 80?

Reminds me of a friend of mine, did a rent to own computer, decided she didn't like it for whatever reason. Thought she had deleted everything before taking it back.

Some very interesting photos of her and her husband were floating around that town now long after.

Another friend, computer died. Set it out for garbage on spring clean up.......more interesting pictures floating about.

Obviously most people are not computer gurus, they weren't. BUT.........there are enough computer gurus we should never assume anything.

Here, you can donate old computers to charity. They promise to wipe it clean before selling it. I still won't do it. It's not pictures I worry about but other personal info.....banking etc.

I find that a complete re-formatting and then complete and total destruction of the physical components tends to dissuade much of that trouble. Of course there are also fairly cheap programs you can install that utterly destroy all data on a computer.

GreedyTop -> RE: Grrrr (3/4/2008 9:56:11 AM)

feh.. called the shop this morning (thank god for skype).. theyre swamped.. suggested I bring it in on Friday.

Sinergy -> RE: Grrrr (3/4/2008 10:34:07 AM)

I used to take disc drives to the data security people where I worked.

They put them into a box, there was a horrible electrical zapping crackle and the lights in the room dimmed, and they would pull this badly charred (from an electrical charge) hard disc from the case, stamp it with "DECLASSIFIED PER D.O.D. STANDARDS" and hand it back to me.

I would usually ask what it wanted as it's last meal as I disconnected the hard disc from the computer.

Sinergy

yeah.. 110.00 total.. for the drive and the R&R.. fucking pisses me off

Damn, for a 40 GB drive? Unless you got transported back to 2003 in the process, you got really screwed. If they're that busy, i'd start discussing it with some of the other patrons in the store. Could speed the process a bit.

Personally, i use my drives until they're too old to bother with, then disassemble them... set the magnets, screws, and bearing aside for projects, toss the body in the scrap aluminum pile, and the platters get cut into pieces.

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Grrrr (3/4/2008 4:27:55 PM)

id have sold you my 160gb for $45...btw that offer is open to all...its an ide western digital internal drive.

ThinkingKitten -> RE: Grrrr (3/4/2008 5:09:59 PM)

FR:
I have a piece of totally legal software that operates in machine code to restore corrupted/destroyed data on hard drives. It's meant as a preventative measure for drive maintenance, or to act as saviour when that vital-bit-of-info-that-you-stupidly-failed-to-back-up-because-there-were-other-things-more-important-to-do-or-so-you-thought-but-now-your-life-is-over-because-its-GONE-disaster-happens to your hard drive.

I don't  think it would help much with Sinergy's buddy's method though.

Good luck with the repair shop GT.
(edited because for some strange reason hitting the space bar translated into "OK to post". Not. Grrrr indeed.
