What troubles me is that when you look at Obama, you see two colors converging in one man, giving him a 'novelty.' When I look at Obama, I see a charismatic guy who seems to be uniting the nation for a common goal. I see someone I think can really do some good in this country and someone for whom I intend to actually vote, where none have so inspired me thus far.

From what I've seen and heard from the guy, I like Obama as a person. He speaks well, dresses nicely, has good posture, and appears very charasmatic. Unlike the Jessie Jackson campaign, I just see Obama as a person. As for being 1/2 black specificly, a portion of black co workers of mine say "All of us are black, but none of us are all black. Obama is a black man but that does not mean he's going to get my vote." As a person, I like the guy. As a president, well I guess I could give him a chance. I'd like to see which promises he can keep.

this is my 2 cents: anyone who votes based on color or sex needs to be shot in the fore head. the fact that either person is this or that should mean NOTHING. pay attention to the debates, do some background checking, and make your decision based on who YOU think is the best person that can bring this country out of the slump its in. FUCK RACISM AND SEXISM.

Folks who have any black in them get called black, get treated differently, and deal with things us white folks do not experience. I am quite certain he does not find his skin color a novelty. I am sure there is not much novel about it to him at all. I am certain he attempts to appreciate the best of both sides. I doubt anyone thinks of him as white. I am sure most think of him as black. How in the heck is he going to be flip-flopping? Some blacks may feel the white part of him may not really understand the black situation the way an all-black person might. Some white people obviously dont trust him the way the would an all-white man, let's say. There are folks all over the world who are racist. There are folks who claim they dont see color. To me, that is like saying you dont hear accents. Yeah okay. Sure. I mean if all sides are respected, heard and no one is exploited, abused or manipulated, rock on! If Obama can help bring us together in peace then he is the best man for the job. Lots of Super-Human people have been half white and half black.

General reply The tragedy for Obama and his supporters is that the dream of a post-racial America is just that - a dream. A politician has to reach voters of such widely varying levels of intelligence that it seems an impossible task to bring understanding when so many are so ill-equipped to receive it. You have to wonder about the twilight world some seem to inhabit.

His stump speeches reflect classic liberal class-warfare thinking. He pits "rich" against "poor"..."government" against "people". Even as he claims not to demonize, he does. You didn't just 'discuss race', and it wasn't just an observation, it was claiming that there was something negative (i.e. 'troubling') about a person based on their not trying to pass for white. There is no such thing in this society as half and half, and you know it as well as everyone else here. Add in the untrue assertion that Obama has refused to acknowlege his white heritage, and you are getting the comments your OP deserves.

I'm sorry LS; you really have wandered off the tracks with this one! The thing is, it wouldnt matter if Obama was 1/4 black or 1/16th black; as far as the dominant culture goes, however little black he might have in him, he's seen as black - and that says such a lot about race relations in the US. And by the way, here its the same. It all seems to me to come from the strange and outdated idea that there are white people, and then there is "everyone else", and the slightest hint of genetics derived from the "everyone else" group invalidates a person next to the "superior" white group. Although, if its true that he's not regarded as "black enough" by the black community, maybe it says something about human nature rather than dominant culture? Albeit that in the black community perhaps, the same "superiority of purity" may be applied for similar cultural reasons as it seems to be in the white community. I have to ask - what the hell does it matter? None of us - or at most very, very few of us, are genetically purely of one nation, even here in Europe. To propose that ethnicity can play a part in democracy is extremely regressive at best, very dangerous at worst. And in the US - a country formed from almost every ethnic group on the planet, its totally ridiculous. And it also provides great insult to people of all ethnicities in the US, to propose that they might choose on the basis of anything other than who will get the job done best. Vote for who you think will do the job best. And in my uninvolved position, I would say that is Obama - for if he achieves little but to reinvigorate and re-inspire the US and the western world, he will have performed the job well and far better than any of his rivals could have. General ... Perhaps I look at this differently, but I kind of admire the way Senator Obama discusses race. Speaking in Wisconsin, and discussing race, the mentioned how we need to bring everyone together, white, black and hispanic. Speaking in San Antonio, he mentioned how we need to bring everyone together, hispanic, white and black, and speaking in south Houston, he mentioned how we need to bring everyone together, black, white and hispanic. Some may see that as pandering to the crowd, but I don't. We have issues with race here in America. Not good, but it is, what it is. If someone wants to take a crack at bringing us together, who are we to question his methods. It isn't like any other methods we have used are working. In the end, I would rather have someone that will address these issues, rather than someone who will ignore them on the alter of politcal correctness.

Race is a social construct; in Genetics, "race" has a very specific meaning, and the variations in the human genome do not qualify. As for CelticLord's rant about "class warfare", well, that cracks me up. The rethugs have been attacking the middle class for years.

[the anglos were afraid,] but dont be afraid. BTW the daley in the 80s is not the daley of today. i talked to a few folks who are anglo- and the spit is incredulous. do not be afraid.
