well- consider this. a company will pay 50k to NOT pay $1 in worker comp..

the regulations apply to peons- not the powerful.  the powerful send $ keeping the less powerful from getting powerful.

yrs ago- when i heard about a ruling against a US company- i thought how terrible.  now a days- i think, who cares- it is about time.

i can tell u this.  the powerful  DO worry about their wealth... when the markets get jittery they stay up all night monitoring it.

so i ask you this question. how does a peon navigate the world- stay out of the line of fire- both with thugs or guys in ties?

how?

look around in public.  unkempt ppl picking their nose- belching and hacking cough- loaded with foul toilet water- with hands not washed from the bathroom.

by nature the human is greedy.  but - a human who sees another human in need- is more likely to help then an entity.

6.5 billion on planet.  soon 7 billion.  put rats in a cage,  the more rats- the more they destroy eachother.

If you can figure out this post- you are further aead then i am...lol

Hunky, dude you come close to confusing me, but I am smart. Smarter than Judge Judy by far. In fact I would welcome a battle of wits with her, She is good at it, but I am better.

Your way of expressing yourself shrouds part of your ideas, but some people can figure it out.

The reason a company will fight a comp case is because their rates go up, and I don't know if you're aware that comp is not (or didn't used to be) reqiured. It is and always was intended to protect the employer. I think they did start requiring unemployment insurance for those on the books, so it all may be mandatory now. But it didn't used to be. However only a fool would run a factory without it.

And big business does not stay up and monitor the market, they pay others to do so. "If this, that or the other thing happens you call me". That might apply to the medium sized players, but the really big player don't worry about trends, the cause trends. They cause conditions that make them money.

And for everyone, Bill Gates is no where near the richest Man in the world, by far. No doubt he is one of the richest Men in the US, but not in the world. There are people who could buy and sell him with their pocket change, so to speak. And he knows it too.

You speak of the population ? You like to read, I have this excellent article on it written back in the 70s. I have it in my FTP somewhere but I would have to find it, it is specifically about overpopulation, and it was written when the world was not quite as overpopulated as it is today.

The problem is that it is JPGs, not texts. It is scanned from a science encyclopedia supplement. If you want it say so, otherwise I won't waste my time looking for it. It's waaaay on another account.

And one thing, why do I need to be "kempt" ? I do not believe in being kempt. I come from a time in which alot of people only bathed on Saturday night. I am serious. You even look at old cartoons of the era where a character lands in a bathtup and say "Hey, it ain't Saturday night !". I don't think people stunk as bad, but the main difference is that everybody stunk a little. Diet I think has made it worse and now they sell soap like is COMING INTO style. I do not think it is natural to soap your whole body down every day, it removes your skin oils. Your body does not produce them for shits and giggles.

Advertising has changed things. Remember the guy in the elevator "I don't bother with a deoderant soap" and all the other people say in unison "We know". This was back when there was no internet. HA, Al Gore hadn't been invented !

But people who come in here touting the virtues of alternate OSes are absolutely right. I dragged my feet, the almost dragged me in chains to get XP. Win98 could no longer find the internet because it crashed and lost some settings. I lost the disk and the company said they no longer support 98. I did a dirty upgrade, changed the install directory and moved all my stuff in, including cookies.

But before I broke down and did that, MEPIS Linux had no problem finding the net through my router and DSL modem.

XP actually is an improvement. By keeping all your files out of the windows directory, you can reinstall without losing a thing if you play it right. They made a stride in 9X with the program files directory, but now with documents and settings even being outside of windows it's even better. Even your desktop items are safe if you know what you are doing.

As far as the strong endevoring to insure the weakness of hte weak, don't get me started. That will lead to gun control and a hijack of mammoth proportion. All I can say is this, it has been going on for millenia. Anything more must go in another thread.

Anyway, would I rather buy Windows ala carte' ? Yes. I can stay with mediaplayer 7, Worpad 1, that is unitl I put my copy of Office 97 on it. And that is what I have, and if this were a brand new PC I would still have Office 97, and Encarta 96 !. It looks like they give you the newest versions of all this shit, but those are trial versions, wanna keep it, pay up.

Part of what keeps the software industry alive is the fact that there is always an upgrade, a new version, new and improved. You know I shun almost any product advertised on TV, mainly because I do not want to pay for those million dollar a minute ads. Let's put it this way, HDTV really gets it's foot in the door next Feb. You will again see TVs advertised on TV.

REALLY THINK ABOUT IT, they very rarely have advertised TV sets on TV for a number of years now. You will see it again though, touting the fact that they have the digital tuner and you don't need the box. People who know advertising did not recommend it. That will change.

I remember seeing Windows 95 advertised on TV. I don't remember seeing the subsequent versions adveritsed though, do you ?

It's simple, they have a captive market. There is a contingent of people in the world who know no other OS than Windows. Even I could not get everything going in Linux. Thing is you can't say Windows is a bad product, it may not be perfect but what is ? The problem is the monopolization and all that.

T

I have one steadfast rule about life, if it is not broke, I do not fix it.
