I heard about this around a year ago. I still think that the overall concept is a great idea, but the implementation has several major flaws.

1) The location of the vault is in a difficult area to reach, with harsh weather to deal with.

2) Those that will need the seeds will probably not be able to access them in the vault.

3)Anyone that survives whatever Doomsday scenario occurs, and knows about this vault will kill to secure the contents for themselves.

If you have any doubts about this, stop and think about it for a few minutes and take into consideration human nature.

I don't see it as viable for a world-wide doomsday scenario that puts man kind back in the stone age.  However, localized catastrophes or biological catatrophes (which IMO are more likely to happen and more likely to have survivability) could easily access the vault to restart lost species of food crops.

The problem with train of thought is that no castrophes, other than something like Katrina will be localized, especially not biological ones. There is too much travel between countries in short time spans for anything to remain local.

Why the hell should only one group of people hold the keys?

Because they're the only ones actually doing it.
Go out and collect whatever seeds you might feel like; nobody is stopping you.
The direct hit proofed, passively cooled facility on a basically uninhabited island may cost a bit, but it'd be yours.

Didn't think so.

Health,
al-Aswad.

...well, i don't have access to Monsanto's buying power....but i'll tell you who does. Local Government may not be able to buy the Congo but they can fund a small facility, just enough to hold a seed range taken from the local area. Then, in case of catastrophe, each community has somewhere to go.

Smart comment?

Didn't think so.....

Which was my point. Nobody else is doing it, at least not on such a scale. Rather than complaining about Monsanto doing it, it makes sense to do what you can yourself, whether by pressuring local government or by making a modest investment of your own.

Health,
al-Aswad.

(my italics)

...no it wasn't. Your point was a cheap jibe (didn't think so). A careful reading of my posts would lead you to know that i wasn't criticising Monsanto per se, what i was doing was suggesting a network of far more localised resources. So, making my point for me in different words hardly  merits being called a point.

It's only good if I'd be able to grow a nice crop of Panama Red to deal with all the stress of new world order.

I disagree, there are a multitude of localized and global scenarios where such a seed bank would be quite viable.

While you're right that no-one else is doing it on such a scale virtually every country in the world is doing this.  This is just the main international project - I believe the biggest investor is actually the UK.

Otay, Otay....I'm a clean up engineer and scientist.   The only biological crap I have done is the "this will kill you" crap.

I am glad to see and hear that we have well prepared collegues (sp?) thinking about this aspect of the scenario.  I am even more comforted by you telling me that there are a lot of smaller scale operations in addition to this one.   It is a good idea from a doomsday scenario and a good idea from a biological historical preservation aspect.   It is wayyyyyyy outside of my realm of expertise, but I am in total support.

Uhhh... I didn't mean to give the impression I was involved in this field professionally! I saw the news stories and it sparked an interest because I  met someone who worked at Kew (UK's national seed bank).  Admittedly, facilities like that weren't designed as precautions against "doomsday" scenarios but as you've pointed out, that phrase can be misread.

I'm a creative, not a technologist - although the two aren't mutually exclusive.

You should try Northern Lights or some of the other BC Bud strains, sweets. They make 'ole Red look like ditchweed.

Panama Red is a GREAT  song, though.
