This does happen here. I'm not an avid news watcher but in the last couple months I've heard of 4 different local incidents.

Of course, lobbing stones at the emergency services may be perfectly acceptable to you.

Of course.

Last night I lured 3 fire engines down a back alley by setting a dummy on fire and claiming it was a woman. Once lured, I proceeded to smash the windows with rocks before running off with the water hose.

I put the video up on YouTube this morning.

Does it include the part where I dial 999 for the fire service, and then run down the street with a dummy in one hand and a box of matches in the other while laughing to myself?

Of course, thats the best part.

I've never heard of such things here in the US (or from other parts of the world) before.

It does make sense, in a way.  When emergency crews are called, people may be delerious, paniced, etc.

You know, when an emergency vechile comes by, everyone on both sides of the road- even in heavy traffic- seem to clear to the sides to let it by.  Though my view of humanity as a whole is often rather cynical, I continually find it to be a beautiful act for everyone to so readily make the effort and give up the time when there's trouble to be dealt with.  I mean, sure, many of them might not actually care and be doing it because the law is compelling them, but I'd like to think that's not universally the case.

People taking out their problems with the system by acting against emergency vehicles and personnel happens often enough that I saw it several times in a few years with an ambulance crew.

People do refuse to pull over, people do threaten and even attack emergency personnel for helping the person they just injured, or for no good reason at all.  It is a big enough problem that JEMS started talking about responder self defense issues in the 80s if not earlier.

That's alright, then. Hopefully, it doesn't include the part where I'm making my get away when some, old granny tries to make a citizen's arrest on me, and I bash her with my stolen water hose.

A few years back, in Chicago, EMT's were being shot at when thet arrived in certain naighborhoods. They simply stopped going there without the police. There was a hue and cry about the people in those areas not getting proper service. When it was pointed out that the very same people never "saw" anyone shooting, it was dumped back in their laps. Low and behold the shooting stopped

In the USA, ambulances are broken into by drug addicts/dealers wanting pain medications and needles. Some Paramedics are robbed at gun point. Others get bogus calls. Once they're in an apartment, thievs will break in and steal everything as fast as possible.

As crafty and talented as these thieves are, I'm surprised as to why they can't figure out they could make more money by completing a degree and working legal job.

It's a horrid reality to see parts of humanity take advantage of those who put there lives on the line to help. Ambulance trucks are now going to have GPS and Alarm Systems. If noting else, paramedics should be trained for basic self defense and how to use a Tazer.

You are giving away all the pertinent plot points.

Like the two kids here who dropped a paving slab off a bridge into the cab of a train driver? Or the three in Northants who dropped a paving slab into the cab of a truck driver? Is that just a bit of adolescent fun? And "happy slapping" - just high jinx?

We do have kids that do that kind of shit.  I remember a young guy in Little Rock dropping a brick off of a overpass into a van driven by a mother with 2 kids.  The mother was killed almost instantly.  The kid got a long time in prison for it (I don't remember the exact sentence.)

I don't think vandals are evil.  I think that's more of "idle hands are the devil's playground."  When I was a adolescent; I was a hoodlum.  I got into all kinds of trouble.  I broke into buildings and vandalized them.  I stole things, and they were usually things I didn't need.  I would fight anyone; I didn't care if you were 7 feet tall and 300 lbs.  I was 12 years old the first time police came to my house  (between my brother and me, they came to my house all the time).  My father beat the shit out of me in front of them.  It barely made an impression on me; I really didn't give a shit.  I stood before juvenile judges on several occasions.  My father beat the ever living shit out of me on every occasion.  I never cared.  I grew up in a good, middle class home.  I never did anything serious.  But, I was a little terror until I was 17.  I hate to say it, but some young men are just like that.  They are restless, and they need ways to get rid of that energy. Of course, I am not condoning criminal behavior.  But western society has really failed in many ways with young men.

Some years ago in San Francisco there was an uproar about pizza delivery drivers refusing to go into minority areas, Hunter's Point I think it was.
They found out that the Police wouldn't go into those areas without two cars! lol
But, they expect a pizza delivery guy to go in there to maybe get a $2 tip?
We do have those incidents in this country but they are somewhat isolated.
And Fire Fighters are revered in this country and, they carry axe's.
In the city that I grew up in the cops would beat the crap out of someone for doing that. Even among the surrounding cities and towns Police they had a "reputation."

DesFIP -> RE: does this happen elsewhere in the world? (2/24/2008 1:57:35 PM)

It happened a lot more in NYC 20some years ago when there was more racial tension, less integration of the services, less sensitivity training. Even though some of the drugs around are a lot worse today, it seemed to be at it's worst when fire crews were all white, going into all black or Hispanic neighborhoods.
