As I am sitting here listening to WHAM! (I know, I know, save the jokes).  Music is such a big part of My life,  I was wondering about different musical tastes.  Here are some questions:

What types of music do you listen to most?

Who is your most loved singer or band?

What type of music can you not stand?

Is there anyone in particular that you love, that would surprise people you know?  Cuz it does not fit into the normal music range for you?

Personally, I am a huge music fan,,,very very rarely will you ever come into My home and the music is not on.  I have thousands of MP3's and still am always looking for more, I LOVE MUSIC.  I mostly listen to Reggae, R&B and Top 40.  My fave is Buju Banton, I fkn LOVE that man, lol,,,
I also really like Vybez Kartel and Beenie Man, as well as Lady Saw and Sean Paul.  Outside of reggae, I love George Micheal, and Madonna, and Eminem.  I would say, it surprises some people to know that the other type of music I love is metal.  I love Metallica, DRI, and Manson.
I can not stand country, techno, or rave music,,,,,

Oh, of course, I also love the 80's music, (like the WHAM! I am listening to now, lol)

How about everyone else?

There's nothing quite like music to stir a person. My tastes are eclectic, one moment I can be listening to Richard Ashcroft (adore that man's voice!), the next Apocalyptica. The only music I really find I cannot listen to is country pop. I listen to a lot of :

The aforementioned man
Soundtracks from movies
Anastacia
Nina Simone
Muse
Hard rock
Heavy Metal
Classical - Beethoven Rocks!
Drum & Base

Ahasver -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 6:53:33 AM)

1) Industrial, Rock

2) NIN, DM, Rammstein

3) Hip hop and almost everything they show on MTV [sm=hair.gif]

kittinSol -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 6:57:37 AM)

Electronica and dance music - the Chemical Brothers, Leftfield, Basement Jaxx, Felix Da Housecat.

The Smiths, Nirvana and a host of others from my youth (1980s-1990s music). The White Stripes are good; the Pixies are one of my very favourite bands of all times. Frank Black alone. The Violent Femmes, the Stranglers (Golden Brown: my favourite song of all time, a pop song on a waltz rhythm). Punk music: the Clash.

Bjork: she deserves a category all of her own :-) .

I love old classics - Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, the Who, the Beattles, Led Zep'.

Classical music - reminds me of my childhood (my mother's an accomplished pianist, so our house always resonated with beautiful music, though she was also partial to less conventional stuff, such as Pink Floyd and Iggy Pop).

Stuff that is played on most radio stations makes me gag [:'(] . Mass produced like laundry detergent.

Jeffff -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 7:04:24 AM)

I am all over the map on this. In the last two days I have listened to

Metalica
AC/DC
BB king Live at the regal
Yo yo Ma, the Chopin cello suites
and Thelonius Monk.

And good Friend of mine once put it as good as I have heard

" I had to be taught about left and right, right and wrong, about god, about all kinds of things. But nobody had to teach me to love music"

Jeff

I like that quote, I agree. My parents were very anti music, we did not even have a radio in the house or car.  As soon as I started to discover it on My own, I was hooked.  I have been to a million stage shows and owned thousands of CDs in My time. It just gets into your blood, you can do anything to music.  I can spend hours dancing or just laying there listening, does not matter.

Another big love of Mine I forgot to say was The Police, they were the first reggae based band I listened to!

Jeffff -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 7:11:18 AM)

No one in my family played anything. When I was 14 a bunch of us saved our money for a while for scuba lessons. When the time came I took mine and bought my first bass. I still play,  those Friends don't dive..:)

People are always surprised at my music taste, i ws totally born in the wrong generation im 21 and i adore the beatles, the kinks, the supremes and all that jazz i dont really like much modern stuff (though to be fair british indie bands are getting better)

I really dont like depressing angsty stuff, hole is a good example, I genuienly believe music affects mood, my friend whenever she feels angry plays angry music and she doesnt understand that it makes her more angry not less. There is nothing better when you feel down than putting on wonderful world or something like that to take you out of yourself a bit.

Well, when I'm working on something or just want music playing in the background it is almost always some kind of classic rock or 80's metal. Tom Petty to Dio. Eric Clapton to Motley Crue. You get the idea. But I can listen to virtually anything except a few types.

quote:

When I'm sitting down and actually listening to music I love thrash metal like Slayer. I also like darker metal like Cradle of Filth.

Hip hop, Country, the band 'Tool' and 'A Perfect Circle'. Can't stand any of it

Alumbrado -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 12:27:08 PM)

I'm a musician, not a fan, so I don't have a favorite band, style, or anything else... if I like a number, I like it. If I hear something from someone I previously liked, and it sucks, I'll say it sucks..no fan loyalty at all.

In general what stays in my collection are people who have an unusually good command of their instrument or muse...so Doc Pomus is in there with Pagannini and Adrian Legg.... Dave Grohl and Ted Nugent right along with Rachelle Ferrell, the Romeros, and Billy Novick.

CuriousLord -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 12:32:38 PM)

Genre:  Alternative.
Some bands:  Disturbed, Linkin Park, Nickelback.

I also like some old love songs.  (I guess they'd be from the 80's.)

PS-  For music I hate?  Country, folk, urban and religious.  Oh Karana do I hate Country.  Not all of it, but a good bit of it.

caitlyn -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 12:45:27 PM)

Mostly alternative and/or punk rock.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah's, Bad Religion, Radiohead, Muse ... to name a few.

I like classical music, very loud. I also like some heavy metal.

Don't care for country music, primarily because of the culture in my area.

tahlly -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 1:10:18 PM)

Grateful Dead.
Do you consider that Blues, Country, Western, Americana, Psychedelic Rock, Jazz or Classic Rock?

In the span of 3 hours, they used to cover pretty much the whole range.

Jerry Garcia. http://wemissjerry.org

CURRENTLY touring? That would be Warren Haynes/Gov't Mule *or* Widespread Panic.

I listen to some pretty fucked up shit... I dunno... If I don't like it, I'll put on something else.

Nah, but I got a Hilary Hahn at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall CD ( Sony Classical ) which my wife hates. She also hates the hardcore bluegrass stuff I listen to... The dynamic range of a an audience tape of a good bluegrass show can be enlightening, though.

I'm *currently* listening to a) Wicked - Original Broadway Cast Recording b) Candide ( the 1968 single performance in honor of Leonard Bernstein's 50's birthday, featuring Madeline Khan in her first Broadway appearance... ) ( A show "reference" tape ) and c) Grace Potter and the Nocturnals at Revolution Hall, Troy NY... ( And if anyone has the Sirsy opening set, I'd like a copy... )

Hard rock.

A toss up between old KISS, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, from more recent times.

quote:

Polka and baroque.

People that know me as a Christian are surprised that I love bands like Slayer, or Nine Inch Nails ; those that know my love of rock, are sometimes surprised that I love Chopin, Public Enemy, Jim Croce, Rodney Crowell, Alanis Morrisette, kd lang, or Miles Davis.

wkdshadow -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 4:19:10 PM)

"I listen to everything", it's true though. From classical piano(The sound of classic piano is just, relaxing.) to modern artists. A few examples would be Deftones, Sublime, Papa roach, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nine Inch Nails, Meshuggah, Mushroomhead, Slipknot, Korn, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Lacuna Coil, Metallica, Mudvayne, Nirvana, Eazy E, Slug/Atmosphere, Eminem, Snoop Dogg... what can I say, I've got wide tastes

PS: Ditto on Baroque era. Too much "articulation" for my tastes.

kittinSol -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 4:20:23 PM)

Hmmmm... I'd say apart from the piano that you have a rather specialised music list. Au contraire, mon cher.

wkdshadow -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 4:26:38 PM)

I suppose rereading what I named, it does appear that way. Most of my playlist is 90s-2000s, but I've got plenty of  variety like REM, Led Zeppelin, Benny Goodman, Sonny Greer, Bob Marley, Augustus Pablo, so on and so forth. What I listed is just what's in winamp right now.

kittinSol -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 4:31:01 PM)

It's really hard to come up with faves right off the batt like that - bound to forget a few.

FangsNfeet -> RE: Music (2/22/2008 4:32:51 PM)

Have you ever thought about doing a google on Music Therapy?

Interesting stuff to see how music is used for the sick and depressed.
