OK I finally did it, I went and bought my very own computer directly from the store for myself.  This is a first for me- my mother bought my previous two for me as gifts and my last one I bought from her as a refurb from her work.

It's an Acer Aspire and perfect for me and my basic needs.  The local CompUSA has been going out of business for months and we're finally down to the last days.  I saw it, it looked great, got approval from my boyfriend and my geek guru roommate, so I did it.

Now I need a new monitor since my old one isn't good enough :)

LA, I bought a new "E-Machine" computer not too long ago myself.
It says "Made in Framingham, Mass" on the back of it.
Where was yours made?

Yay!  Thanks.  Today I dragged my partner to six stores to do comparison shopping for a new monitor and ended up with exactly what I wanted at a fabulous price.  A nice surprised after a crappy day.  So now I'm on my nifty cool computing type machine thingum.

I am getting ready to buy a new one too.  I am giving my old one to my brother.  I have been looking at the Dell XPS One.  It looks really cool, and it would definitely get rid of all the wires I have hanging behind my computer now.  I'm afraid to say that I am not much of a expert on the subject.  So I really don't know how good they are.  I have been reading some pretty positive reviews here and there.

You are such a riot.  Look closer, while is may say "made" what it should accutately say is "assembled".

Sorry to burst your "made in the USA" bubble, but if you start doing a parts inventory you will trace most of those parts back to China or a parts foundry in Tawian.  If you wanted something with a higher percentage of American made parts you would have to move much higher up the food chain that an eMachine.

Ya, very little is actually made 100% in the US anymore. Especially electronics.

Congratulations LA!!! I remember how excited I was when I got my first computer and THEN, my very first laptop this last year. Now I don't know what I would do if I had to go back to a desktop. New electronics are so much fun!

I purchased a new XPS dell in November.  So far no issues really at all.  Other than a virus I got.  Of course I had to battle it on my own...the virus programs hadn't heard of it yet.  Although that is not the computers fault.  I could blame it on someone but I won't.  It didn't help matters to have someone come home from work each day and try to help..while downloading more virus to me.
My dom/husband and I are a good couple when it comes to computers.  Yet, I am the desktop person and he is the behind the scenes server person.
Anyway my last few computers I built from the ground up.  The XPS was a very good deal for the money and with the right software quite a bargain.

Bought an Emachines last year or so. P4 quite high in gigahertz, gig of RAM, 200 gig HD, DVD burner.

Also got a TV card with NTSC an ATSC tuners and the convertor for the monitor output to connect to a TV. We ar HD ready. Don't need no stinkin box.

But just how bad do we need the TV output convertor with a 19" monitor ? Flat screen mercury vapor lit and very nice color.

When I opened it to install the TV card I was quite pleased by what I saw, standard ATX form factor, none of this ducting the fan from the power supply to the processor like Compaq likes to do. It looks like a PC I would build. Full size case, plenty of PCI slots, and even though it has onboard video, it has an AGP slot.

All that including a router and a 75' CAT5 cable came to about a thousand bucks. Can't beat that with a stick.

I can't complain, but that is the reason I stopped building PCs, I just can't compete.

I hope CompUSA's in general aren't going out.  =/  I have such fond memories of them.  I used to go to them with my father and get parts to assemble new computers with.  It was a mutual hobby, and because many of them went to his law firm, he could justify the time as working.

Ah wells.  It's a shame to hear about that business having troubles, but congrats on the new computer!

Congratulations on the new puter, MS Vista or XP ?

I got my first new puter a month ago, a HP 530 lappy, don't know how good, (or bad) it is, but it fitted my budget, and it was Centino dual core processor, Intel being what I was seeking.

Not particularly HP about the operating system though, still, it might be teething troubles.

Tech Guru suggestion to all seeking new computer hardware-

Buy Dell as it provides service, and great payment options. Get a better computer for the money rather then bargain shopping.
Pay extra to get XP rather then VISTA. Vista is horrible, takes up more space on the harddrive, and slows the computer down. You will find that it is not as user friendly as XP.

Yes, Vista is surprisingly slow, much slower than XP from what I remember and I only have 1GB of  RAM, two for this OS would be better.I am a win 98 se user, and I will say win 98 is easier to use, when I thought vista would be miles better.

Anyhows, I believe I have a licensed copy of XP PRO coming soon.

Yeah, it's a good point that 98's faster than XP which is faster than Vista.

I didn't mind the speed loss to XP at all.  Better hardware more than made up for it, and the vastly increased stability made it a hands-down victor for me.

But my XP doesn't crash.  At all.  Despite constant use for years.  So Vista can't give me the same thing, even assuming it's also extremely stable.  Therefore, I'm curious.. what does Vista offer besides the prettier graphics for today's users?

safety and more stability then XP (for a new OS this is the most stable release ever for a windows versioN)

I use Vista with SP1, 2 gig memory, and dual core AMD 4600+
but XP SP3 is soon te be released.....might dual boot and compare both.

If you buy a new dell....then it sure should be able to easily run Vista
And all new OS-es need adjusting..I remember I cursed at Xp when I switched from 98se.
I switched 10 times...till I got used to XP..

Started a new thread about it, since I am confused about the Vista hype.  While it might be better to say there, what's the advantage security-wise?
