Ok. So we have: 1.) Topping from the top 2.) Topping from the bottom 3.) Bottoming from the top 4.) Bottoming from the bottom Are you only a "true" dominant if you only do #1? What if you only do #2? What does that make you?

It depends on if everyone is open and happy about it. Topping from the bottom can be a great way to teach a top a new skill. The problem comes when there's lack of agreement and manipulation.

Around here, bottom and top applies to the M & S parts of the equation. As noted, you don't even address the question of D & S in your original post. B & D don't even enter into it. Relevant true story: a specialist hereabouts gave a senuous caning demonstration at Paradise Unbound last year (formerly Wet Spot in Paradise). A dominant physical masochist volunteered to be his demo bottom for the occasion. Late in the session, she reared up on all fours and said, in a voice of absolute iron, "Harder! and don't stop!" And she wore a truly spectacular array of striped bruises and welts on her ass and thighs with considerable glee for the rest of the event. Bottom doesn't mean submissive. Top doesn't mean dominant (the gent giving the demo is a sub). And switch is a label all too often used to exclude.

Its a hard concept to deal with if you don't have first hand experience with the idea.

The problem I seem to have is the submission (not all by any means) having a problem doing those activities seen as "topping". Mistress: Spank my ass! Submissive: No Mistress, that means I am dominate to you! I just can't do that, it will disrupt my submissive status. Mistress: Oh damn! Not another one! Go to your corner! She places dominance and submission along one axis and sadism and masochism along the other axis. So the different archetypes are: dominant sadist, dominant masochist, submissive sadist, submissive masochist. For the purpose of that discussion, top and bottom are represented by sadist and masochist. There may have been another category for being along one axis only (a dominant who is not a sadist, a submissive who is not a masochist, etc)--I am unsure.
