Barnabas, I believe.

LOVED that show!

Certain episodes of Twilight Zone creep me out (which never stops me from watching it...). One episode in particular, that I saw when it first aired, was about a little girl that fell through a hole in her bedroom into another dimension. Her father had to get her before the portal closed.  That episode gave me nightmares for YEARS!

Gwynvyd -> RE: Dark Shadows T.V. series. (2/20/2008 10:15:44 PM)

I loved Dark Shadows... both of them.

Dan Curtis(Series Creator and Producer) had a dream in which he saw a young woman riding a train to an old gothic mansion. The woman in his dream would become Victoria Winters. Dark Shadows was also based on a previous work by Art Wallace(Story Creator and Writer), "The House", a teleplay about a reclusive woman who's husband had been missing for many years. This woman would become Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, and the house would become Collinwood.
The first few months of the series centered around Victoria Winters and the search for her past, but then a couple of ghosts appeared, then a Phoenix, and finally a Vampire named Barnabas Collins. The show became incredibly popular and has since refused to die.
Dark Shadows Premiered on ABC June 27th, 1966 and aired 1225 episodes until April 2, 1971.

  Dark Shadows at the Movies
In 1970 Dark Shadows became a feature length motion picture in "House of Dark Shadows". It was heavily adapted from the TV series plot lines with one major twist, Barnabas Collins is destroyed at the end of the film. "House of Dark Shadows" was followed in 1971 by "Night of Dark Shadows", the film adapted some elements from the TV series but also contained a great deal of new story. It is widely believed that far too much material was edited out of the final version, making a rather confusing film that leaves you wondering what the characters' motivations were. Plans for a third Dark Shadows film were made but it never materialized. In recent years Dan Curtis has once again shown interest in the possibility of a new Dark Shadows film, however nothing firm has developed.

 Syndication
Dark Shadows was resurrected in 1975 and aired in syndication on various local TV stations and PBS until 1990 when the Sci-Fi Channel purchased exclusive rights to air the show.

The 1991 Series
Dark Shadows crawled back to life(briefly) on NBC in a completely new series with a new cast which took many plot elements from the original series. However, this incarnation of Dark Shadows was darker, and the production was more extravagant than the original series. After a very short run, the series was canceled. Dark Shadows aired on NBC From January 13th to March 22nd 1991.

i use to watch this show everyday and had the biggest crush on Barabus .

DomKen -> RE: Dark Shadows T.V. series. (2/20/2008 11:07:03 PM)

What has always amazed me was that this was a daily "soap opera." I know tv was more experimental back then but suspense/horror in the afternoon?

It's coming out on DVD BTW. Note that if you're interested in the show pre vampire you want the DVD collections subtitled "The Beginning." Good stuff if not quite as good as after Barnabas shows up.

Barnabas MADE the show, IMO

Lashra -> RE: Dark Shadows T.V. series. (2/21/2008 2:55:48 AM)

I loved that show and I remember as a kid running home from school just to see it. I was in the Barnabus Collins fan club too. It was a great series and in my opinion the best "soap opera" ever done. I love horror what can I say? [:D] The movies were good too from what I remember.

Yes.  Dark Shadows was the only soap opera that I ever watched.  What gave me chills way back when seemed really silly when I saw a rerun a few years ago.  But it was good for it's time.  Angelique and Quentin were my favorites.

bipolarber -> RE: Dark Shadows T.V. series. (2/21/2008 5:35:08 AM)

Mmmm... I remember the subplot about Barnabas being bound inside an alcove, and then walled up, al la Edgra Allan Poe's "A Cask of Amontiallo." (Great way to keep Johnathan Frid in the storyline while he went on vacation for a couple weeks...) Anyway, that just worked on me as a kid... but them most depictions of bondage on TV did... Dark Shadows, Batman, The Avengers....

SubbieOnWheels -> RE: Dark Shadows T.V. series. (2/21/2008 6:11:04 AM)

I remember being happy when both parents were out so I could watch the show. Unfortunately this didn't happen very often (about once a week), but I would sit in front of the TV shivering whenever I could sneak in an episode. Barnabas was my absolute favorite. Even today a picture of Jonathan Frid makes my heart race.

Nosathro -> RE: Dark Shadows T.V. series. (2/21/2008 9:32:15 AM)

Yes Dark Shadows was my favorite I ran home just to watch it.  Barnabas was chained inside his coffin.  Another Actor who was called Trask was the one who was sealed inside a room if I am not mistaken.  And there is a Dark Shadows Convention later this year where I live, I can't wait.

That opening tune/bumper music,so F`n spooky.

sweetwenchie -> RE: Dark Shadows T.V. series. (2/21/2008 9:48:16 AM)

Dark Shadows was the only Soap Opera i would watch.  Loved it, along with any other creepy scary show or movie i could find.

SciFi started playing DS again, and i had to laugh... now it just looks a bit silly rather than creepy.  i think i have become... jaded in my old age. [8|]  That, or too used to movies relying on special effects more than the script itself.

Isn't this being redone as a movie with Depp? I know I stumbled over a conversation about this on a paranormal erotic romance list a few months ago.
