The core issues on which the GOP has always run (limited gov't, low taxes, high moral standards) just don't ring true anymore. For the twelve years in which the GOP was in control of Congress there was a complete breakdown in civility and bipartisan legislative process. Republicans came into Congress ringing the mission bell and promising revolutionary changes. But far from ending an imperial Congress, Republicans centralized power in their leadership to an unprecedented level, and then ceded most of their authority as an independent branch of government to the Bush Administration. For almost six years the GOP-led congress was a rubber stamp for bush's policies, while they pushed budgets laden with pork for their respective districts. From bridges to nowhere, to money laundering for gerrymandered districts, to Mark Foley's sexual escapades, it became overwhelmingly clear that the GOP just cared about staying in power irregardless of the cost. Americans don't like truth-tellers, but they hate hypocrites more.
