Thank you all for sharing and your marvelous answers.
I am enjoying reading all your stories and information.
There is so much more to live and relationships, besides the BDSM aspect.

As many of you have pointed out, if you care and love your partner, you will
help and support them in being as healthy as they can be.
Funny thing is it was MUCH easier for me to give up meat than cut down on carbs.

MzMia,  first off...congrats on eating healthier.  As for your original question, it's fairly easy to answer.  Because both of you should be eating healthy anyway, having one stay off junk food to assist you in your healthier diet should be a moot point.  A sub/Dom/partner of any sort should not have to totally rearrange eating habits and cooking habits to assist a healthier lifestyle.  If they do, it means they were eating crap to begin with.

My man is diabetic, a few pounds over what he should be, and a chronic package-eater...comes from being a single guy I'm told.  ;)   I am a personal trainer and (usually) eat healthy as just a matter of lifestyle.  The changes my man made to his diet were pretty severe when you look at it....from beef 6 days/week to mostly chicken and fish with beef being a treat when we go out.  Lotsa pasta to virtually none, very little rice or potatoes, almost no snackies in the evenings at all anymore.  But he did it and I admire him and give him all the credit for it.  After a few weeks of this plus exercise (gasp! shock!) it has become routine and just another day.  He's finding out now that to eat any greasy fried foods or heavy pasta will make him feel like crap because his body can't handle it anymore.  It craves the healthy stuff.

MzMia, you don't have to do all kinds of life-altering stuff in order to maintain a healthy diet (and still be happy with what you eat) and deal with Type 2 Diabetes.  Smart shopping, smart cooking, a bit of planning, throw in a bit of exercise and you may find out your body will love you for it.  Back to your OP:  YES, damn it!  Your live-in sub should support you and assist you...and if that means altering his/her lifestyle to fit your healthier one - so be it.

Thank you so much!
So many encouraging folks here.

As I sit here drinking my black coffee, it is getting better.
Hopefully, in a few weeks it will get easier.

Your Master is Blessed to have a submissive like you, I should be so lucky.
Take care

My sister stopped eating meat for some years; chicken, fish, veggie meals okay. Her husband loves red meat. He was fine with them going out a couple of times a week where he got to eat what he wanted and she ate what she liked. It always seemed to me to be the right solution. In the meantime, as she was losing weight because of dietary changes, he also lost his spare tire. Also a win-win solution.

In the US, we are facing a national epidemic of obesity and diabetes.  By and large, the culprits are white thangs (sugar, pasta, rice, flour, potatoes and even milk.)  Who knew the cause of diabetes was an over worked pancreas brought on by regular over-saturation of sugar.  Who knew a slice of bread dumps more sugar into the bloodstream than does a spoonful of pure sugar?  The ‘white stuff’ is what is what is causing our ill-health.  We must cut our carbs!  If I were to find a sub who found it difficult to eat this way, I’d probably loose interest in the boy purely for his lack of interest in a healthy lifestyle.

But, that’s just me.
MsB
(who is still down the 15# (over about six weeks) and still keeping to the ‘new’ diet, but has only increased the loss by about a pound, dammit!   I need to move more…)

PS:  Mia, I would consider that you remember we are what we think.  You said you are 'pre-diabetic.  If you not planning on actually contracting the problem; why not say you have temporarly high blood-sugar levels and are working to change that?  It would do your body good!!!   <smiles>

Okay Masters!
Question!  What IF you have a submissive that had to alter the way she ate the rest of her life?

Yes

quote:

Would you be willing to drastically change how you ate, so that you could both be healthier?
Would you cut down on sugar, rice, potatos, pasta, all damn carbs in general, etc. and support your partner by willing to eat the way she has to eat?

yes...

one of the changes that is occuring in my household... is our eating habits.  Besides a desire to eat better and healthier.  There is a differences in eating habits that Kyra brings to the household.  Naturally we all are changing our eating habits to a common ground for each other and because we are changing anyways.. we all are making the effort to make the changes towards a more healthy and balance eating lifestyle.

It's not just for the betterment of one individual in the relationship... but the betterment of THE relationship.

Well MsB, the doctor has labeled me pre-diabetic, and I will have to watch
this the rest of my life.
If not?  I will end up on pills or insulin.
Since, I will have to watch it the rest of my life regardless, I don't mind the label.

I am actually hypoglycemic which means my blood sugar level drops low and then could
go high.
We all have to live with "labels", I don't mind the pre-diabetic, one.
Congrats on the 15 pounds!

KOM! Congrats on the healthy living household.
It is the way to go!

HeavansKeeper -> RE: Masters would you alter your lifestyle/dietary habits? (2/17/2008 10:11:27 PM)

Dearest MzMia,

My Pet decided to start eating kosher not long into our relationship.  She is doing it for dietary reasons (to make her think "do I REALLY want to eat a cookie? That means no steak tonight....") not religious reasons.

I supported her choice.  Although she said she would prepare whatever dishes I desired, she asked respectfully that she not be made to eat anything in violation of the diet she chose.  Outside of punishment for serious offenses, I could never conceive a reason why I'd make her violate her diet.

I suppose the same would apply if the diet were pre-diabetes, low blood pressure, low carb, whatever.  If I also should be on a restrictive diet I would think there is strength in two.

With eating kosher, I told her I would try and join her cause.  I was unable to keep it up.  I simply love crab, shrimp, and the cheeseburger too much.  (I did give up pork, but that was a different thing). I honor her choice, but I did not follow.

If it was a health concern to me aswell, I would have tried harder.

Specifically to what was mentioned in early responses: No, I would not require duplicate meals.  If I wanted seafood, we'd have fish (as opposed to shrimp or crab or lobSTAR!)  If we had burgers, I'd pop on my own cheese.

In short, I do think one must be supportive if it will work.

Edit: Pasta is low glycemic. =)

You are so dang sweet!

Kana -> RE: Masters would you alter your lifestyle/dietary habits? (2/17/2008 10:15:59 PM)

As a quick answer yep, I sure would.
If I expect discipline from her I better lead by example.
And ya know what, I make sacrifices for those I care for, thats part of the deal as far as I am concerned.
I might not change completely( as in eating lunch at work when she is not affected by it), but when with her I most likely would alter what I eat if its for her health and general good.
Hell isn't that a big part of being a Master, looking out for what is in her best interests?

BlackPhx -> RE: Masters would you alter your lifestyle/dietary habits? (2/18/2008 5:57:39 AM)

There are things that Master won't eat and I don't cook them when he is home. Obviously when he is on the road, he eats whatever he wants or can get when he is through for the day. This is not always healthy, Fast Food could lose the letter "s" to be more accurate, but he does his best. We still have our deserts, and our carbs with every meal, they are a necessary item in a healthy diet. I control the portions I get of them very tightly, but mashed potatoes, spaghetti, fresh baked bread, even cakes and cookies, etc are still on the menu. Limited amount, limited number of times a week for the sweets, but there. Cutting things out completely can lead to failure and binge eating, as my Doctor said, cutting them back to the level of treat is far easier.

Exercise helps. But can I put what may seem an obvious but often over looked point of note here? Any sort of pain play, including being on the other side of the whip, is going to burn calories and blood sugars. I have noticed over the past 15 years that the harder I play the harder the Blood Sugar drop..keep juice, candies or easily converted carbs to hand when playing.

tsatske -> RE: Masters would you alter your lifestyle/dietary habits? (2/18/2008 6:12:04 AM)

I wsa a healthy 18 year old when I married my first hubby, to whom I was not even submissive to. He had been vegitarian in the past and was interested in it. We compromised and became vegitarian every year at lent, except for the years I was preggers, which was a lot of them. Yes, I know pregnant vegitarians can do well, I just couldn't convince my doctors. I was less obiedent to husbands back then, and more obiedaint to doctors.
Now I am diabetic. I know Master eats whatever he choses when apart from me. He eats things that are not approprate for me here, too; I do not have a problem with that. Sometimes I steal a bite, but not often. But the meals we have together, I simply make good meals that are aproprate to my diebettic needs, but can be enjoyed by both.
I am a WW girl, and I have no trouble making meals that do not 'look' or 'feel' to him like we are dieting.
I have had other problems. Since going on insulin, I have lows and crashes that I am having trouble learning to control, but there are ways to manage anything.  I can go into any resteraunt and find approprate things to eat. (good teaching from WW). We had company one night, and I served a virtually carb free dinner, without thinking about it. So, an hour later, while we are sitting about chatting, it is becoming obvious to me that I am diving (sugar wise). Now, if it is just me and Master, I will ask to get a snack, and rather he choses to join me in one or not, he knows what I need to be safe. But I am not going to eat chile company is not eating. I found a drink in the house with suffficent carbs and joined our company back in chatting.
I have had dives in resteraunts before. I generally place my order and then excuse myself to go to the little girls room and shoot up. If they take until christmas to bring food, that means I will dive, sometimes, even crash. Master justs calls the waitress over and asks for a basket of bread, and, once, when it was bad (well, we were in an African resteraunt, to be honest, I don't think thier bread has many carbs in it), he had to request that the waitress bring me a sugar pop. But, all things are managable. I think he notices the effort to manage my health and deal with the damn insulin a lot more than he notices any changes in his diet, to be honestl. Just make them subtle and no one should even notice.
And, what blackpheonix said. Even if we go to a hotel, I stop by the coke machine and buy a sugar pop, in case I drop from play. I did this even before I was insulin dependant, and, prior to insulin, I almost never had drops, or, hell, even lows - except from being sick, injured, or from playing. Those things can mess with your sugar. Even now, I notice that the 'number' at which my sugar feels like a dive to me is slightly higher if I am sick, over tired, overworked, over stressed, ect. Always keep a sugar pop in the house for emergencies. We buy cocacola in 100 cal cans so that, if I have to use one, I will know exactly how many carbs I am injesting. Sugar pop is for emergencies, though.

When one of my boys was on a low carb diet to lose some weight some of the meals we would have would be able to be eaten by both of us with just fixing one extra thing.  For example when we would have pasta with a meat sauce I would get the pasta (humm, carbs good ) while he would have his meat sauce over some type of squash or something else.  Yes it did involve a bit more cooking, but not really that much just one more pot or pan and worked very well for us.
