What a match - Man U handed Arsenal a lesson in how to play football this afternoon at Old Trafford, in the FA cup knockout competition.

I would feel bad for Arsenal, but they are a London club (and so to be despised, of course) and I've supported Man U since 1975, so all I can offer is my most insincere apologies for loving every minute of watching the Londoners get their Arsenal handed to them!

In other FA cup action today, lowly Bristol Rovers beat Southampton every which way round the pitch and got through to the quarter finals for the first time in 50-odd years. And Liverpool got knocked out too, by another low ranked team by comparison, Barnsley.

Shaping up to be some interesting matches in the next round

Aren't you from Birmingham or somewhere? The football club is supposed to represent the people of the town/city - it's part of the social fabric of a town/city. Can't you armchair types who latch onto our game just watch golf or something?

It would be far more interesting if the corporates, media and armchair fans didn't hijack our game.

Its nothing personal RL

There's a hierarchy you see

if its an international match, then I support England against anyone. If England arent involved then I'll support one of our other home countries (Scotland, Wales, N Ireland and Eire), if thats not an option then its Germany. Similar with domestic football - if Man U are playing then I want them to win, if theyre not playing then its a Midlands club I'll support.

If none of my support options are available then I want one side or the other to lose. Any London club playing I want to lose, unless its a European competition when I will want the London club to win. If no London club is playing then I generally want the superior team to lose.

Its a psychopathy probably, but thats how football fans seems to work.

Nearby NG - but having broken my granddad's heart when I was six - preferring a Man U kit to a Wolves one for Christmas, I think it would be a little off of me to now abandon the gut instinct choice made so early on, dont you? Its hardly my fault Man U became so successful and having lived in Stretford for a while I have as much right as anyone anyway. And a lot more than the foreign players who make up much of the team!

Besides I thought everyone knew that all Man U fans come from outside Manchester. The owners love that club so much they travel all the way from the US to see the games, now that is dedication.

You obviously don't live here, pal, and have been listening to too many old wives tales from your contacts outside of Manchester, who, of course, are well placed to fill you in seeing as they don't live here.

Manchester is a football mad city with around 1 million people here - I'd estimate 65% are United and 35% City.

Those figures are wrong because you forgot the portion of people that hate football altogether and there are always some no matter how few. So I take it you support City?

You have the right to do as you please, and I have the right to tell you that the soul has been ripped out of the game by people who don't understand that football is a) the working man's game and b) part of the social fabric of the town/city.

Soccer!!! I tried to get into it, but the lack of scoring reminded me of watching a spanking where the Dom is giving it their all but the subbie doesn't move or make noise and their butt cheeks don't turn red.

I live in Manchester, but I'm not from here so I don't follow City or United.

But, I'm well placed to say that the reason why clowns from Dorset etc are inside football grounds is because they have a spare 40 quid in their back pockets.

Clearly Arsenal didn't have their full team. It was obvious they weren't putting in 100% and that was a tactical decision as they are saving themselves for the league.

Youre watching the wrong teams and/or games

Youre watching the ball and not whats going on around it - its actually more interesting to watch whats going on away from the ball

Goals are not the be all and end all, but theyre great when they happen

If footie isnt in your blood, then thats OK. But if it is then it is. Its not something that you can have as a passing interest.

I'm the eternal optimist - Arsenal is the team my son supports, my boy and I caught the match early this evening. I've seen more effort from a team of pensioners!

Got me bun, PS?

Depends where the other is being kept while I'm eating the first... if it's the same place as in the joke in my journal, i'm formally declining and there'll be no talk of force-feeding here

You might regret that decision... you haven't been drinking alcohol, I trust, Politesub?
