LadyEllen -> smoker? apply for your permit or stop (2/15/2008 12:46:08 PM)

Well, I just heard the best one yet - some professor from the LSE (London School of Economics - home of many nutjobs) has proposed that smokers be made to apply for a permit annually, in order to be able to purchase tobacco products. No permit, no purchase. The idea being that the effort to apply for a permit will put some off and so stop them smoking.

Professor Nutjob is clearly a very deep thinker.

He is suggesting the government get to assemble a database of people who smoke - including of course those who acquire tobacco to mix with certain other smokable substances, substances which I believe are rather popular at the LSE..... substances which are about to be reclassified as dangerous illegal substances.

He is ignoring that the country is already flooded with smuggled tobacco products from Europe, where the cost of a packet of cigarettes is as low as 80p (against £5-00 here with the duties and taxes) - and people who dont want to apply for a licence will simply increase this illegal supply as they move to it.

He is though, its nice to know, firmly of the opinion that such a system could and would never be extended to control the purchase of alcohol or to control the overweight from buying the wrong sorts of food (as determined by some other Professor Nutjob, presumably).

I am of the opinion that nutjobs should be forced to apply for a licence to speak publicly. If the argument is that smoking is bad for me so I must be licensed, then it follows that since his spouting off nonsense like this is bad for his health (since it incites others to want to beat him severely), he should have to get a licence too, to inhibit him from such behaviours.

Sheesh! A wack job!
Ciggys are 5 pounds  a pack in England?
They're $21 for 200 here.
Seeks, want to go into business?

pahunkboy -> RE: smoker? apply for your permit or stop (2/15/2008 12:58:28 PM)

...I know a person flagged by online cig purchases- the state actually sent him a tax bill. if he doesnt pay i suppose they will get a lien. this person had bought for freinds...the tax bill in the thousands.

the govt is screwy- so ill give u that.  meanwhile, why cant i have clean air?  highway fumes ..and now back yard burning seep into my home.  soon we will all need astonuat suits to live in our own home!  im not even sure if an oxegyn tank would help in my case.

why cant a DL or passport be for life???  yet a corporate charter is good for infamy.   per haps i should declare me a corporation and stake my claim. i still say if a sunset could be trademarked it would be, and dont even get me started on monsanto putting ecoli into crops! [unless royalty is paid to unlock the dna]

Playing devil's advocate here, Ellen.

Smoking isn't just bad for you. Its also bad for anyone you subject to the second hand smoke you breathe out. So, bearing that in mind perhaps permits should be required for the consumption of any substance that could be harmful to others. Then we can actually legalize various other illegal substances and require permits for those too. The alchohol thing, I'm not so sure on. I mean ... It becomes dangerous when people do stupid shit like try to drive while they're under the influence so maybe a permit for that would be appropriate as well.

As for overweight people, who for some reason are being lumped in with "addicts" now, I think thats a silly argument. Overweight people are hurting themselves but unless you count toxic farts (which skinny people can produce as well) they're not really a danger to anyone else.

Gwynvyd -> RE: smoker? apply for your permit or stop (2/15/2008 1:13:58 PM)

Geez.. they are even worse over there then here. And that is hard to do! Next thing you know you will have a camera in your WC to be sure you wipe front to back... A ticket will instantly shoot out, and some guy will shout out things at you if he sees any improper wiping going on.

If you want ciggies.. buy them, pay the taxes.. and have at. just dont smoke them around me.. and we will be cool. ( I am allergic as hell to them )

If you want booze or food, get me some.. and have at as well.

I don't see where consentual things like those need to be taken away, or monitored so much by the govt. it is just plain stupid.

He should be thrashed soundly.

Gwyn,
I am not a number, I am a free woman!

$21 a carton, Popeye?  Are those the cheap cigarettes or name brands in SC.  I spent $34 for a carton of Winstons yesterday, and that was in a discount tobacco store.  I usually use coupons, but I haven't been getting that many in the mail lately.  I can't smoke the cheap, cheap brands.  They are just horrible.  The cheapest method I could find was rolling your own cigarettes with a machine.  You can get a carton that way for about $20.  But, that is a pain in the ass.

popeye1250 -> RE: smoker? apply for your permit or stop (2/15/2008 1:46:58 PM)

Slaveboy, yup, that's for a carton of Winston 100's, no cheap "no-name" brands.
They're $20.88.

Damn!  I need to move to the Carolinas.  I knew they were cheaper there, but that is unbelievable.  They just tax the shit out of them here.  We don't have it as bad as other places though.  The Tennessee state police has undercover guys sitting on the border near Memphis here waiting for people to cross into Arkansas and make bulk purchases.

Lady Ellen, I like them.  They don't have additives in them like other brands, and they are to the strength of my liking.  I think American cigarettes that are manufactured abroad use different tobacco blends.  I don't think they use American tobacco.  I have smoked some cigarettes that friends have brought back from their trips abroad, and they seemed harsher to me even when they were an American brand.

GreedyTop -> RE: smoker? apply for your permit or stop (2/15/2008 3:25:41 PM)

meatcleaver -> RE: smoker? apply for your permit or stop (2/15/2008 4:14:17 PM)

Since this is another smoking thread, I'm going slightly off topic but not completely. There has been a study in Holland and it found that smokers and obese people don't cost the health service money, it is healthy people that live longer that cost the health service excess money. Smokers and obese people usually die suddenly or after very short illnesses. People who keep themselves healthy, live longer and consume more medical care and when they get ill  they tend to linger and have long illnesses which consume expensive healthcare. The irony is, this study was set up to see how much unhealthy living cost the health service and it found out that smokers and obese people subsidise the healthy. There has been a call for the reduction of tax on tabacco but the government isn't listening, they want their tax all the same.

I am a regular moderate drinker and have never smoked in my life . It just makes me want to kick somebody's arse when I see people being forced to stand outside a pub on these cold winter nights just to have a smoke.
Altogether now...its the PC brigade. Fuck 'em I say.

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: smoker? apply for your permit or stop (2/15/2008 4:53:24 PM)

there is a law here that may come about where you cant smoke in your car if there are kids in it.

if you think what your saying here will stop people from smoking? your wrong...it will just create more crime.  who the fuck will get a permit? really... how many conveinence stores will actually ask you if you have your permit? they wont give a shit...they just want $$$$ thats why they sell to minors without asking for ID.  thats why i also think its stupid that booze is in these same stores which they are trying to get done here in canada.

oh and ive never touched the stuff...booze or cigs...waste of $ to me.

I smoke Bronco's at $16.99 a carton.   Taste like Marlboro's to me.   Very little difference.

Slaveboy   I agree with you.   When I was in Europe and Africa many moons ago, there was a major difference between the taste of American Brand names from the US and on the local ecomonmy
