Now I'm the first to admit that the idea of shooting a falling sattelite out of the sky is pretty damn cool from a techie stand point. One thing that just made me laugh out loud in the story though was the reason for doing it. "Military and administration officials said the satellite is carrying fuel called hydrazine that could injure or even kill people who are near it when it hits the ground. That reason alone, they said, persuaded President Bush to order the shoot-down." One of the reasons they use hydrazine as rocket fuel is that it burns really really well.....so, when this sattelite enters the earths atmosphere, breaks into a zillion pieces and heats up to oh 2500 degrees F any hydrazine will be vaporized. My guess is that the real reason for shooting it down is that there are things in that sattelite that we do not want recovered by the "wrong" people. Domino

Of course that---- it is a spy sattelite, and the idea of what it would take to blow them out of the air, as a training exercise........consider the as of late imbriglios in which one could with easily obtainable technology, take our GIS sattelites out, leaving us blind in war, we would need first strike capability. It kills a couple birds with one stone, it would be my opinion (personally) that they have explosives on board the sattelite in any case.......or they could send it towards the sun. A plausible denial and advance spin to alert the world we are gonna throw some ordinance up there, and it ain't aimed at the kremlin, or korea, or well---you get the idea. Ron
