quote:

Under oath and sometimes blistering questioning, Roger Clemens stuck to his story Wednesday. So did his chief accuser and former personal trainer, Brian McNamee. And after a 4 1/2-hour hearing, Congress settled for a draw in the he-said, he-said between the two men over whether the seven-time Cy Young Award winner used performance-enhancing drugs.

Ultimately, the matter may be referred to the Justice Department for a resolution — and, possibly, criminal charges.
"I haven't reached any conclusions at this point," said California Democrat Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

But, as ranking Republican Tom Davis of Virginia, put it: "Both can't be telling the truth."

I found it bizarre that McNamee is also claiming to have injected Clemens wife with HGH.

I also don't believe Clemens, sadly.

I still do not understand why this is a matter for Congress.  Why the hell do we need to be paying for an investigation into shit like this?  I really don't care if these guys use steroids or not.

slvemike4u -> RE: Roger Clemens claims he is innocent (2/13/2008 5:04:48 PM)

The reason Congress is looking at this is Baseball is a'public trust" and as such falls very much under the purview of congress.Whenever the public's interest are involved it is right and proper for congress to bring any violition of that  trust to light.

celticlord2112 -> RE: Roger Clemens claims he is innocent (2/13/2008 5:09:01 PM)

What does it matter?

Roger Clemens got paid lots of money to throw a baseball.  He did it very well, apparently.  If  he used steroids or HGH, he's not all that bright.

What does it matter?

Baseball is a fabulous game, but it is a game.  There are better things Congress can be doing.

This is so not news.

DesFIP -> RE: Roger Clemens claims he is innocent (2/13/2008 5:20:15 PM)

The weird thing here is that when all this started, steroid use wasn't prohibited. So they're asking him to confess to committing something legal. And who knows if the trainer told them the truth or told the ball players he was giving injections of B-12. After all, selling exclusive stories of B-12 shots doesn't get him any money. Which means his testimony is tainted too. Think he doesn't already have a hot book contract?

I understand the entire fraud in sports, anti-trust stuff.  But do you think that maybe, just maybe there are some more important things going on in our country, here and abroad that are just maybe, perhaps, possibly a bit more important than athletes juicing?

Yep. It's sad that so much shit is hitting the fan, but time is being spent in congress on baseball.

servantforuse -> RE: Roger Clemens claims he is innocent (2/13/2008 5:50:33 PM)

He won't be in trouble for taking HGH, he will be in trouble for lying under oath. ( aka Bill Clinton )

Baseball is not a "public trust."  It's a game, and like all games it has it's losers, winners, and cheaters.  A public trust has to do with government, not entertainment.  Baseball has been losing spectators for decades, and it has nothing to do with it's lack of heroes.  It's a boring game to watch, and now it has to compete with other forms of entertainment.  Fuck them and their fans; I really don't care.  It's not my business, and it's not important in the grand scheme of life.

Actually, attendance is up; in 1970, it was a little under 29 million, and in 2005, it was almost 75 million.

WTF??????

If there were more important topics to discuss....you don't think People Magazine would be covering it?

(I swear...I think I'm the only thinking person here).

KatyLied -> RE: Roger Clemens claims he is innocent (2/13/2008 6:51:24 PM)

Sorry, I don't read People Magazine.  My bad.

Arrrchibald -> RE: Roger Clemens claims he is innocent (2/13/2008 7:47:17 PM)

The end result of this investigation is that steroids will get a lot more publicity, and become associated with an effective pitcher.

One of the original concerns with pros taking roids is the idea that amateurs athletes will look up to the pros as role models.

Unfortunately, since Clemens has been so successful in his career, proving that he did take roids would only serve as an advertisement for the the effectiveness of drug.

And the only moral of the story:  Don't get caught.

For what it`s worth,I wish this was a big deal 25 years ago, when my younger brother was juice`n.

It did some damage to him and for some people it can really mess up their bodies.

I understand your point though.I think this is for the UMs and young adults more than anything.

I hope it wakes people up in general and young people in particular.
