i only add people that i've messaged with, usually after reading their posts on the forums. i tend to use it much like i do my favorites list - just as a way to stay connected to people whose insight i enjoy.
i actually don't use it like i do myspace or facebook - on those sites i tend to friend people i only know in real life or have known online for a really long time (as in like 5+ years, and have met some of them in real life) as a way to keep up with how people are doing. usually there i tend to add people i might have gone to school with but haven't seen in a long time, or who moved different places for grad programs, or whatever.
i don't ever add people anywhere just to add people (although all my friends are hot as hell, i must say).
