Why? Why is it assumed there must be or will be hard times? Are you so convinced by the propaganda spouted by both sides that it you have resigned yourself to hard times? Maybe the 'war' is lost if the majority believe this as fact. The problem we have is that we are presented with candidates that can not think outside the box. Why? For instance - want to address the "uninsured"? Create a 'militarized' solution. No - Don't make it a division of the military but populate a health care system in a similar manner you populate the military. Create a program where 100% of the education of physicians, dentists, and other health care workers is paid by the government for a 6 year commitment to serve at government health care facilities. Any currently uninsured person can use the system. Existing health care facilities stay status quo.
The problem is it would require breaking the 'box' created by the AMA.

Make is prohibitive for a company who wants to hire criminal workers to do so by enforcing current laws with more dramatic consequences. The policy is already being employed by a couple of States who have now will revoke the operating license of companies who have habitually hired criminal workers. As a result there is a reverse migration from those States. No work - no criminal workers.
Overpopulated jails? Eliminate non-victim 'moral' crimes of such as drug and/or sex. Sell it, tax it, and replace the prisons with programs, rehab centers, and convalescent homes funded by the taxes and staffed with my 'militarized' health care personal; for those who by personal choice destroy themselves with their decisions.
Problem - The corporate 'box' needing a new generation of low wage workers won't allow the well to run dry.
The moral 'box' of organized religions won't permit personal moral choices.

The fact behind the fact is that we are a nation with a very large portion of its economy based upon war. A god must have a devil; US industries based upon war must have an 'evil empire'. The fall of the USSR created a vacuum filled currently by the 'radical Muslims' of the middle east. Converting those military industries to something more constructive - say for instance alternative fuel sources - would be a platform position of a person worthy of my vote.
Fact it it could never happen, that 'box' is full of corporations and individuals who would kill anyone foolish enough to challenge them. Sad really because another FACT is we don't need to be the world police. With current technology we have sufficient deterrent capability if we only had a leader confidently stating under no uncertain terms that any attack on the US will result in 'Israeli' like retribution.
How about considering the different beliefs regarding entitlements. Fact is - no entitlement program has ever been successful. A statement of fact based upon the fact that no entitlement program has ever been eliminated. Whether it's the 'war on poverty' or the 'no child left behind'; there is still poverty and based upon test scores compared with other industrialized nations - we have more left behind graduating high school students than ever.

Sure we do - we just don't want to face it. They will do what they are told to do by the Corporations and big ticket donors who funded their candidacy. They will do what those who constructed the 'boxes' instruct them to do, serving only those who thrive within the boxes.
Will people be hurt, suffer, and fail? Sure they will. However being allowed to fail is a great path to success. When failure was relatively common, not everyone got a trophy, and a report card had the potential of reporting a 'F'; was it really that bad? Maybe if people considered and feared failure they wouldn't have been so ready to buy homes outside their finacial reality.
As the candidates ask; "Are you better off now than you were then?"
