Alumbrado -> RE: Honest or Money, whats more important. (2/9/2008 11:13:07 PM)

Well, I made a conscious decision to put my triskelion on my arm, in plain sight...

When people have asked me what it means, my reply is 'I like to hit people'.

If I sense they are not lifestyle friendly, I reference all further questions to the martial arts.
If they seem more open minded, I'll talk about BDSM.

In either case, I am telling them the truth.

OneEvilBastard -> RE: Honest or Money, whats more important. (2/9/2008 11:41:57 PM)

Wait, there are realtors out there that don't want to grab you by the balls and twist until you cry?

Honestly, a triskelion and pride flag on a realtor is kind of redundant. It'd be kind of like a computer programmer saying, "You really want to know what that 20 sided dice means? It says I'm a member of a roleplaying club."

PanthersMom -> RE: Honest or Money, whats more important. (2/10/2008 12:05:37 AM)

honesty.  money comes and goes, but being honest can't be taken away from you.  having a reputation for honesty is always a gigantic plus in my book, these days so many people are not because of money.

Being proud of your bdsm path through life is kewl be it a bumper sticker or ink on your person .But After putting that out there then second guessing  what the general publics questions shall be of your displays  and how you intend to respond ? Well you should not only expect the  questions but  know you have to answer honestly with integrity , if not why are you putting those  items out for people to question .    If your worried about your responses, how your viewed , will you loose a sale ,some money  and people asking  what does that mean ?Then why have the displays at all .
repeating  Master Fire's  query " what is it worth to you ?
To me its almost like putting a rainbow sticker on your car , if your gay and proud and want the world to know  ,cool , whatever .But if some person aske's what  do all those rainbow  stickers mean and instead of you saying "gay pride" you say cuz i like rainbows and i think they are pretty .. well you get my gist.
Best wishes on your journey -where ever it may take you.

You don't quite grasp the basic concepts of this do you?  Do you give your credit card and PIN number to anyone who asks? No? Then you must not have any integrity either...[8|]

What I do and why, are mine to decide whom to share with, they aren't yours or anyone else's to demand. Showing the symbol is for those in the know, not for me to be some sort of conscripted cheerleader rubbing my choices in everyone face.

i was confused by this reponse.  i wouldn't have my atm card tatooed on my person for someone to ask me about in the first place.  i'm not sure that was a fair comparison.

my opinion is the OP chose to display symbols and was honest in answering questions.  Integrity is to me, more precious than money.

Alumbrado -> RE: Honest or Money, whats more important. (2/10/2008 6:30:16 AM)

So you have never pulled your card out in a public place where other people might see it?  Or did you mean that if someone came up while you had it out and asked to be told everything about it, you would phrase your answers to tell them what you felt like they had a right to know?

There is no lack of integrity in displaying an insider symbol, and answering truthfuly while still witholding some information until you are comfortable that you are dealing with someone of like mind and good intent.

This is why I never advertize my bedroom habits.

Saves me from having to make choices like this.

pixelchick -> RE: Honest or Money, whats more important. (2/10/2008 7:16:36 AM)

Apologies for sneaking in here... A few comments , Honesty or money, thats a personal question and depends on the circumstance every time. If you found a wallet with money inside, would you pocket the money? If you lost a wallet full of money, would you ever expect to see it again?
secondly- If you have something stuck in public view that is personal to you- thats your choice, granted. But if you aren't prepared to tell the truth when you are asked about it why have it on display  in the first instance. If you are proud of who you are and the life you lead then the question of money does not come into it.
That's just my humble opinion- saying that, offer me $2000 and I could be tempted to change my mind :-)

There is a thing called an expectation of privacy and using my atm card at a checkout counter or a bank machine is not the same as a public "display" but yanno?  some people would just rather be right than happy and i find no satisfaction in having a debate with a brick wall.

Very interesting topic. Especially for those who deal with the public, or have a public profile.
I agree with the posters sentiment that its my personal business, and I pretty much keep it that way. Of course I dont have bumper stickers on my car that raise an eyebrow either. If you do that, you are basically telling the world who you are.

My close friends understand my personal life......but I dont offer info to my clients about it. I keep my professional and personal life seperate.

That said, I am not ashamed of who I am, and have had people approach me who recognized me. I just smile and say, "yes, that's me". I dont offer an apology or explantation.
I figure I am only accountable to myself, my loved ones, or those dependant on me, and my Creator.

So far.....so smooth with that approach.

DesFIP -> RE: Honest or Money, whats more important. (2/10/2008 12:19:56 PM)

There's a difference between honest and inappropriate. If in referring to a bdsm symbol you said that it's to advertise that you're into beating girls up and making them cry, they probably would get a different broker. If instead you said that it covers a broad umbrella of relationship dynamics and your preferred one is a 50's style where you get final say if amicable agreement cannot be reached, you would probably keep them as clients.

Personally I don't see the reason to advertise my sexual likes and dislikes.

Reality check.... you are the one who attacked me with the slur over my giving factually honest answers to questions about my tattoos.

You might want to actually look up the concept of  'expectation of privacy'... it doesn't exist in a public place like a checkout counter, and it isn't something tha you get to demand for yourself and then attack others for enjoying regarding their private life.  Happy hypocrisy.

And exactly where do you get the notion that truthfully answering questions is dishonest, if someone doesn't choose to share every single personal detail?

Apparently basic concepts like boundaries, choice, and consent are not part of some people's experience.

Was my desicion to be honest worth it?

Seems to me you made the decision when you put the bumper stickers on your car, not when answering questions.  Personally, I don't advertise, but I appreciate your honesty with the folks when they asked you.  I think that shows positive things about your character.

If you had lied to them you ran the possibility of them either knowing what the symbols meant already, or finding out and realizing you'd lied to them. You made the right choice.
