Disheartened Fighters Al-Qaeda in Iraq's change in tactics comes in response to the turmoil and self-doubt that arose among its members as they lost the support of Sunni tribesmen, a process vividly described in a letter by an unnamed al-Qaeda in Iraq emir that the U.S. military said it seized last November. ... The emir cited Muhammad, a 6-foot-3 computer major born in a Western European country, who crossed the Syrian border about a year ago with dreams of carrying out a suicide bombing in Iraq. But when he arrived in Anbar, there was no mission for him. "He was discouraged and asked his emir to transfer him to another district," the emir wrote to senior leaders in the 49-page letter, of which four full pages and other excerpts were provided to The Post by U.S. military officials. "His request was denied." The letter said Muhammad was eventually summoned to carry out a small raid on a local "apostate resident," only to be shot in the arm. U.S. troops later found the village in which Muhammad was hiding and surrounded it. "He was killed by a sniper and died," the letter says. The emir said potential suicide bombers were told by coordinators on the border that they could choose a suicide mission, which would kill 20 to 30 U.S.-led troops or their supporters, the letter says. Yet a would-be bomber would then wait in the desert for months. "At the end he will be asked to do a small operation, such as murdering someone or blowing up a police car," the emir wrote. The foreigners would then become discouraged, he said, and return to their home countries. But! ... But! .. But! How could this be??!! [8D] Firm

or it could be completely made up propoganda to discourage foreign fighters from going to Iraq to become suicide bombers. We'll know soon enough.

I thinnk it is probably accurate since the stats indicate that the quantity of incidents has fallen.

It appears to be some bitching from a disgruntled employee. It is clear that the government of Clinton Missouri needs to be executed, since a person went out there screaming kill the mayor, and offed 5 (thats right, count em 5) people. This also indicates to continue with YOUR equivalence principle that the entire current administration should be put to death as dogs of war. One anecdote does not make a string of pearls. I suspect you will see a lull in certain types of violence as long as a troop surge is in effect. Hell, throw up a drunk driver road block, you are gonna take drunks off the road, but it cures no underlying issues, and when the cops are gone, the drunks are there again. It would be laughable to call that 'working'. In the mean time, while we have fucked up the government in Iraq, have left the country in worse shape than we found it, have CAUSED instability in the entire middle east, have CAUSED terrorist groups to gravitate into the area...have dissapated our might and coffers------------- Where are the masterminds (and the wives and children, aunts and uncles, cousins and nephews, sisters and brothers) responsible for the act of terror perpetrated against america, I say as I said at the outset, bring me thier fucking heads on a platter with their mouths wrapped around their genitalia. " Domiguy, are you still stuck on the Dan Rather AWOL story based on unsubstaniated documetns from anonamous sources? Or is that different for some reason. At least this story didn't lie and say that it had been authenticated.....

When Al-Qaeda lost the support of the Sunnis they should have packed up and left then. There is no point in being there when in order to get supplies you have to steal and kill from the people you thought were going to be behind you because they won't work with you any more.

greetings, er, this doesn't surprise me at all, considering that al-qaeda is the strictest definition of fundamentalist, probably seconded only by the taliban and the saudis (which is not a surprise since they all follow the same sunni tradition), not endorsed by any mainstream sunni tradition and they HATE shi'a and sufis so they're not about to get any support there, either. i'm shocked that they get very many foreign recruits at all, to be honest. the truth is, the group is based on a specific ideology, and the only way to keep support is to betray that ideology, which would completely nullify their purpose as a group - so they're kind of between a rock and a hard place. they were started specifically to counter social practices and countries/religions that do social practices that weren't "traditional" enough for them - so saying, "don't interfere with social issues" is like saying, "commit ideological suicide." respectfully, annabelle.
