LadyHathor -> The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 7:46:51 AM)

I've been thinking of this post for a few days now, I was going to post this in Mistress, then I said, well heck, I can take a beating so let's put this right out there for the masses:

I am and have been for several years a Domina and a Wiccan--recently I have taken on something that has been a dream of Mine and something I am very committed to--( if you want to know the personal reasons, email Me on the dark side)---being an official Minister--non denominational, offering comfort and counselling in the earth bound beliefs. ( Now before everyone goes all to nutso land---yes I have applied to the ULC, yes that may be a joke to some--but it is serious to Me as well as the classes I am taking  real time at the university and online to educate Me and support what I want to offer and that is not the focus of this thread).

My issue is, can I be what I am and still be a believeable minister of guidance, healing, comfort--participate in weddings, funerals, etc with credibility?

Can the two live spiritually side by side?

RedMagic1 -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 7:51:58 AM)

Um..... yes?  It's a new idea of course.  Things like mortification of the flesh, self-imposed privation, service to others before oneself, have never been connected with spirituality in the past, in any region of the world.

szobras -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 7:52:15 AM)

Can the two live spiritually side(who you are) by side(actions taken on devotions and desires to be a positive influence on others)?
Why not?

ProlificNeeds -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 8:08:29 AM)

Doing good is doing good, no matter what name or banner you do it under.

"can I be what I am and still be a believeable minister of guidance"
Do you think you are believable? Do you need to convince others, or yourself? I think a calling to be a minister is something you should feel, not something you need to be convinced of. A spiritual mentor needs to helps others come to terms with their own spirituality, not imprint themselves on others. All you need is your empathy, compassion and understanding to help others.
I'm not christian but I've helped christians come to terms with their faith, and their need for religion in life.
Sometimes spirituality isn't about logic, and splitting hairs, it's about gut, about the spirit of sentiment, and not the letter of doctrine. Some people may never be able to understand how you make the two co-exist, but as long as you can find spiritual contentment in your choices, then remain true to what is right for you.

I don't know if that helps at all, but I wish you all the best.

I wish you all the best in your endeavors. yes I believe the two can live spiritually side by side. You clearly stated you are Wiccan, thus could this be another avenue that the Goddess is revealing what your life's path is from this point forward?

Well, since you say you are Wiccan, then you would be one who understands how all things are connected and the power of energy manipulation.  You know, the butterfly effect and all that.  I don't see how how anything can live "separately" side by side, within you. (Unless you are a sociopath).  Especially these two things.
If my Dominating someone helps to guide them into being a better person, confronting their unhealthy issues, increases their self-awareness, enhances their spiritual beliefs, helps them become more familiar with their own belief systems (conscious or not), AND I let my energy dance with their energy in a postive way.  Then is this not all part of the spiritual principles you are ministering?  Perhaps it is just those "social conditiongs" that are bugging you.  And, heck, if being a Wiccan didn't deal with that issue already, you have work to do.
It is NOT what you do, but the INTENT with which you do it.
In a nutshell:  There is no way they live separately side by side, within you.  They are both part of who you are.  So unless you are willing to amputate one, they are enmeshed and things from one will overlap into the other. But considering what I said above, is that so bad?  Just my viewpoint.  Not sure if it made sense but somhow I think you will understand what I mean.

sirguym -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 8:46:50 AM)

Of course, and you would not be the first, by my understanding. Another friend has trained as a Humanist Minister with the UK Humanist Association who accredit people to officiate at secular wedings, funerals, ctc. and found their insight and practical experience very helpful.

If nothing else, remember the mystics and statistics of nearly all religious sects who practice flagellation.

Beat a bitch to death for christ, I always say.

Rev. Ron of the church of jesus fucking christ, what's happening now?

LadyHathor -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 9:01:35 AM)

I am on the floor!! You are such a hoot--

ExSteelAgain -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 11:07:28 AM)

It seems like we had at least one minister in the news who was also a Dom online with a few real time slaves. So if he can do it, why not you? Assuming you would make a good minister. I have no doubts you are a great Domme.

I'd love to assent wholeheartedly, but this is really going to depend on your congregation / target "audience", and how you carry yourself. If your lifestyle is a secret and if word gets out, you're (probably) screwed to a certain degree. If you are upfront about your lifestyle, then your congregation will be loyal but you might have a smaller congregation. Also, can you live with it and be confident about both facets of your life? Have you looked up the scripture that could be of assistance, and also the scripture that could do you harm with regard to the duality of your choices? (Look up the "harmful" stuff so that you can have your answers prepared in the event someone else brings it up.)

Having lived through something similar to this, I can assure you that it's not easy (especially if you are living in a small town). The strength of your convictions, the rightness of your decisions in your own heart are key. If you can live with it, and if you believe in your causes and in yourself, I see no reason you shouldn't find peace in your roles. If you waiver however, even slightly, especially in the presence of your flock, your life will be more difficult.

I wish you well in your pursuit.

LadyHathor -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 12:16:31 PM)

Thank you all for your response--actually I am not "public" as a Domina--as I don't go to local functions ( don't like the local groups here in My part of the state)-- and it isn't My intent to have a congregation--but to be available to those that need Me--and its interesting what MistressVenus said--for Me being a Domina is inside Me and is intermingled with who I am "out there"---this is a drive I have from all that makes Me, Me--and that I have never waivered from---so many many awesome points---

liljoy -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 12:36:55 PM)

i'm curious how the wiccan and minister parts come together. i admit i know almost nothing about wicca but the two don't seem to go together. How does that work?

sarahfukmeat -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 12:46:49 PM)

LadyLynx -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 1:00:49 PM)

A couple of websites you should check out: www.uua.org. (the Unitarian Universalist Association has been very supportive of pagans, the GLBT community, etc.) there is also an yahoo group called OUUCH, it is a UU-lifestyler/kink group. The lady who owns/manages the group also has a regular "Leather page" that she posts to the group.  Check out the name Raven Kaldera, whose website is www.cauldronfarm.com  He has written several articles, and a few books on Alturnative practices. (including a book on Pagan BDSM.)

LadyLynx -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 1:03:49 PM)

similiar to a Christian minister do their job, and be a lifestyler. or any other person, with or without a spiritual vocation. ;)

bipolarber -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 4:30:50 PM)

Speaking as a long time male submissive: The best guides (both spiritual and emotional) have been my Dommes.

I once had a long talk with a Lutheran minister (the father of a girl I was dating) about what qualities it took to be an effective pastor. He was very much of the opinion that you had to have a strong sense of yourself, and the strength not to let everyone else's problems drag you down... Years later, thinking about this conversation again after getting into BDSM, I began to think that, in many ways, dominants (good dominants, anyway) often perform many of the same services within the scene as spiritual leaders do in the church. Only the guidance, the coffessions, the forgiveness, is all administered to a much smaller congregation... :)

sublibrarian -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/6/2008 6:33:56 PM)

I don't see it contradictory for someone to be kind, consoling, giving of guidance and support, while also getting off on consensual power exchange or even inflicting pain in their private life. It's not any more contradictory than my being a strong, independent feminist who likes to submit. These things can live side by side. They don't cancel each other out.

MidMichCowboy -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/7/2008 12:12:06 AM)

LadyHathor
As long as you are honest and represent your beliefs in a straight forward manner, I don't see anything wrong with this. When there is so much hypocrisy in a profession, the whole profession suffers. Look at all the ministers and priests who abuse children or engage in the activities they preach against. Someone who honestly presents themselves and their beliefs would be a blessing.

julietsierra -> RE: The Reverend and WIITWD (2/7/2008 1:13:36 AM)

I personally know of two people who are licensed ministers who are also dominants - and very public within this lifestyle. They don't seem to have any problems with reconciling within themselves their roles as minister and dominant. I can see the both of them in both of those roles. In fact, if I were to ever marry again (a general pause while I laugh), I would choose either one of these two men to officiate above anyone else.

Actually,  I kind of wish there were more people out there doing what you're doing. I believe there is a very strong need for ministers of all faiths who can be understanding of what we do and help provide the spiritual support that so often, so many of us need.
