Philadelphia Daily News

SINCE NOVEMBER, Edward Stanley Harris has been paying Philadelphia Traffic Court $100 per month on a bill of $1,811.50 for tickets issued 17 years ago - which the court has admitted aren't even his.  He's paying them off because, he says, a Traffic Court judge said he'd arrest him if he didn't.

Harris, a producer at CN8 Sports, has never been inside a prison cell, and he'd like to keep it that way. So he's writing those monthly checks to Traffic Court.

But he says it's not fair.

Gee, ya think?

Too long to read, but I think I'd file a judicial complaint against the judge.  I'm not a lawyer, but I'm pretty darn sure the judge cannot come up with a law that says you are responsible for the traffic tickets of your brother.

The trouble with fighting the law, is that the law has way more resouces, and recourse, than the average person. Unfortunately, being right doesn't always protect you.

I work in a court, and there is no way in hell we'd pull some shit like what this goober did. Mistakes happen, but this isn't one of them, it's a blatant disregard for the law.

It's totally wrong. And ridiculous. And I must be cynical - have seen way too much legal situations where "right" didn't seem to matter as much as it should.

I thought it was rather nice of one of the bloggers on that link to be so kind as to give out the judges phone number...it is the last entry on the blog for those who would like to give voice to their opinion.

I wonder if they are identical. Then maybe he could go to court posed as his brother and get them to charge him as his brother instead!!!

I'm sure the Judge appreciates that. [:D]

As Thompson pointed out, they're not identical, k. What an infuriating situation.

Missed that part [:(]... I did read it all, really. Well, almost all.[:)]

I would think the publicity will help his case.

Nah...

"Last Thursday, during Edward's appeal hearing at the Criminal Justice Center, the payment order against him was withdrawn. The sympathetic clerk there suggested that Edward go to Traffic Court to get his money back, as it's the only entity that can straighten things out."

If one thing is true about the appeals system, other judges love to tell lower judges when they act like overwhelmingly complete morons.

Good to know:) Thanks for the update, Laurel.

Yet there are still people who want to put their health in the hands of the public sector [:D]

Oh right, and a privately run judicial system would assure us of universal fairness and do so with greater efficiency despite the 30% premium it would demand off the top to pay its shareholders...

I have a bridge you might be interested in. No worries... private sale...

Actually, while the judge was derelict in his duties, my reference was to the motor vehicles office bureaucrats that created the mess in the first place, then let it linger for fifteen years. Even the telecom and cable companies are more responsive than that!

i don't know that anyone other than the anarchists will argue that the state shouldn't provide a (theoretically!) impartial judiciary to mediate disputes and render judgement against lawbreakers.
