My first question would be regarding Firefox or any other browser than IE, is how does it intergate with other MS programs

Hmmmm . . . well my first question about your first question is how can a browser integrate with any other program? All a browser does is display a stream of information coming through your serial port or on occasion displaying a graphics or text (html) file on your disk drive. So why should which browser you use make a difference?

But this is easy enough to test -- download Firefox, set it as your default browser and try it; if it doesn't "integrate" somehow with other programs then you can always delete it and you'll default back to IE.

I know you meant to say uninstall here **sticks tongue out and runs**

Amaros -> RE: Dump IE. Go Firefox (9/14/2005 8:59:53 AM)

I'm sold on Firefox, while it does appear to use more memory, it put that memory to good use - I regularly launch over 50 instantiations and have yet to crash becuase of it - IE limit is about 30 on my box. With that many instantiations of Firefox, I'm using over 60% of my memory, but with no problems. IE crashes the system at around 50% of resources, and the file navigation system crashes way before that, and god forbid I should be on a high bandwidth site at the same time, I'm lucky if my box doesn't lock up with Ten or Twenty browsers open.

With IE, I'm used to routinely having to hot reboot out of the BSOD just to shut down - not a single crash with Firefox in the month I've been using it. There are a few niggling glitches, the highlighting thing, and if I close a tabbed browser, all the browsers close (IE closes all browsers if I do an [Ctrl-Alt-Del][End Task], problematic when a site locks up trying to install malware - which hasn't happened yet with Firefox) , but with my intensive brower use, Firefox beats IE hands down.

nicochan -> RE: Dump IE. Go Firefox (9/14/2005 10:28:06 PM)

In complete agreement with Amaros.

Love FireFox. Never had any problems. Any and all chat programs that I've tried work fine except MSN. MSN games don't want to work either, but sheesh.

When I used IE, it would get mad if I used Photoshop. It would get mad when I tried to have more than 5 windows open (alas, no tabbed browing as of yet), and spyware, crashes, and blue screen of death up the wazoo. Just for fun, I ran IE for less than 3 minutes on this almost-new computer -- guess what? Error message + crash + "Dammit, I hate Microsoft."

SirKenin -> RE: Dump IE. Go Firefox (9/15/2005 11:44:13 AM)

Firefox takes up more memory because it is poorly written code... Bloatware. It always has been since the days I was testing it in beta. If you open one window in Firefox and one window in IE, you will see the dramatic difference.

I have been using IE since the early days, and after IE 6 I have not had one blue screen and I keep many windows open all the time.

Also, Firefox has problems with Flash animations and animated GIFs on certain configurations. I can present to you a whole thread about it.

Incidentally, I am using IE 7 beta 1 with tabbed browsing and it blows the hell out of Firefox, hands down. I have Opera as well, and although Opera beats the shit out of Firefox, it still does not hold a candle to the new IE.

Pavel -> RE: Dump IE. Go Firefox (9/15/2005 3:40:55 PM)

I'm just really under impressed by MSN/MS products. I haven't cared to look at opera, maybe it'd work a bit better than firefox. I don't terribly care as firefox doesn't do everything that IE did to piss me off.

I think that's the crucial test for me, does it work for my purposes, and do it without yelling and screaming. I think firefox beats IE handily in that capacity.

I do recommend taking a look at Opera. It is a nice tight browser. Not long ago they were giving away free keys to the registered version, so naturally I had to score Myself a few. [;)]

pahunkboy -> RE: Dump IE. Go Firefox (11/11/2009 12:07:18 PM)

firefox 3.6 beta 2 is out.

Dont get it.

I loaded it to try it- and I want the old one back.   The beta is test  my addons like ad block and the vid where I must ask it to play is not in this new version yet.

I do tho LOVE the old version.  So if you test the beta it will not have the features you currently expect. (yet)

stef -> RE: Dump IE. Go Firefox (11/11/2009 1:20:48 PM)

Duh.  Did you really necromance a 5 year dead thread for this?

[sm=marionette.gif]

Add-on's aren't "in" any version, hence their name.  They're written by third parties and they generally don't release updates for add-ons until the core app is out of beta.  If you LOVE the current release why did you even install the beta anyway?

I looked for an existing thread so as to not overpost and hear from a mod.

I tried it because it sounded good.  It is not that add ons are not on it- but they can not be added as of now.

Missokyst -> RE: Dump IE. Go Firefox (11/11/2009 1:42:36 PM)

I use both. And as a tech I have seen just as many spyware viral issues from people who only use firefox than those who use IE.
It isn't so much the software as the user.
I primarily use IE and never have issues.

DomImus -> RE: Dump IE. Go Firefox (11/11/2009 4:10:02 PM)

I have never liked MSIE from day one in any version. Slow slow slow. Couple that with CM being hosted on a 386 over dialup and you have plenty of free time on your hands.

Lately I have taken to calling Mozilla Firefox "MSIE Jr.". It seems with every subsequent update -  which happen with amazing regularity these days - it gets slower and slower. Firefox was good when I first started using it. I'm much less impressed with it these days. I was using Opera before Firefox and Navigator before Opera. I can't remember at this point why I dumped Opera. I may go back.

Does anyone use Google Chrome? How do you like it?

sappatoti -> RE: Dump IE. Go Firefox (11/11/2009 5:07:46 PM)

I use Google Chrome as the default browser on my Windows XP Pro emulated PC (using Virtual PC for Mac 6 on an iBook G4). While Windows XP Pro running on that emulated platform is slow to begin with, using Google Chrome does not make web browsing any slower. It also hasn't crashed out Windows completely (so their threaded processing for applets appears to actually work). Trying to use either the latest MSIE, Firefox, or Safari on that emulation makes web browsing absolutely slower than anything I can stand and, when those browsers crash they usually also force my emulation into the dreaded Blue Screen of Death.

I'm guessing that Google Chrome is, at this point, spared all of the feature bloat that is common with the other browsers. If it runs acceptably on my emulated platform, I can only imagine that it must run faster than the others on native hardware.

Now, from a privacy standpoint, I hope that Google doesn't try to datamine anything that you dig up from the web using their browser, like the apparently do in order to serve up relevant ads while using many of their web-based services (like Gmail).

From the above article:
quote:

While the Cenzic report shows Firefox at the top of the browser vulnerability pile, Ewe was quick to note that Cenzic uses Mozilla technology within its own solutions.

"Full disclosure here, Mozilla plays an important role in Cenzic's solution," Ewe said. "We are actually sitting on top of Mozilla as our agent of preference for scanning sites."

I am sorry.  I pulled a thread that- I thought was related- and it is outdated.   I will be more careful.
