Status: offline 		i'm aware of the fact that there are book threads, so if you want to tell me that more power to you but you're not telling me anything i don't know already.

anyway, i'm working through rice's beauty trilogy (i'm using the first one for a semiology/content analysis for a paper) and i'm wondering what people's real opinions on the series are. i know a lot of people love it. i'm wondering what other opinions are there. i just don't want to spend the money on the other two if they're really not worth it,

yeah i didn't like the first one. i only read it for this paper because it was relatively mainstream (has implications for the paper i'm writing). but like i said a lot of people love them so i wasn't sure if it was worth my time bothering to read the other two.

Status: offline 		Spend the money.  It is a magnificant, three pieces of literature.  Some of it may seem a little redundant by the third volume, but, hey, it's ALL good.   And the ending has a great romantic quality to it.  Gives BDSM a real, heartfelt, positive outcome as far as romance is concerned.  At least it was to me.

Status: offline 		I think the idea for the first book was original and sadly unfulfilled.  the other two books pretty much deteriorate into nothing but male homosexual sex, which is fine if that's your thing.  but if you took out all the sex from books two and three, you'd have about 3 pages of some repetitive conversation.

Status: offline 		i thought that too, to the point where it's almost annoying. i'm finding stuff to write about but my poor paper is deteriotating to where it's saying the book is neutral at best lol.

yeah i'm getting that impression. it's just so strange. it seems to be one of those series where you either love it or you hate. there doesn't seem to be a lot of people who say oh it was okay.

Ugh, you've got to be kidding.  I could only get part-way into the first book before I found myself wanting to wretch.  Ann Rice's "literature" isn't fit to line bird cages.

Status: offline 		I liked the books. Yes, they are repetative: a lot of erotica is! I think what turns most people off to them is they are written from a ver bisexual point of view. People who are a little closer to one end of the Kinsey scale or the other tend to get the willies about that sort of thing. But, for those of us who are a bit more "flexible" in our desires, the books are wonderful, romantic whacking material! I personally love books two and three, because of the pony play elements. The first book really only had one or two scenes that grabbed my imagination. Otherwise, it was forgettable. If you're looking for something poetic, like "O," you're going to be disappointed. But if you want something a bit more engaging than a copy of this month's "Penthouse Variations," then you'll be pretty pleased.

It's BDSM sex fantasy. Pure (or maybe I should say impure) and simple.

Status: offline 		Hmmm, I'm not bi and I liked #1 and only grew bored with 2 and 3 because there was so much male/male sex that I just couldn't get into. Overall not the greatest series of novels and not truly even good porn. However probably the best BDSM lit since "O".

I can see your great literary taste by the book depicted in your avatar!!  Did you not like "Interview with a Vampire" either?
Is it realy Rice you don't like?  Or, just the Beauty series?  To each their own.  And to her...mucho pesos.

Status: offline 		I have read alot of BDSM literature and novels. I loved the Trilogy and I love Anne Rice. If you do not like her florid and gothic style of writing, you will not like the books. And yes, repetition is part and parcel of all pornography.

I thought it was wildly fantastical, romantic and hot. The pony play sections were totally hot and I surprised myself by getting turned on to the male sub action. Normally I only liked fem sub action, but the Princes were so hot!!

If you are trying to compare it to major literary works, you are not in the ball park. But fun, oh yeah...

Status: offline 		i bought all three of the trilogy at one time..as a boxed set...many years ago...(6 to 8 years ago)..and at the time..i loved them..that is till i got to the end..which i remember hating...

After reading they were all boxed away... been thinking lately i might go hunt em down and re~read... to see if i still enjoy em enough to keep.

Personally.. i have loved Anne Rice as an author..and have nearly all of her books she wrote (under both names)..before she went all religious and said she wont be writing books like the Vampires and Witches books she wrote before..

Just on prinicipal...that shes a fav author..i will get around someday to reading the new religious ones as well..when i dont have another book id prefer to buy instead.

OP....i would reccomend that you try finding copies of the last two books..to borrow..that way, you can read them..but wont have had to invest the money, for something you may not enjoy. Personally...while i remember LOVING them 8 or so years ago..i suspect that if and when i re read them..i will only merely like them now.

That's difficult to say.  Those are the only Ann Rice books that I have read, so I'm loath to categorize all of her work as wretched pap.

i'm not sure what a semiology is, but i don't think you'll get much out of the second and third book that you won't get out of the first. On the other hand, they're damned cheap compared to a semester worth of tuition, so you may as well grab them for those nights when the cable goes out.

i also thought they were spank-worthy (unlike Dickens, Shakespeare, et al... talk about a waste of money!), but she did have some age elements that seemed entirely gratuitous and left me a bit unsettled.
