RCdc -> Ryan 'schoolgirl' advert banned - gives me an idea.... (1/30/2008 10:07:12 AM)

This is Darcy

Budget airline Ryanair were forced to withdraw an advert that featured a model in schoolgirl's clothes with the headline "Hottest Back To School Fares" after they received fifteen complaints from readers of three daily newspapers, the Herald, the Daily Mail and the Scottish Daily Mail.

Here's the link to the BBC News story......
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7216926.stm

This got the Devil's Advocate in me thinking - if just fifteen complaints can get a relatively harmless advertisment effectively banned, and is, in the words of the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) "likely to cause serious or widespread offence", then I wonder how many complaints it would take to get The Sun's Page 3 banned?

For those of you outside of the UK, The Sun is a tabloid rag largely written by morons for morons (i.e. lots of pictures and words of generally two syllables or less), but which features every day, on Page 3, a picture of a topless young woman.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for boobies, but given that young children are exposed (no pun intended) to this (as I'm sure the Daily Mail would have it) 'filth' every day (except Sunday - wouldn't want to rile the Church, would we? [;)]), I just wonder what would happen if enough people (say, the members of a community based forum) wrote to the ASA, or the Press Standards Agency, and complained.

How many would have to be offended before they forced The Sun to drop it's topless nubile beauties?

Hmmm, just a thought.........

NB. As a side question here, particularly for those of you outside of the UK, what are your thoughts on Page 3? Do you think it's acceptable to have topless young ladies in a family newspaper (as The Sun insists it is)? Is it pornographic? Offensive? Or just harmless fun? Over to you..........

Do the boobies have a purpose? Or are they gratuitious boobies?

Hi Darcy, being a fellow brit, I'm familiar (thankfully not TOO familiar) with the Sun. While they may describe themselves as a 'family' newspaper, it makes you wonder what their criteria is for a family. If they were advocating naturism I'd support them, but find their objectification of women unsavoury and tacky. Take ten men, three of which are Sun readers and put the ten infront of a woman and you can spot the Sun readers - their eyes are scanning her chest and wondering what her breasts are like underneath all that clothing! I think the drool is also a dead giveaway!

Wasn't a similar campaign launched some years ago after criticism aimed at them?

Some years ago, during the height of summer, I stopped in at a McD's to grab a drink. I had to breastfeed my um and proceeded to do so. Sitting directly opposite me was a girl in her late teens in a very skimpy thong bikini (which was white so left NOTHING to the imagination). Complaints were made about me, I was asked to continue breastfeeding in the restroom which, back in those days, was simply a basic toilet area. I refused, was asked to leave. I refused and notified the Manager that if he proceeded to attempt to manhandle me I would consider that common assault and protect myself very adequately. I found it odd that one of the most natural things for a mother to do was seen as disgusting and yet the young totty who, in my opinion, was inappropriately dressed in an eaterie, was welcomed. Odd values.

Crikey that makes me think; since I'm never likely to breastfeed, my boobies are gratuitous! Enormously gratuitous.

Just let me know if you're ever lactating and need depressurization assistance.   I will selflessly sacrafice my body for your benefit.  Just like a soldier throwing himself on the grenade, I will throw myself upon your boobies before they explode.

Haha silly lady. I meant in the Sun... do the boobies have a purpose? I've never seen it so I don't know! Personally it would irritate me given the advertising article. Hmmm it would probably just irritate me on principle lol.Hurrah for boobies.Ban the boobies.Hurrah for boobies!

What a generous offer!

Mind you, you might not be getting all you anticipated m'dear. Depressurising them might result in severe personal injury from an implant flying at high speed!

Those things come sharp, I'll bet.

I know! Couldnt resist!

We need PS53 in here - he reads The Sun so I understand, and defended its (in my opinion) rather poor standards as a newspaper, in a recent thread.

I think we need to understand that The Sun (and its imitators) arent really newspapers - theyre comics for adult males. A waste of paper, but popular.

The headlines on the front are always sensationalist. When one opens the front page one is confronted by virtually the whole of page 3 being a picture of some very pretty young lady with big boobs. Page 2 has news on it. The rest is more sensationalist stories designed to appeal to the male audience, plus a pretty ample sports section at the back (which is what PS53 buys it for, apparently).

A risk I am willing to take for the betterment of woman kind.   (I'm selfless that way.)

Oh dear, if there is a hell, I am so going to it for the amount of amusement that gave me... well, that and other reasons.

What I found so amusing was this quote:

quote:

C.J. Doyle of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts told the Herald the ad “portrays a callous contempt for the sensibility of Catholics."

Many Americans view Britons as being very staid and prim. Why we continue to do so even after importing television shows like "Are You Being Served?" baffles me.

I occasionally chat with a friend in london. One day he told me he was watching the "Boob Channel." Lots of naked boobies. (This friend is a self-proclaimed boob lover.)

I have a better question, why are you reading tabloids? If its interesting enough for you to pickup (Redneck Molested buy Female Bigfoot Motorcyclist Page 12) then it should be interesting enough to draw your atention away form the porn. If not Don't pick it up.

In conclusion as you have already stated "by morons for morons"

This is Darcy

I don't touch them with a barge pole! However, my parents used to get The Sun for some unknown reason, and it's a well known institution here in the UK.

I prefer a newspaper that uses words of more than two syllables [:D]
