The Times Online, Jan 16 2008

"Microsoft submitted a patent application in the US for a “unique monitoring system” that could link workers to their computers. Wireless sensors could read “heart rate, galvanic skin response, EMG, brain signals, respiration rate, body temperature, movement facial movements, facial expressions and blood pressure”, the application states."

Why would your employer want to do this you ask?
Because big brother wants to take care of you.

"The system could also “automatically detect frustration or stress in the user” and “offer and provide assistance accordingly”. Physical changes to an employee would be matched to an individual psychological profile based on a worker’s weight, age and health. If the system picked up an increase in heart rate or facial expressions suggestive of stress or frustration, it would tell management that he needed help."

See, it's for your own good.

Of course there are people that want to do it.  And Microsoft is convinced that there are enough to justify the R&D and patent expenses and they can get away with it legally.

Once they have you hooked up to this full time polygraph; what questions do you think are "going to come up in the course of conversation" ?  Nothing official you understand.  And of course no records will be kept.  Except for your benefit.

As presented, this is not a BDSM topic, so with permission of the OP, I'll make it one...

How about hooking it up to your subbie during play, and you can baseline his/her readings during play and then have the machine automatically call safewords when the levels vary too greatly.  Or if you were flogging your subbie and they said it hurt too much, you could tell if they were lying!

Yeah...it's called an EKG and stress test.

('cept they had the crazy idea that you might want to know this shit in real time....before you had a heart attack...and they probably had some diabolical plan to send the information directly to your doctor!!!!!....OMFG!!!!!!).

Right on !!!! Let's all hate on Microsoft because in 1984 they saw the value of having a machine and software program that might make you live longer.

(Fucking bastards).

Sneaky little fuckers, aren't they?

No, they published the patent application 18 months ago.

The reference to 1984 was in how this observation would parallel the kind of no privacy, delve into every aspect of your life involvement of state and job found in the book 1984 by George Orwell.

Hmmm...I'm feeling stressed and anxious 'cause I haven't had sex in weeks. Think the company can help me out?

As as such, in the US, covered under strict HIPAA regulations..

Anyone who would trust PHI to Microsoft is dangerously naive.

Ahhhh (that'll teach me to read the link eh?)....well...all the more diabolical then...they sent out for a patent at a time when they KNEW it could work!!!!  It's like a monopoly or something!

(And to think they would make money on something as horrifying as helping me live to age 89 as opposed to 73).

I bet those pricks are in cahoots with the very people that came up with the pacemaker.

(Next thing you know....their gonna try and do something truly insidious....like come up with a device that allows me to digitally record my TV programs so I don't have to pay for a VCR....bastards).

Well lets see.   OSHA requires that the company protect your safety and health.   So I guess monitoring your vital signs can be considered health.   Then ADA requires accomidation to allow for these health issues, so I guess he can make sure he keeps you safe under ADA, Then, let see.   The EPA requires that you be protected from your environment, so I guess, if the employer is monitoring your vitals, that is an indicator of when your environment is causing you stress.  Then the employer has a responsibility to make you whole if you get hurt under worker comp so he can now moniitor your wellness with the doctor to make sure you get well and healthy and not abuse the system.   I am sure the employer can find more constructive politically correct things to help you live long and prosper.

If the employer isn't protecting that information in accordance with HIPAA, then everything else is a pointless intrusion of your privacy.

I can't imagine the PEF and other Unions permitting this, either.

This makes me think of a Sci Fi movie Gattica.

And until Big Corporations makes  prilimenary changes to benefit body/mind and spirit of  their employees, i will never be convinced this is in the best interest of the employee and their health.

Given that they seem hellbent on screening out any potential employee whose lifestyle is not in line with health directives - no smokers, no drinkers, no recreational drug users, no overweight people.......... and engaged in all sort of pre-employment health screening to make sure youre eating your five portions of fruit and veg like you were told, and taking your prescribed daily exercise etc - assumedly all employees in the future will be superfit Uebermenschen anyway. Which sort of makes this sort of monitoring unnecessary, surely?

There are some ideas best left undeveloped. I’m good with monitoring my own vitals.

Well, now that you mention it....A few years ago I was the Chief Technology Officer with a firm  in Silicon Valley specializing in software for the first wireless cardiac implant devices. Later, I was recruited by, you guessed it, the big M. I didn't work in this particular area, but I was exposed to many of the R&D efforts going on at the time, including the use of home and business devices to capture and transmit data that could be used to enhance comfort and productivity. In addition to the research mentioned in this article, there was ongoing research into home devices and sensors that would automatically adjust the thermostat in a room based on detection of biological signals, and set top medical devices that would capture, monitor and transmit any number of predetermined biological parameters directly to a physician. The point I'm trying to make, is that one must understand the culture of a company that comes up with this kind of stuff before one questions their motives. Microsoft employs many, many brilliant people working 12 hours a day or more with tons of money to spend and few restrictions as to the limits of their creativity. The people thinking up this stuff are way ahead of the business folk whose job it is to find practical applications for all this cool technology. Although it is wise to question government and big corporations when it comes to capturing and storing large quantities of personal data, I can assure you that there is nothing sinister about this technology or the company that created it. Just my opinion, of course.

Ah, but crap is so subjective, isn't it? One person's crap is another person's fetish. It's all good.

Besides, you can always go Mac.
