In light of Kartina, would you easily evacuate your home..? you can grab a totebag only to go- whats in it? does your smoke alarms work? + do you have a carbon monoxide detector? tell me about the velcro in your home

Velcro, what's that got to do with anyones home? Yes, we would evacuate. Not easy but we would. We were right smack in the middle of the fires in California a couple of year's ago. Being an old firefighter like I am. I stayed. My house was there after the smoke cleared. Something like Katrina yeah I'd get out. That in my mind would be something I couldn't control. Having experience even though fire you cannot control...I still had an edge. Yes, I could grab a totebag and run. I keep all photo's on cd's. In a bag. All important papers in a fire safe. As low as it can get. In a full blown house fire temps can get up to 1000 degree's a foot off the ground..so the lower the better. Basically the biggest challenge for us would be grabbing the living creatures out of the house. Yes, our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors work.

I honestly dont know if I would evacuate. It IS MY home. We had a few -well triggar happy evacs. Both chemical spills. The EMS over-re-acted. What I dont like -is one can leave- but not return until they have "permission". my smokes alarms work. My carbon monoxide detector isnt pugged in. bad me. being that i lost weight- and hints of 6 pack abs are showing my jeans - well- i put velcro so they fit. lol- i guess im a hill billy.

Important papers, a week's supply of meds (prescription already on file with the pharmacy - on computer available nation-wide), a week's supply of clothing (not terribly fashionable, but in a shelter who care, a backup of what's on my hard drive (plus my laptop ready to hand), some water, my blood sugar monitor, and - oh, yes - batteries and recharger cords. My smoke alarms work fine - something we're reminded of each time we turn on the oven. And we have a CO monitor as well - something a previous tenant left behind. We live in an area prone to earthquake. Since I'm not exactly athletic, we don't have the ability to make a bunch of trips out to the car. We have to be efficient.

my papers are in a firebox- ild grab that- my black bag of meds- wallet and keys. i doubt any photoes. probaly extra socks...a shaver- extra underwear- the most i need to know -is if my house is on fire. then ild grab the parrot. my cell phone. my money and meds. yikes- ild die in the fire lol

Read “The Zombie Survival Guide” and watch any apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic movie if you really want to know what you should have in your bag. My bag contains socks and undies—a change of clothing, water, batteries, and some sort of granola bar or trail mix, a flashlight, matches, a cutting tool and a photo ID. Each person in my “party” would also carry those items in their bags. A weapon would be carried, also. The situation would dictate what kind of weapons to use. (No, this is not a complete list) Yes, the smoke alarm works. No, we do not have a carbon monoxide detector—we have an all-electric apartment. No Velcro, no gas masks, no cyanide pills and no fear of a terrorist take over. As for Katrina, what a shame and waste of human life. There was enough time for those people to be safely evacuated to other locations and I am not talking about the cesspool that is the friggin’ stadium. I would evacuate in a heartbeat, if I had the means and enough notice to leave.

You'd grab a fire safe. One that would make it through a fire or hurricane. It would be sitting there in the rubble of your house after it was over. Hurricane...well it could blow away. Anyway you're carrying a fire safe. A bag of meds. Wallet, keys, money, socks, shaver, underwear, parrot and cell phone. How many trips is that going to be? Can you carry all in one trip?

Hi Sub4, in my case the big threat is the flood wall breaking. If it does tho- the whole valley is gone. Now lets see- 3 wheel barrels for my cash and debentures, and securities- lol, the parrot would slow me down- held bite me- ild have to take him to the attic and or open the cage. from volunteering at the homelss shelter- it is a HUGE effort to replace one ID papers. So- a 3 way tie that cash and meds- tho cash is king- yet- in a huge disaster- cash is menaingless- I assume ild make it to an uneffected area. even tho people are nice during these times- nothing in life is free... i know right where my cash and meds and papers are. in 2 mintues i could have them. the socks could take longer since they may be n the laundry. collcetablkes are nice- but ild leave them behind. Hye Beat, It puzzles me they didnt tear down the super dome. instead they celebrated it. thats odd.

Well, I constantly back up my files, so my computer contents can be loaded onto a flash drive; my hard copy files will fit into the toebag; my library would probably be lost but it, and almost everything else in my house can be replaced. Fortuantely, I don't live within the path of a hurricane. There are those pesky earthquakes, though....

we have carbon monoxide detectors,in the spring my Lord is re doing the houe system for heating and air in which He will be including a in home sprinkler system in case of fire(the house is nearly 100 yrs old, the joys of my Lord being an engineer by trade) for all of the cats there are carriers and one of two of the Jeeps is always here considering His wife/my Mistress works locally and we have bottled water,med supplies,dry human and cat food always handy.So if we ever had to we could evacuate. as far as Katrina and the Dome, last year in early winter and spring i worked on the steamboats in New Orleans.During the day when we had off time we could walk around town.i wasn't there when it happened but seeing what i did last year,there is still a long way to go in fixing everything.the boats i worked on are docked not far from the levees that broke and many of the workers on the ships pre Katrina didn't come back.I don't blame them. the government there could have done much better than they did trying to get people out i still know many people who can't go back to their homes there and yes some of them are still having to stay in shelters,that's where i met them.

It'd probably take me about an hour to get stuff together. I have a 2006 Mercury Gran Marquis with a HUGE trunk in it so I could take a lot of stuff! As they say in East Boston, "You could get 6 bodies in that trunk!" The cat and his food and water, clothing, food, water, a couple of firearms and ammo, paperwork, my fiddle and plenty of room left for a neighbor or two. All my "important" paperwork is in a safe deposit box, passport, birth certificates, social security card etc and some silver dollar coins. Even if we had a "manditory" evacuation I'd probably stay anyway to keep the looters away or shoot them. I have plenty of "hurricane water" and canned food stored away so I could last for about 2 months.

I live about 15 minutes away from the Ouachita National Forest. I could be away from civilization in half an hour. I keep a compass, a trenching tool (doubles as an axe or a shovel), a good knife, rope, maps, a poncho that can be used for making a shelter, a flashlight with extra batteries, binococulars, a revolver with ammo, and about $100 cash in my truck at all times. If I was leaving the house, I would take all the canned and dry food, a rifle and shotgun, ammo, and all my paperwork and identification. I could be out of Dodge in half an hour. I'd have to decide if the cat was coming or not depending on the crisis.
