Subspace is a wonderful place

Does someone want to explain subspace to me?  I am just....lost...

Subspace (also sub space, headspace, flying, or floating), in the context of a BDSM scene, is the psychological state of the submissive partner. The term is unrelated to the mathematical term subspace.

Subspace is a metaphor for the state the submissive's minds and bodies are in during a deeply involving play scene. Many types of BDSM play invoke strong physical responses. The mental aspect of BDSM also causes many submissives to mentally separate themselves from their environment as they process the experience. Deep subspace is often characterized as a state of deep recession and incoherence. Deep subspace may also cause a danger in newer submissives who are unfamiliar with the experience, and require the dominant to keep a careful watch to ensure the submissive isn't placing him or herself in danger. Many submissives require aftercare.

Not everyone agrees that this state achieved most often by SM should be called "subspace" -- I, for one, see it more as "bottomspace".

SubbieOnWheels -> RE: subspace (1/22/2008 11:32:55 AM)

My Dom has said I've "almost" gotten to subspace. How do I know when I'm getting there? And how does He know?

I'm relatively new to the scene (heck - strike that "relatively"), so I'm not sure of the terminology.

[:)]  Congratulations!  Going into subspace is a heady experience.

lynn20063 -> RE: subspace (1/22/2008 11:54:02 AM)

Never been there...but I hear it's wonderful,lol
I am not much of a masochist though , so I doubt I'll ever see it

sweetwenchie -> RE: subspace (1/22/2008 11:57:51 AM)

Pain is not the only sensation that can send one into space.  [:)]

I've never heard that before, I like it.
I'm able to get to a roughly similar state through "subbing" rather than play, so I think I'll use the two words to differentiate, at least to myself.
Thanks!

lynn20063 -> RE: subspace (1/22/2008 12:32:08 PM)

well,I am really too new to know much,so I'll take your word for it

I have been in one D/s relationship and have not played much other than that. and our relationship was light on the S&M . The emotional intensity and how I felt when being submissive was wonderful enough for me  :)

fullofgrace69 -> RE: subspace (1/22/2008 12:49:17 PM)

All right - so what's the difference between subbing and play?

(Oh, dear. There goes any pretension of knowing what I'm doing here.)

RCdc -> RE: subspace (1/22/2008 1:18:45 PM)

Im not entirely sure if this would fit everyones definition, but I would sugesst that submission would be different to play in a 'bottoming' sense?  Does that make any more sense?

mbes -> RE: subspace (1/22/2008 1:19:19 PM)

Sorry, I just use "subbing" for any situation which involves submission. It can be as simple as kneeling at his feet, or stopping what I'm doing at his request. Those alone won't get me to the really good headspace, but when combined with others they sometimes will help. Sex also involves "subbing" frequently.
Play would be b&d, or s&m, anything involving stronger physical sensations. or more intricate instructions.
If I can do it in front of family and friends (except the sex part), it's "subbing". If it's reserved for alone time, it's play! [:D]
Those are my usages, though, I'm sure others use the words differently.
