As bizarre as it sounds, it's not surprising. The whole whole royalties payment system is byzantine, but you have to figure that songwriters and musicians have to get some kind of payment for their work. Laws affecting satellite and internet radio are due to be revised sometime in March, and a number of internet radio stations are predicting they may shut down then because they can't afford to make royalties payments.

It's sad, because I 've grown quite accustomed to Internet radio, where I can find obscure programs like 1940's big band tunes to sailor's chanties! I'd hate3 to see it go away.

Chances are there's goign to be some kind of major shakeup in the next year or so.

People who can't listen to music are not likely to buy it unheard.  When no one is buying anymore maybe the recording industry will remove its greedy head from its arse.

Hmm.. I wonder what role these people play?  http://getmonthlyincome.com/  They are up but not up as if they are waiting for something. The laws to change maybe? Has anyone delt or heard of these people?

Total agreement here. First they fuck with my tv to make me buy basic channels/cable and now my radio! Music is my soul, and that's gonna hurt like hell. But I think it's gonna hurt the industry more.

I dont listen to the radio any more... I hate the commercials I hate the fact that they never play what I want to hear and I REALLY hate the stupid DJs. I havent bought an album since I made the mistake of buying the last Disturbed album.

Gwynvyd -> RE: radio pay to play law pending...lol (1/21/2008 9:15:53 PM)

I buy and listen to a lot of music.. however the music station I listen to around and about town isnt going to get touched...  ( it is a christian rock station) http://www.spiritfm905.com/  so I am safe there with them not going off air because of this. Whew. That would suck.

I think the real issue is who is entitled to Royalties.   If a radio station can't compete (assuming they can't afford the royalties) then they can't.   It is called free enterprise.

More likely that they will demand the taxpayers bail them out.

I would like to announce today the formation of a new recording label.

One hand clapping.

Don't you all rush me, now.

DesFIP -> RE: radio pay to play law pending...lol (1/22/2008 8:17:41 AM)

It's odd, because even today there are charges of payola, artists and labels paying the djs to play music. Since as others have said, nobody buys music they haven't heard before.
