I know most topics in here have to do with politics, world news, etc., but since this isn't specificly BDSM-related, I thought I'd post it here. I've heard that straight razors, when properly used, give one a closer shave...is this true? I've been wondering about this, and I thought maybe someone here uses them. Anyone? Yep they do, but it's a tricky learning curve.

i use gilette sensor excel but its a lesbian razor... and skintimate (or whatever) shave gel... the type of cream/gel is just as important as the razor. you will go through many products before finding one that works since everyones skin/hair is different. my beef is the fucking blades are expensive as hell. pack of 4 is like $14

I have a Rolls, gracefully restored - and I am going to use it this week! I have to be brave... I have used a cut throat and yes, it does give a much better leg shave - but then, I am female. the.dark.

.. I like a close shave. I use a quatro- 4 blade hand razor- it has a battery and vibrates. i cut myself alot. not on purpose.

Why I use a straight razor, a superb blade that just gets better and better, a total cost of £3.45 off ebay, and I strop it on my leather belt, it works fine. Replacement blades cost £$£$, last a short while and become yet more waste . Shaving soap, I use the stick type, my current stick is coming for a years use and a cheap bristle brush. Would like a silver tip badger brush, I believe they are good for tantalising nipples.

Advice; Search the net, there is a video out there somewhere on how to use a straight.I did have it, but deleted as I now know. Also, join the straight razor forums, lots of similar people there and good advice

I use an old Gilette double edged safety razor. It does give a good shave, but you have to take your time with it. The trick with those razors is letting the blade glide across your face. You don't press down on them. I like using them because the blades are cheap compared to all the multi blade razors. I am just not convinced that a razor with 4 blades is any more effective than a razor with one blade. Here is a website where you can buy straight razors and copies of the old Gillettes. I do think a quality razor is preferrable. the cheap ones rip up my skin. many of us are in a hurry- wash face w wash cloth- and then soap, THEN apply shave cream, .....

Just thinking about what you wrote there about the Vit E being the possible expense in your concoctions. Well skin condition, mine has got better since I started just using a straight blade and simple shaving soap. Aftercare being cold water to close the pores followed by a moisturiser in the form of unscented alcohol free shaving balm and then a suitable quality aftershave. Using a straight blade or indeed the 'Rolls' system, the action actually exfoliates the skin.

I shave in the shower to save time. I have a mirror hanging in there, and it is just easier to do. The steam from the shower makes all the hair on your face stand up, and I never get razor bumps any more. After I get out of the shower, I splash a little aftershave on, and I am good to go. I know a lot of people advocate the alcohol free aftershave, but I can't use them. The alcohol free stuff always leaves me with razor bumps. I have been using English Leather for the last year. It's great, and not to expensive. I used to use Old Spice, but I got told too many times by girls that I smelled like their grandpa. [:D]

I took up shaving with a straight razor while I was in the service. When you have a couple of dozen guys trying to use a half dozen sinks you run out of elbow room. Start flinging soap off of a straight razor a little below waist level and suddenly you have all the room you need. Start with a good quality razor (read not made in China,Taiwan or Pakistan) and practice using the back side of the blade till you work up enough courage to use the sharp side. Plane ole shaving soap and a mug coupled with a good badger brush and you are in for a close,smooth and clean shave every time. Keep your blade sharp with a strop. There is a little trick of always rolling the blade across the back to change sides thus eliminating the chance of cutting your strop and dulling or even breaking the blade in one stroke. If your blade is not sharp enough to use a strop begin the sharpening process on a good quality stone. On the stone the process is reversed (push and pull the blade into the stone just the opposite of using the strop). Test for sharpness by drawing the blade across your finger nail and never with a piece of paper. thompson

Much prefer a straight razor (I tend to give/get lots of nicks if I use a disposable, as others have said, it does give a 'cleaner' finish. I feel it's important to open the pores up firstly by washing the face/other parts of the body in warm water and while still damp, apply shaving cream. To the bugger that nicked my pearl handled razor after a session, I'd like it returned! and to Slaveboyforyou... Old Spice is still a very sexy scent on a man.

The closest shave I've ever had was from a straight razor, but I've never gotten one myself after a buddy showed some spectacular scars he had from trying to learn to use one! I use a Gilette Mark V Fusion--five blades. It's a good shave, and I've got a machine that dispenses hot lather, which is great!

Aw, adoracat, that's b/c it's associated with a particular person (your father) and you're instantly reminded of an unpleasant past if you smell it. Do you think you'd still feel the same way about the scent if it wasn't associated with your father? I feel the same way about lavender. I associate it with a specific person, not a very nice one, and although the scent isn't repugnant, I can't help but associate lavender with that person and it has become an unpleasant scent as a result.
