Hey, I grew up in Pa., close to Rickett's Glen state park.....if you haven't hiked the waterfalls there I'd recommend it!    I went to school in Williamsport.

Greylynn -> RE: slayings in my town, :-( (1/19/2008 5:28:32 PM)

It's sad.

Two days ago a 17 year old here was killed for protecting his mother against robbers that broke in.

One the the kids at the highschool 3 blocks from my house was arrested for killing a store clerk.  He was 15.  His share of the take...$50.

My son has a friend who lost his bother to a drive by.

My coworker lost her son to a drive by.

One of my co-workers held another one hostage and killed himself.

Local comany laying of 200-1000 workers
Another one laid of 36
Sprint laying off 6000

It'd be nice to hear about the good things that happen every once in awhile, but they don't happen anywhere near as much as the bad shit.

Bald eagle Stae park is absolutely wonderful. Do you ever miss PA?  Billtown has had its problems these days.   A mayor invited a ton of druggies to  rehab there- some did, but many did not- and made Billtown well, less nice.  Tho not big city yet-    I wondered why they put the high school way up on a hill.  The slightest weather and they close the school. It also looked like one way in or out-   Alot of one way streets. Do you ever miss the local humor?  Or anything about the area?  Just curious.

Jersey Shore is nice- Hughsvlle, Watsontown....

I hear you. I spent 25 years in Chicago.  I left for rural PA.  It was a hard decission.  It has been good for me.  Ild go further out- maybe otehr parts of the state. I doubt I would leave PA. Tho- I would not choose to live in a metro.  It just isnt for me.   :-)

A buddy of mine was visiting someone a few streets away, when an altercation happened between he and a group of Black youths. Believe me that is not the word he used, but for the sake of not getting thrown off here, Black youths will suffice. They were throwing rocks at him and his olady. A few minutes later my neighbor and I and another show up in two vehicles. It is dark. The were in hiding but it was gleaned from the "grapevine" that they saw that when this dude calls, people show up, and more importantly, it is not the police.

Well geez...thanks ever so much for not using the "n" word because goodness knows i'd HATE to see you get thrown off...not because it's derogatory or insulting in any way, of course etc...as a former "black youth" i salute you...middle finger in the air.  i grew up around mostly white youths, and ironically enough, they have altercations and commit crimes too.  It's a universal problem...the difference is your expectations of one group compared to another.  BTW...i magically escaped the crime that all us black youths apparently gather together to commit on a daily basis...but i am sure that if a child of mine grew up and was prejudged by a bunch of scared morons based on the color of their skin, and felt threatened in any way...i'd go on a spree of biblical proportions on your punk asses...

Oh have you opened up the can o worms.. *big bright smile* *cracks her knuckles*

Im glad I asked. I will.  I told the neighbors crime counts on others to see nothing.  Many in my family were forced to move.... it happens. At a certain point tho- one has to arrive.  The jail system here is brutal- but thats good for law and order.  Many trouble makers simply go back to the big city when they see just how it is here.  I love your "can do" attitude.  Thanks so much!!!

I am glad any time I can help. I just hate it when people sit back and whine oh what can I do about XYZ situation when there is almost always something they can do if they get off thier collective asses. You are 100% correct. criminals do count of people to do, and see nothing... people do not "want to get involved" then bemoan why no one saw thier grandma get mugged and didnt stop the SOB.  We can all do something about most situations.. but if you are doing nothing you are usualy contributing to the issues. I am glad you are willing to make an effort and a change. *smiles*

Gwyn,
Who really did like the Neighborhood watch folks when she was a K-9 Officer.

By and large the thugs have mostly moved on the areas with a nightlife.   We dont have much gong on here- so many city slickers move on out of boredom.  I know my neighbors sized me up- and after I passed- well- they are stuck with me and me them.  There is a certain expectation here in this general area. fall short of it- and the city comes down on the person. In September when i got back from my trtip- the neighbors were standing outside- I went to bed- and they stodd out for the longest time. the next day they told me what was going on. a gun was tossed per a traffic stop.  Well they retrieved it- blah blah blah. The police never came for it as they were very busy breaking up fights they said. Long story short- is that I cant do it alone- nor can they. the criminal element will move on to easier pickings.

I was wondering why the realitor sized me up the way she did. She wanted to know it was a good fit.

I guess I can talk in circles.  I dont think one can completely escape crime....it does seem to nip it in the bud- the residents have a better chance...

I guess I have reached out more the past year. I had to.  Mopimg around doesnt cut it.

The gangs  pretty much got their way when I lived in Chicago.  But this aint Chicago.  I guess when one is 20 fast living is fun. Then when one hits 40- one seen too much of the downside of that.  I know the gangs just wanted to scare me way back when. Gosh- that re-opening peices of the past- [best] I will leave in the past.

Hugs and smiles!  You ROCK!

I miss the hills and the trees, the rocks and the scenery; Oh, the mountain laurel in springtime!   Most of my family lives there and I get home about once a year so I’ve retained that east coast humor!
Williamsport was such a quiet dinky town when I was in school; we’d walk downtown at night and weren’t afraid, but things have changed everywhere.

pahunkboy -> RE: slayings in my town, :-( (1/19/2008 7:25:41 PM)

The town goes wild over little league world series. You cant get a hotel room for 100 miles.  The tikes are cute.  Knoebles isnt a rip off park [yet]   The trees- hardwood were taken down in the 1900s- now back. The Japenese had their eye on them.  Sadly i80 is changing. One could drive for hours and not see much civilization.... now my last drive on it- noticeable truck stops and sprawal. *siges* I looked at u a place up near shunk area- and some lady [directions]  took me there- to make sure I found it. I had seen THAT in decades.   BTW- if the tollway happens - it will be $25 from Ohio to exit 210.  [one way] fierce opposition to it- I sorta doubt it will happen, not with Wies and Walmart against it...among others...

catize -> RE: slayings in my town, :-( (1/19/2008 7:40:27 PM)

[sm=ofcourse.gif]I’d forgotten about the Little League Series, it was a huge deal even way back when……….
and Knoebles Grove what fun I had there!  Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Between gas prices and tollways it’s almost cheaper to fly out rather than drive, but if I fly I’m stuck without a car and get a little stir crazy stuck on the homestead with my crazy family………ha ha.

PaHunk, No, don't paint over them, paint another gang's initials or whatever they call them beside them and paint a cross out mark over the origional one.
Then the next day you walk up to the gang guys and say; "Hey, I thought you guys wear blue scarves not red ones."
"I saw about 20 guys last night wearing red scarves painting something on a wall."
Then you sit back and watch the fun.

LOL.   The police have publically said- gangs are her locally -but havent taken root- yet. Im not good at street fighting- but I can swing a painbrush.... even a retireee can notice things when others are away...

the mood of the area- is -well- aware.   oh well- i guess i wont lose sleep over it. it isnt to the point of random gun fire at night..... :-)  many of the thugs are starter thungs not real seasoned...
