I'm continually amazed by people, even law-enforcement officials, who treat the Taser like some kind of Star Trek weapon set on 'stun'. The human heart is regulated by electricity, so when you put more electricity into the body, naturally there's going to be an adverse risk! [shakes head sadly] Some people!

The use of a taser on someone that's been in a car accident recently who isn't actively dangerous and violent is entirely suspect to me. I can't imagine being in an accident and not being a bit upset and I also can't imagine the officer in question took into account the physical responses our body has to automobile accidents when using the taser. In fact, in this article there is one case cited of someone that was on cocaine when they were tased and died and it's cited as a support. It's not, if someone is known to be in a condition where there heartrate is elevated, tasing is a bad idea and that was repeatedly stated in the observation of training I was involved in on tasing and law enforcement here locally.

Look, if the Troopers didn't have a taser, then they would have pulled out a gun. Pointing a taser at me would have me going "Ok, I'll shut up." just as fast as a gun would. Since the guy decided not to back down from the taser, a gun wouldn't have made a difference. So in essence, he still would have been shot and killed. Yeah, wrecks can cause just about anyone to be aggitated but cops are very serious when they tell you to chill out. You're alive and safe. It's best to take a deep breath and keep that way while everthing gets sorted out. You can later show your temper in court or over the phone with insurace agents.

Unfortunately Fangs, being in law enforcement means you do have to deal with people being upset and seeing people at their worst. Endangering their lives in response to the fact they are being a pain in the ass but not violent is not appropriate with either a taser or a gun.

Since its not lethal in the greater majority of cases it is used they abuse the use of it. The use is as part of the standard arrest procedure as if it were part of protocol like handcuffing someone. Owner put up several vids where they used it because people we arguing with them. Police dont use a handgun when someone argues with them because a handgun is lethal. I would rather they stuck with handgubs that way at least they wont pull it unless "their life is in danger".
