Do any of you have any scars from a previous whipping or caning? Sorry for the random question. I'm just a bit curiuos if these things can cause scarring.

Yes. My scar is from a horsehair flogger. The tails make small cuts on the skin each time you are hit and the dominant accidently flogged a patch of my skin off. I really didn't feel it and they didn't notice, it's just a patch of mildly discolored skin. Itches though...

::Sigh:: I wish. Even my branding scar has faded to near illegibility.

Some people are more prone to scarring than others. Yes, if you've been beaten to the point of bleeding, it is quite possible to come away with scars, either temporary or permanent. Usually, such scars will fade in a year or two. If you want the scars to remain visible, the area needs to get a serious workout while still on the mend - have the dominant paddle the injured area regularly to help build up keloid tissue. If you're really that big on scars, though, just get cut and use one of the normal (and safer) methods of enhancing the scar. If you want the scars to fade or are worried about attracting unwanted attention, vitamin E, aloe vera, and skin moisturizer will help the scars to fade quickly and without very much fuss.

i wish i did. i mark up really fast, i've been asked by obligated reporters if i've been abused before because some of my accidental bruises were that dark. but nothing will scar permantly.

Interesting thoughts here. Can someone comment if many submissives want permanent marks from a whipping or caning?

I ask because permanent scarring is not something I'm into. I'd rather start with a fresh canvas each time.

Permanent marks are usually a sign of purposeful application or a lack of experience and knowledge in how to do a particular activity.

The first is positive then second can have serious consequences.

Remember that most of the items we use are toned down version of instruments that were designed to punish or control others in non-consensual relationships. The original goal was to inflict damage and to be a reminder to that person and others of the consequences of disobedient or criminal behavior. Therefore we should never be surprised if we can use these toned down item or even the real deal to also cause damage.

Marks is one of the big issues I cover not only in negotiations by as an on-going discussion in a relationship. People can change their minds on the issue. I once had a boy who literally begged me to mark him permanently but since he was young and we were fairly new to each other I gave him a mark that I knew through experience would only last two or three days. As I suspected once his scene high ended and he saw the mark he freaked. He was very grateful that I did not take his begging any more seriously and had simply given him a taste of what he was asking about.

It is something that both parties should think about.

That of course varies widely. Quite a few people I know would rather avoid permanent marking, except as a decorative statement. Many submissives I've spoken to don't even like the idea of heavy bruising. With the exception of the one purposeful instance of branding, I have never wanted scars per se, but I take a certain macho pride in my wounds and showing off how much punishment I can handle. I certainly would not be adverse to scars, but so far, the only injuries on my body which have ever really scarred all involved ritual bloodletting. Apparantly, unlike mere mortal masters, when the gods take their ounce of flesh, it leaves a mark.

i would be very surprised to find out that i'm in the majority. but for me it takes on an almost spiritual aspect with my brand of god/des worship, and i would love carrying perament marks assuming i could hide them (i'm currently working on my masters eventually will enter a PhD program and am already starting to interact with professional circles that, while accept the work with BDSM i do as a way of furthering social understanding, probably don't want to look at my scars in the middle of a conference either. but i doubt that many people take this position.

Personally? I'd rather just have a sore bottom/ back/ whatever than a marked one.

I just think there isn't much to say about marks like that.

It's tough to get permanent whipping scars. They really would have to be "maintained", or allowed to get infected, which is not a pretty thought. The skin would have to be opened pretty seriously.

i have a couple of marks that seem to stay (how long i won't know) from single tail pops....little dark marks here and there that have lasted a month or more at this point.

Hmmm, it is kind of a dark fantasy of mine. A slippery slope I'm afraid to start on. I love temporary marks to death, and I even love non-BDSM scars that I have (badges of honor from rock climbing etc.), and I fantasize about edgier play and getting scars from whipping or cuttings, but I'm afraid I'd enjoy it too much and end up really disfigured after a few years, so I'm trying to stay away from that in reality. I need a dominant who has more self control/restraint in that respect than I do in order to induge it and not go overboard.

Not really. Scarring isn't something I'm really into and I'd rather not have the one I have. It doesn't bother me but if I had a choice it wouldn't be there anymore. That said, some of the things we may get into later down the road have a higher risk of leaving scars and that doesn't bother me.

Am not submissive, but I do like to bottom and yes, there have been and I'm sure will be occasions from which I'd wish I'd had permanent scarring.

I've always liked scars because, at least in my experience, they always have a story from one's life attached to them. They're a physical marker of experience and I feel a profound beauty in scars as changes life makes on the body... making the happenings one with our form. I express such things through other forms of body modification and love all of my scars.

I don't want them from everyone or every bottoming, but certain ones that are special for some reason to me.

i have many scars.. not really from whippings but numerous ones from cuttings and a few just from scratches obtained during play.. my skin is pretty pale and tends to scar dark pink at first.. many of them fade over a few yrs time to whitish/silver but a few more serious ones have maintained that dark pink/purple color.. my branding, which is just a star about 3" across, failed to scar that boldly and ive since had it redone professionally twice more.. each time ive scrubbed with an old toothbrush and alcohol for wks attempting to irritate it into scarring.. its coming along after 3 times.. finally..

and yeah i love each and every one of my scars .. i remember each one lovingly

I like the idea of applying permanent scars, but I wouldn't want any on me.
I actually have a scar now from a sharp fingernail that goes all the way accross my back, but it should fade pretty quickly, hopefully.

i have scars but not from whipping or caning, mine come from being bitten on the neck when i was struggling too much, and from being cut on the back with a key on a train...dont ask......was a huge scar but its started to fade now and hiding the neck scar was rubbish cos of where it was but again its basically faded now which is good, i dont really mark for long now though so dont get scars easily.

There's a masochist in the Nashville scene who was so proud of a particularly vicious shot he took from a single tail that he had the outline of the wound tatoo'd over once it healed. (He didn't want to chance the scar fading.)
