Snow in Baghdad!

First time in 60 years??!

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Snow fell on Baghdad on Friday for the first time in memory, and delighted residents declared it an omen of peace.

"It is the first time we've seen snow in Baghdad," said 60-year-old Hassan Zahar. "We've seen sleet before, but never snow. I looked at the faces of all the people, they were astonished," he said.

"A few minutes ago, I was covered with snowflakes. In my hair, on my shoulders. I invite all the people to enjoy peace, because the snow means peace," he said.

Traffic policeman Murtadha Fadhil, huddling under a balcony to keep dry, declared the snow "a new sign of the new Iraq."

The funniest part is that they're blaming it on - are you ready? Say it with me, now...

"Global warming"!!!

quote:

The director of the meteorology department, Dawood Shakir, told AFP that climate change was possibly to blame for the unusual event.
"It's very rare," he said. "Baghdad has never seen snow falling in living memory.
"These snowfalls are linked to the climate change that is happening everywhere. We are finding some places in the world which are warm and are supposed to be cold."

Hey, my ass is itchy!
Ah,... silly me, Global Warming!

FangsNfeet -> RE: Global Warming Strikes Again! (1/11/2008 9:13:49 PM)

If and when it's cold enough to sleet, you'll get snow sooner or later. When it sleets, that means that the weather has the right conditions and potental to also snow temperature wise.

If it's been cold enough to snow in Baghdad over and over again through out history, then how can the actual snow be related to Global Warming?

Well, that settles it: Global warming is a hoax.

That really is funny because there is, like, no mention of global warming in the article, you know... guys.

It's in the thread title but, you know, it's not, like... actually in the thread... content...

Just saying...

Issues asside, hopefully the snow will encourage everyone to chill out.

Yes, yes; I'm aware that that pun constitutes a war crime.

sharainks -> RE: Global Warming Strikes Again! (1/12/2008 4:43:28 AM)

I really don't see the global warming thing either.  When I was a kid  summers here used to include 115 degree heat all of July and August.  It isn't that way anymore.  This past December we got more snow and ice storms than we usually get all year.

Sanity -> RE: Global Warming Strikes Again! (1/12/2008 5:09:28 AM)

You're wrong.

"These snowfalls are linked to the climate change..."

It's in the part of my reply to FirmHandKY's post that you  ignored.

No. The funniest thing is that you are showing you know nothing about what scientists predict. If you did, you would know that this type of scenario is exactly what is expected. As global warming takes place it is predicted extreme and unusual weather events will take place.

Zensee -> RE: Global Warming Strikes Again! (1/12/2008 5:37:30 AM)

I searched the linked article and there is no mention of the words global or warming anywhere on the page, let alone in the article.

Please read the article again (and what I actually wrote, while you are at it).

You're going to argue semantics? LOL... and pretend that you really have no idea what they mean when they say the words  "These snowfalls are linked to the climate change that is happening everywhere."

I'm sorry, that's just funny!

Lordandmaster -> RE: Global Warming Strikes Again! (1/12/2008 8:16:27 AM)

Talking about global warming to people who don't understand it and don't WANT to understand is a waste of time.  So I'm not going to write anything very long here.  But you should all know that the Defense Department has already taken seriously the possibility that North America will be thrown back into an Ice Age because of a disruption to the Great Ocean Conveyor Belt.  And that would be caused by global warming.  It's called GLOBAL warming.  Get the word GLOBAL?  Not Baghdad warming.  Not "my town used to have 115-degree summers and now it doesn't" warming.

Here's the article, straight from NASA:

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2004/05mar_arctic.htm

And another one from Fortune Magazine:

It is semantics, Sanity, but it matters.  "Global Warming" has become the preferred terminology of a politically motivated group that blames climate change on capitalism.  You brought in the buzz-term, when the article was talking about it from the less loaded term of "Climate Change."

Think in terms of, 'it's happening and it's all your fault because you're baa-aaad' vs "it's happening and we don't really understand the complexities."

Sanity -> RE: Global Warming Strikes Again! (1/12/2008 8:31:40 AM)

A list of everything caused by Global Warming (to which you can now add the first snow in Baghdad in over 100 years):

Sanity -> RE: Global Warming Strikes Again! (1/12/2008 8:36:01 AM)

If you want to be taken seriously, quit talking down to people. Even though I'm not hysterical about Global Warming I understand it at least as well as you do, if not better.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Global Warming Strikes Again! (1/12/2008 8:47:14 AM)

Why don't we just drop our pants and compare peckers?  Really, Sanity, I accept that we're never going to convince each other, but asserting inappropriate authority just makes you look ridiculous.

If you REALLY understood global warming better than I do, you wouldn't pretend that snow in Baghdad invalidates it or couldn't be caused by it.

This, coming from someone who just moments ago tried to suggest that anyone not in agreement with him is somehow ignorant...

I swear, it's just like Comedy Central here this morning!

I wasn't pretending anything, I was poking fun.

this isn't meant in reply to anyone on this post, i'm just responding in general....

at any rate, i do believe the earth is going through a change but i think it is natural and would be happening whether evil mankind was here or not.  don't get me wrong, i'm all for recycling and being responsible and not wasteful and all that good stuff.

i also think Al Gore is a stuffed shirt that knows how to sell his views...he's simply a salesman.  this is my opinion, please don't flame me or ask to see my pecker.
