RAMALLAH, West Bank - President Bush, summing up meetings with both sides in the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, said Thursday that a peace accord will require “painful political concessions” by each. Resolving the status of Jerusalem will be hard, he said, and he called for the end of the “occupation” of Arab land by the Israeli military.

“Now is the time to make difficult choices,” Bush said after a first-ever visit to the Palestinian territories, which followed separate meetings with Israeli leaders in Jerusalem the day before.

Bush is in the Mideast for eight days, trying to bolster his goal of achieving a long-elusive peace agreement by the end of his presidency in a year. Speaking at his hotel in Jerusalem, he said again that he thinks that is possible.

Got a little hint for everybody, Israel is never pulling back to the 67 borders without being militarily forced to do so and they shouldn't.

Close the refugee camps in their territory. Make a one time offer of limited self rule to selected areas of the territories, specifically not including Old Jerusalem, give the Palestinains a month or two to organize and hold a referendum then when it fails integrate the territories into Israel and anyone unwilling to accept Israeli rule should be shown to a border. Treat all further terrorist acts as criminal acts and punish co conspirators harshly. Let all their neghbors know that smuggling of weapons and explosives is an act of war and will be responded to as such.

A bunch of dead palestinians later, peace.

DomKen, and you are an Israeli? Then you wonder why "Arabs" dislike Americans...

Well Level this gesture comes too late...and it will never be endorsed by Palestinians as we all know Bush has historically been supportive through his whole presidency of Israel and its policies, which are in direct contravention of UN resolutions in regards to pre-1967 borders.

Bush is trying to say he "accomplished" something by the time he leaves his presidency, but this will not work, it takes very hard commitment and not one-sidedness as showed by Bush and his Israeli allies.

You have to remember the grand scheme in all of this;  Bringing about the return of Jesus Christ to the earth by setting the stage as described in the Book of Revelation.  The Temple has to be rebuilt, you see.  By Gods chosen people.

It's a simple plan.  Israel signs away damn near everything, in exchange for one thing.  Peace.  The Palestinians fuck it up.  Israel, now the victim, takes the gloves off, and the world shrugs at the Arabs.  Dome of the Rock gets bulldozed, and Jesus gets his landing zone.

And Mike Huckabee wants to be President next.

...i tend to agree. Too little, too late. Now, if a first term President says the same thing in their first month then we may be talking........

I think it's rather disingenuous for Bush to be telling Israel not to occupy Palestine while he is still occupying Iraq.

What an idiot!
He needs to get his dumb ass back here and secure our borders and stop trying to tell other countries what to do with their borders!
What an Imbecile!

OK You're and Israeli or maybe an old time bible basher who really does believe god gave the Jews Israel or maybe you find it convenient to support a people who stole other people's land because Americans stole America? Think about what you say and wonder why most of the world hates America (though of course they'll gladly take your money as well.)

Too little too late and I can't see Israel withdrawing while the USA is bankrolling it, even when it openly flouts UN resolutions, breaks international law, commits human rights abuses and just about everything else people who believe in Bush's idea of civilisation do.

The irony being here, the US is supporting a rogue nation that was built on terrorism while accusing everyone else in the middle east of being terrorists. No wonder the US has the name for being the ultimate hypocrite.

If only he'd put the same commitment into this from the off - this after all is the source of 90% of "terrorism" - as he did towards removing stability a little further east and making the whole thing worse.

As for possible judgement day scenarios - perhaps a little far fetched? although I'll grant, there are some very odd people within religions of all sorts.

Personally I'd welcome a judgement day - a Christian one even, though I'm far from being Christian at all - an apostate in fact who should be cast into the pit of whatever it is (suplhur?) by their standards. Yet, I am strongly of the opinion that should such an event occur I'd more than likely be safe, and watching millions of so called Christians tumbling into said pit. Religiosity saves none.

Unfortunately it isn't a few odd religious people here in the US. Pat Robertson, the late Jerry Falwell and the rest of the televangelist turned wannabe theocrats support Israel because they or their truly faithful followers belive in the literal truth of revelations and want the end of the world to occur soon.

Here we go again.   Imagine if he were President eight more years.  Oh, how scary.
I agree with LadyEllen that he needs to put more of the "gun"s money and lives back in his homeland and get on with it.
It is not our problem.
