It has a lot more to do with the person being spanked than the person doing the spanking.  Some people mark if you give them a hard stare, while others don't mark until you break skin.

Our pet Kat marks fairly easily, but heals amazingly fast.  Red welts vanish in hours, and her brand is fading less than 3 months later.  I think she is part Wolverine!

Oh my!  Don't go getting your knickers in a knot.  "Beating" does not always mean "abuse".  In fact, beatings are fun.  And it doesn't matter if your relationship is dd, d/s, m/s, bdsm, abc or xyz.   A widdle panky-pank on the bum with an open hand may cause redness, or in some cases eye-rolling, snickers, even outright giggles.  Keep it up a while you may get more and prettier marks.  Spread your fingers to get the real cool imprints.  Spanking can be done with other implements to create wild and wonderful tableaus on your little white canvas.  Experimentation will tell you what works and what doesn't...as well as being a whole lot of fun.  But as TDW says, some people mark easier than others.  Personally, I would say ifn ya haven't drawn blood (unless negotiated that first), ya'll are doin just fine.  Carry on.

Just wanted to add one thought.

The smaller the surface area of the implement being used, the more likely you are to leave marks.  A cane, which is very thin, leaves marks most every time on most every one.  Large paddles, like a ping-pong paddle, will be less likely to leave marks, as long as you avoid edging it.  A hand is somewhat in between.

I have these great foam garden knee pads they are about 12" x 18" with handles cut out at the top.  They make a great noise and don't leave marks no matter how hard I hit with them...though I wouldn't call the spanking delivered "severe".

Am I kidding. I dont think so. I know a couple of subs who were put in a hospital because some idiot thought hitting someone severly was part of their right of being a Dom. It all boils down to what the sub wants and agrees to. I have a sub friend who dumps Doms because they dont beat her hard enough.

Spanking with the hand will make the bottom quite red for a while, but should not leave perminant marks.  A flogger, paddle or whip will leave a more lasting impression.

Yes and flogger or whip can leave permanent or long term markings if they are what is called "wrapped" around certain parts on the body and when this happens it HURTS like hell.  It is usually done by accident and not on purpose.
I have experienced it bruised for quite a while when my legs were wrapped.  But not permanent marks as of yet and nobody has damaged me enough to go into a hospital.
