Level -> Government sued for 3 quadrillion dollars (1/10/2008 4:14:47 AM)

NEW ORLEANS - Hurricane Katrina's victims have put a price tag on their suffering and it is staggering — including one plaintiff seeking the unlikely sum of $3 quadrillion.

A whopping $3,014,170,389,176,410 is the dollar figure so far sought from some of the largest claims filed against the federal government over damage from the failure of levees and flood walls following the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane.

Of roughly 489,000 total claims, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it has received 247 for at least $1 billion apiece, including the one for $3 quadrillion.

"That's the mother of all high numbers," said Loren Scott, a Baton Rouge-based economist.

You can file law suit against anyone for any amount.    Actually winning such a case and getting awarded such a sum of money is a completely different story.

I could sue YOU for post this story and say it caused me emotional trauma.   That is not to say I would actually win in court, but I COULD file and COULD do so for 3 quadrillion dollars.

Since the US people as a whole cannot pay that amount over 250 years, I'm sure they'll settle for something smaller.

It does beg the question: how much is a human life worth? According to my car insurance, $300,000.

$300K is dirt cheap.     When you are doing risk assessment, you typically say "you can't put a value on human life" and then assign it a value of $1 mil "for estimation purposes ONLY."

If my husband dies, I get 500k just from the military. Personally.. I prefer him alive. He's far more useful to me that way since over the next 10 years or so he will make that much... and use as much of it as he can to spoil me :P

Well its a "bad hurricane" that blows nobody any good
Our old friends the legal profession are on to a winner here.

What is the monetary cost of a life? [:)]

This is what ruins it for all the legitimate people out there who have real cases. Reading this kind of crap makes people assume lawsuits are bogus and awards are all over the top.

kdsub -> RE: Government sued for 3 quadrillion dollars (1/10/2008 12:35:08 PM)

It is a tragedy…but why do people think the government owes them anything… people were warned over and over again.  Yes lets help them…all good people want to help. The fault is in poor planning not with the Corps of Engineers. I’m all for helping people start over but it is not the fault of the Federal government that a hurricane destroys.

The fault is in people that wanted to live there…and still want to live there as if someday another storm won’t do the same thing.

That area should be bulldozed and turned into a park…no one should be allowed to build there again. Help people get started elsewhere but stop the blame pointing… if that must be done then they should point at themselves.

I do not follow your logic. Mind expanding on your meaning?

I want to file a new suit that brings this number up to the smallest possible product of pi and a power of ten..

Aylee -> RE: Government sued for 3 quadrillion dollars (1/10/2008 1:54:15 PM)

Hopefully the government will just say, "Sorry, we are not gonna let you sue us."

trappedinamuseum -> RE: Government sued for 3 quadrillion dollars (1/10/2008 2:32:48 PM)

These people have to prove that they have "standing to sue".

The burden of proof is on them.
