Representatives from AT&T, NBC, and Microsoft met and discussed options for wanting to start filtering the internet by having ISPs "sniff" and monitor what you are sending and recieving from the internet.

The mega-corporations claim they are committed to stop piracy and infringement in copyright material.

“What we are already doing to address piracy hasn’t been working. There’s no secret there,” said James Cicconi, senior vice president, external & legal affairs for AT&T.
“The volume of peer-to-peer traffic online, dominated by copyrighted materials, is overwhelming. That clearly should not be an acceptable, continuing status,” he said. “The question is how we collectively collaborate to address this.”

All of my packets are copyrighted. I have provided Collarme with a limited license to accept and reproduce them, however any ISP making unlawful copies is liable for infringement.

Problem Solved.

Yeah, who the fuck do they think they are?
The U.S. Taxpayers paid for the development of the internet.
It was conceived by the pentagon as a way to keep military units all on the same page.
If they're worried about pirating then let them go to China and Russia where most pirating takes place.

They have a great point.  This said, I'm against it.

Sniffers are far too close to larger privacy infringement, which would strike me as a greater evil.  A system that allowed for sniffers would have to have extensive oversight, to include readily-available public oversight.

Can anybody say, widespread encryption ? This would render their sniffers worthless and would also make life difficult for Homeland Security to monitor the black hats. I'm sure these companies would end up hosting government officials suggesting they stop this nonsense or we might just find the need to audit your company quarterly until every islamo fascist in the world has learned to mellow out.

Ummm...there's nothing private about the Internet. Sniffers are a fact of life for both legimate and illegitmate reasons. The "system" is *only* concerned with delivering data on a best effort basis. I prefer ethereal for my home and employment sniffing needs. *smirks*

Oh and you enjoy all the fake air heads trying to date you just to see who you really are?

Sniffers arent just people trying to see whats, what when needed, or some dick planted on a hacker channel in stealth to listen in.
Sniffers are those a$$heads who act out interest, and other things that fringing on entrapment.
Or pissing you off because there so damn fake.

I say at least give them rules governed by some amendments that keep it at least honest.
Or no doubt its going to get real silly.
