Doesn't Mexico still sell the original Beetle for a couple of thousand dollars?

The new Government designation, which with tax breaks and the manufacturer's commitments cut the Beetle's price tag by nearly 25 percent, has since caused a nationwide run on Mexico's 232 Volkwagen dealerships, which have scarcely been able to meet demand and have an average waiting list of three to four months for new bugs.

A Bargain at $5,300

They stopped making the old Beetles a few years ago.  Even so, I think they sold for close to $5K.  I think they Yugo sold for about that price, and that's the quality car I expect for $2,500.  So I wouldn't say that it's a good thing.

It's a BIG OIL plot.

actually Tatas is one of the most respected brands in India. It already has the majority share in commercial vehicles, huge market share in passenger cars.
It is in the final stages of buying brands like Jaguar and Rover.

So Tata Nano, as the car is called, is a revolution and not a cheap show
