5 boats being driven by Iran's Revolutionary Guard taunted US ships in the Persian Gulf. The boats charged the ships, circled them, and 2 boats dropped white boxes in the water. The USS Hopper (a US Destroyer) recieved a threatning message from the lead boat claiming they were going to blow up the ship.

The USS Hopper came within seconds of opening fire before the Iranian boats backed off and retreated. The commander of the Hopper was going to fire according to the Pentagon and blast the Iranians out of the water.

Iran says it was simply a matter of "misunderstanding."

Back when I was in the service Iran used to try and cause this sort of thing all the time. We did it to them as well. That is how the Vincennes came to shoot down a jet.

I'm betting both sides are still doing various things trying to cause an 'incident' which they can twist to make the other guy be at 'fault'.

There is also the aspect of provoking each other into a response to learn how they will respond.

Its War Games. But it's a bit different.
We and the Russians have been playing games for decades and still do it. Obviously much more intense during the cold war but just a few months ago a few Russian fighter planes violated US airspace and when the US scrambled jets to intercept, the Russian pilots waved a hello and retreated. They actually do that kind of stuff quite often but it rarely makes the news since the cold war is over.

Iran though is a potential enemy and the game they were playing today was much more threatning since it provoked fears of terrorism and the USS Cole incident. Iran needs to tone that stuff down or they'll going to get blown up. They have 5 little speed boats against 3 US warships. That's like trying to beat a tank with a revolver.

I thought you find one fuckhead named "curveball" who will lie and confirm the report that a country was harboring WMD...Then using this faulty fucked up information you parade one of the most dignified and respected individuals that this country has ever seen in front of the U.N. and have him repeat those lies.

That, my friend, is how wars begin. You no longer need a reason like being provoked.  Where have you been of late?  That was so '41.  Get with the times.

I agree with this idea. I've been through the S of H a few times and they always like to play mind games with the ships as the pass through. But it is also a very good location to launch an attack. But the question in both sides heads would be "Can we REALLY take them in the long run?" I think that's the only reason why both sides are holding back. Since we're spending so much man power in Iraq, Iran probably decided that it would be a nice time to test just how prepared the US is to defind it's ships and risk a war with them.

Isn't it wonderful that almost every aspect about this "story" has now been proven to be unfounded.

When are we going to learn?

AP) Sailors in the Persian Gulf have known him for years: a radio operator who taunts and insults passing ships. The rants are heard, logged then mostly forgotten.

But now the phantom voice has taken center stage in the latest flurry of claims and counterclaims between Iran and the United States following a tense high seas confrontation - raising new questions about whether Washington could have gotten a key element of the story wrong.

The radio transmission - a staccato burst suggesting U.S. Navy ships were targeted for explosion - was a central part of an audio-video presentation that U.S. officials claimed showed Iranian speedboats swarming three Navy warships on Jan. 6 in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that is the only entry and exit to the Gulf.

What I read was that the Iranian boats were not being manned by the "gaurd".....They were unarmed. The boats were not the source of the radio transmission and at no time was any U.S. ship considering "opening fire."

When will we wise up? Though I hang to the left, impressively if I may say so myself, I'm wise enough to realize that the "truth" means nothing to either party. But it is refreshing to see the people who brought us WMD's, waterboarding, The Pat Tillman debacle, the surge, mission accomplished, on and on and fucking on and on and on...Have not lost their touch.

It will be cold on Sunday....God Bless our troops and precious.
