I think it's the wanting what you can't have, and the challenge.

Also, perhaps if a lady knows a guy taken, she might be a lot more comfortable being friendly in a platonic way, without worrying about the guy's advances.

This subject takes my back to my college days when my best guy friend asked me why, after finally getting engaged to a girl who was our classmate, other girls who wouldn't give him the time of day - as a friend or otherwise - were now "throwing the pussy at [him]."

I told him that I wasn't really sure, as I hadn't been elected the spokewoman of these particular bunch of whores, but I could only offer him a few suggestions:

1) They were only teasing him;
2) They wanted to test his resolve to remain faithful to one girl for the rest of his life;
3) They were worried that his dick would soon be off the market and wanted to see if it was worth ripping apart an established relationship; or
4) They were just a bunch of evil bitches who liked to see him suffer and wonder if they were really offering up the goodies.

Any or none of the above could have applied. Who knows...

Women can be catty and vicious to other women. It's like some sort of bitchfest at times to see how low one woman can possibly go to try to cause conflict in another woman's relationship if she feels jealous of it or wants what they have together for herself. It's rather sad to tear down one person's dream to make yourself feel better. I've met several women who tend to be of the mindset, "If I don't have a happy relationship, I don't want anyone else to have one either." Not the way I like to make friends and encourage others.

But that's just me...

aw damn I have the opposite problem.... I am constantly being hit on by attached male doms, 20 year olds or male subs wanting a mistress..... but I hear you ... I can still recall being married and in later stages of pregnancy and somehow attracting all sorts of guys....still have not figured out why the pregnant woman desire

I would say a combination of the above - I am more likely to be friendly/comfortable hanging out with guys who I expect will NOT hit on me, i.e. men who are in relationships or gay (or slightly afraid of me LOL). If I make a friendly comment to someone who then gloms on like a leech, I am likely to politely distance myself. And yes, if another person (male or female) has gotten the "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval" from one of my friends, I am more likely to consider the new person as partially pre-screened for potential friendship.

You're unavailable, desirable to another woman, not scary or creepy (as you're probably not interested in them), etc. Women love that.

Hell, I completely ignore most people in real life. Won't even look at them, don't learn their names, hardly acknowledge their presense. And, I assure you, I have no single troubles.

I'd encourage you to not consider the female sex drive as rational. Even if the girl herself has a good head on her shoulders, like us men, she still has a very simplistic sex drive that doesn't always seem to correspond with the rational part of the mind.

Men are dogs; they want meat to hump.
Women are cats; they want someone indifferent to cling to and please.

At least, if you go with the tradiational roles. There's plenty of exceptions, but, hey, can't explain everyone in a statement. This, plus I'm sure more people believe themselves to be different than is actually the case.
