mhawk -> others quitting smoking (1/3/2008 6:26:01 AM)

i have seen recent posts of people who want to quit smoking and posts that some are having difficulties with that as well.I'm one of those people myself.I quit smoking at exactly 11:50pm new year's eve.

personally i found something that is working nicely.if anyone has heard of it that is trying to quit, try the Commit lozenges.i say this because they are so nasty that it takes the carvings away quickly.

also what has been helping is the reaction of my Lord and Mistress, they both are very encouraging on my doing this.

I'm on day 24 of not smoking, and doin' fine. I've been on Champix, but have lowered myself to 1/4 dose, and haven't had so much as a mild craving in ages.

that's great to hear! i was wondering how you were doing with that.we were going to try to get me on that but we are still working on getting my health insurance up and running, need it for Champix here.keep up the great work!

One of the reasons I love the health care system here. I can get a months worth of Champix for £7 ($14), and I don't have to pay to see the doctor.

Something you might like (myself and most of my "quit buddies" use it) is quit keeper. It tracks how long you've been a non-smoker, how much money you've saved, how many cigarettes you've not smoked, how much life you've saved and other things. It's great fun.

And you can do this :)
I have been quit for 3 Weeks, 2 Days, 17 hours, 54 minutes and 24 seconds (23 days). I have saved £112.78 by not smoking 474 cigarettes. I have saved 1 Day, 15 hours and 30 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 10/12/2007 21:30

Careful, childoftheshadow.  Don't be suggesting that nationalised healthcare works, around the CM boards.  Not unless you have asbestos lingere. ;)

Hang in there,  mhawk. Find things to replace and interrupt the cravings (drink water, take a walk, apply nipple clamps...) and try restructuring or avoiding the activities that trigger wanting a smoke. The other smoking cessation threads here have lots of good ideas. It's well worth the effort.

Vaccines against niccotine, coccaine, and methamphetamines could be on the market in as little as three years.

Hi,

I am a smoker myself and soon to be a non-smoker I hope. Unfortunately, I was on Chantix from Pfizer and it helped me go from a pack down to two a day in just two weeks. While on my first cycle of it I got a cold and ceased using the Chantix because I did not want to mix the medications. A week later when better instead of picking up Chantix I picked up a smoke and back to square one. Awaiting a doctor's appt. next week to get another prescription. I hardly believe in taking pills but in this case it is the lesser of two evils. Have a great day all, and if anyone knows of any overtly negative effects of Chantix please do share.

Best regards,

sissy

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: others quitting smoking (1/3/2008 5:02:57 PM)

i just opened the second box of the chantix-and i gotta say going to the double dose was different-i now know to eat before taking it-hadnt bothered me on the .5 mg....

i notice im not reaching for one first thing in the am now, and i am payin attention to my triggers more now-like sitting down at this puter-ugh

this is day 8 for me-the one chantix said should be the quit date-but my dr said to let my body decide my quit date.....

I, too, am a smoker and would like to quit very soon because there are too many reasons not to.  The biggest one is that, today, my big brother was diagnosed with lung cancer.  He quit 7 months ago, after smoking for years.  He is supposed to get a biopsy done tomorrow if they can get his fever down enough to proceed.  If you are a "prayful sort," prayers for him are welcomed.  Thank you.

Aneirin -> RE: others quitting smoking (1/3/2008 7:21:45 PM)

My grandmother died of lung cancer, yet she never smoked in her life. Sorry, but I am off two minds as to whether smoking causes lung cancer.I have worked in hiogh dust atmospheres, that being wood dust, Stone dust etc.I was a small tool (no comments please) mechanic, I serviced and repaired wood cutting machinery and stone cutting machinery on a daily basis, an occpation where respiratory protection was not mandatory.Sometimes I used PPE other times not, but starting faulty machines for test purposes resulted in an atmosphere of what the machine was cutting last, and that that includes the 'cowboy' builder who might have found asbestos and I knew many builders who would not care to follow proper procedures, it based upon cost.So there is the worry.

I am a smoker who is in two minds about lung cancer.I certainly do not agree smoking cause lung cancer, but am off the oppinion any particle dust might be responsible wood dust, coal dust, stone dust or any other dust inhaled on a regular day to day basis. It is my sole oppinion that diesel fumes might cause a cancer, that being a known carcinogen.I as a small tools mechanic regularly serviced diesels on a regular basis.I made my concerns to the company which employed me, and was told there was no problem, and this was a blue chip company.

So, I wonder. I would like to be without the need for tobacco, but I enjoy the time out of everything it brings.Time I have found for the self, it being a yogic breath on inhalation,(and yes I do yoga).

I have tried the nicotine replacement therapies, body stickers, inhalers and gum, for me they do not work,They perpetuate the need and so I see as a waste of money.Talk does not work, it is an addiction and should be treated as such, be it a bodily need or a psychological need.Me, it is the latter,I will not quit for me, but I will for another.

I asked my GP about psycho therapies in the form of hypnosis etc, and was told with my strength of mind, it would be fruitless as I am not easily convinced and he would not reccomend giving up that which plagues me so easily, which basically says to me carry on smoking!

I have tried all that is in me, no go.I will I know end it with another, be they 'S' or 'D',it matters not, in close with another if I be 'D', I will submit to my lover!!!

if anyone has some chiantix they aren't gonna use, I'll gladly take it off your hands! ;)

(I have no medical insurance, so I cant afford the Dr. visit, let alone the prescription..*sigh*)

Sanity -> RE: others quitting smoking (1/3/2008 8:00:31 PM)

I understand your feelings about smoking as a part of me still misses it.

I once thought that I'd be a madman without nicotine and I was determined to smoke until I died, but that changed... I smoked for about thirty five years, and I quit cold turkey a year ago come January 15th, and the two main reasons I quit was because cigarettes were getting too expensive, and I felt like smoking made me feel tired. I missed my oxygen, and I know that the carbon monoxide sticks to my blood cells and  just doesn't allow me the same energy.

Besides the lungs, smoking (and nicotine) also affects the heart, voice, cartilage, tendons, blood vessels... the list goes on and on. I can run now, and climb stairs, cuss smokers... (grin) and I don't smell like an ashtray.

Cancer isn't the worst thing you can get from smoking either, you may have to live with emphysema. It gums up your pets' lungs, your walls and  electronics, it makes your insurance cost more. In my case, I want to enjoy the great outdoors better, and I want to spoil my grandchildren.

cabernet -> RE: others quitting smoking (1/3/2008 8:02:46 PM)

I always think it's so weird that there are people who think that smoking doesn't cause lung cancer?  Does it mean that there are people who get it who have never smoked?  Yes, I have a grandmother who died of it as well and she never smoked.  Does it mean that there can be people who smoke their whole lives without getting it?  Yes.  But, who can think that drawing smoke into their lungs repeatedly for years would not do damage to your lungs which can lead to cancer?  It's not the only potential cause of it though.

When I quit smoking, almost 10 years ago, I had to make it the most important thing in my life.  You have to be willing to do whatever it takes.  I had tried quitting on a few previous occasions, but would still smoke when I was out with my friends in bars and stuff.  Eventually that would lead back to my smoking full time.  So I knew if I ever wanted to quit successfully I would have to stop doing that.  So after a month I tried going out and it was too hard, so I went home.  A month later I tried again, and it was still too hard, so I went home.  I didn't try to go out to a bar for a year after that.  And then when I started again, which wasn't very often, I would do okay and not need one.  But the important thing is to know your triggers, and if you have tried to quit unsuccessfully in the past, most likely you know them.

If you have certain friends that you smoke with, don't hang out with them for a while until you are stable.  If they are good friends, they will understand.  If you can't drink coffee without a cigarette, then stop drinking coffee (probably harder for some than quitting smoking!)  If you are used to hanging out in the smoking area at the BDSM club and it's too hard, then don't go to the club for a while.  If there is an activity that you associate with smoking, then do whatever you can to avoid that activity.  You have to make not smoking the priority in your life.  Eventually it will become easier and you can start doing those things again.  Good luck to all those who are trying!!
