MzMia -> New Year's Eve or Day Rituals for Good Luck or Prosperity? (12/31/2007 1:35:03 PM)

It is that time again, hours from the New Year!!
yeeeeeeeeee hawwwwwwwwwwww

Do you have any rituals that you MUST do or have on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day!

I only have a couple.

I MUST have Martini and Rossi Asti Sparkling wine on New Year's Eve.  This is something I started when I was turning 21, and I just always drink it. ** Even though I am a couple of years past turning 21.**

The BIG one for me and many other people is cooking black eyed peas.
I must have my black eyed peas on the 1st day of the New Year!
I was out yesterday buying my black eyed pea's and turkey neck bones to cook them in.
{Yes I season them with turkey neck bones, and I am a vegetarian}.

You MUST eat black eyed peas on New Years Day in order to have good luck in the next year!
I am off to start soaking my peas for tomorrow!

Do you do anything special to bring your prosperity and good luck in the New Year?

Ham, cabbage, carrots, black eye peas, rice, and cornbread.  Am I from the south or what....roflmfao.
You have to have the peas for luck and cabbage for money.  The rest is for good health and prosperity for the coming year.
And as I took my sick neighbor New Year's food, I found two pennies head up so it must work......lol.

I just ate a large bowl of black eyed peas, so I am ready for
a year full of luck and dreams coming true.

I sure wish I had some homemade cornbread!

Some friends of mine who are of Slavic stock wash their hands with coins at the stroke of midnight to bring wealth in the new year.  This year I tried it by rubbing two quarters and a nickel in my hands.

So far all I've found is $10 in Monopoly money but I have high hopes.

In my "neck of the woods" we have to eat blackeyed peas with ham hocks (although i gave up the ham at my doc's advice..lol).  I've been eating them all week..needing all the luck i can get right now..lol.

Happy New Year!!!!

My husband's Cuban family has a tradition of eating twelve grapes as the clock strikes midnight.  You're supposed to eat one grape each time the clock chimes.  If I remember to buy grapes, we usually do that.  Other than that, all we do is have champagne to toast the New Year.

ChainsandFreedom -> RE: New Year's Eve or Day Rituals for Good Luck or Prosperity? (1/1/2008 8:30:09 PM)

We have to eat any type of noodle (long strings=long life), any round fruit (for prosperity, wealth), and beef - no other meat (because beef is heartier= strength). These have to be consumed as the first meal of the new year before we can eat anything else. This ritual comes from my philippine side of the family.

In this part of the south, the traditional meal is something called "Hoppin' John", black-eyed peas, and okra.

My mother-in-law (Italian ancestry, from NYC) says that for good luck, the first person through your front door for the New Year should be a dark-haired man.

Personally, i just try not to blow off any fingers playing with fireworks [:)]

Pork and sauerkraut.  I think it's a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition.  Not sure, but it's been going on in my family for years.

Damn, Katy, I think our families are related......along with Grandma's relish tray, we ALWAYS had pork and sauerkraut for New Years Day.

That same Grandma always threw a handful of change in through the front door the first time she entered the house in the new year, so we'd have wealth all year long.

We have a similar tradition in the North East of England on New Years Day - the first person (called the "first foot") through your door after midnight should be a tall, dark-haired man.

On New Years Eve, it's customary to go 'round all the homes in the village and have a brandy, whiskey etc with them and toast to "health, prosperity and happiness" for the New Year; also, you take a piece a coal of into each home as a symbol of prosperity - something to do with Methodism, I think.

New Years Day is football day here, as is Boxing Day - a long standing tradition - then everyone goes to the village pub and starts the New Year in good old fashion.

You MUST eat black eyed peas on New Years Day in order to have good luck in the next year!

I always make a point, when the hour of midnight arrives, to stand in a doorway and pour out a libation to Janus. Usually champagne, but this year it was whiskey. As to black eyed peas, I will simpl say what I said to my grandmother many many moons ago: I'll make due with skill and cunning to get by. I'm not so desperate for luck that I'm willing to eat black eyed peas. While I have had a few runs of hard luck, I think I can honestly say I have not done poorly overall for my refusal. The bad times in my life have made room for new good, just as Janus intended.
