We already got wacked in 2007 with milk and egg prices!

bipolarber -> RE: food costs to soar in 08 :-( (12/30/2007 11:30:29 AM)

I strongly suggest we start referring to the coming economic crisis as "The Bush Depression" or possibly "The Republican Gift." Let's make sure that future generations remember who saddled us with this coming hardship. May they never be elected to any office higher than dogcatcher again!

Bipolar, I agree but Bush isn't a "Republican" he's nothing more than a "mouthpiece" for big corporations!
They got "their guy" in!
It's not about "Iraq" it's about "Contractors" stealing hundreds of billions from the Taxpayers!
Nice scam eh? Our bridges collapse while WE pay for new bridges, roads, hospitals, schools, highways in Iraq!
Oh, and most of that stuff is on "no-bid" contracts!
Even Hillary Clinton doesn't want to get the Troops out till "2013."
And guess who contributes to her campaign? Yup, those same "Contractors!"
Do you think for one second that she wants to get our Troops out of Iraq? That would involve turning off all those Taxpayer money spiggots, wouldn't it?
I call Bush, "George Herbert Hoover Bush."

P.S. if you want real change vote for Ron Paul.
If the lawyers and lobbyists in Washington are afraid of him that's a "good" thing!

This is only the tip of the iceberg.

Charles Barnett is the nom de plume of an industry insider who writes for the AFP. I found the article quite interesting but not surprising. In it he makes several assertions, and I think these can be checked out for the doubters.

Although I do low carbs, most food depends on grain. Most normal people (unlike me) need bread, pasta, cereal. What's more the meat we eat is fed by grain. Without grain there is no food for the cows, pigs, whatever. Fact of life.

Even though I purport that we need to eat meat because of dietary needs they are still chiefly fed grain of some sort. What we need is the supplements they get from the vets and/or animal husbandry professionals. That is what keeps us alive. The grain they eat is useless, and routinely advanced supplement formulas are put in their food or water. As they absorb and metabolise this, and they subsequently get slaughtered, thereby we get the benefits of those supplements.

But that is not the point, Mr. Barnett has made a point, which comes now. There used to be some reserve. Grain in silos and all that, but no more. What he is saying is that a drought could actually cause food riots. He states that the grain is harvested one day, ground into flour the next, and appears at the grocery store as bread or whatever the next day. He states that there are no reserves whatsoever.

His point is that we are vulnerable, VERY much so.

He made a few other points in the article, for example, most things are grown in the midwest, and 70% of the population lives in coastal regions. They are fed (literally) by two railroads.

Stock up, I mean buy a dep freeze and everything. You can't beat it, but with good planning you can lose a little bit less.

OK so you support one-party left-wing rule?

That worked out well for the Soviets didn't it?

Sanity -> RE: food costs to soar in 08 :-( (12/30/2007 12:36:15 PM)

But wait, Congress is held by the Democrats so by your reasoning we should never elect another Democrat to Congress, only the Presidency - and vise-versa.

Yeah Termy, it's the end of the world.

It's been the end of the world since Bush was elected, and it'll be roses and sunshine the day a Democrat takes office as President, won't it.

"The end is near" <---- here's your sign!

Republicans get so defensive when people point out that they're about to be ousted.  It's cute.

It is refreshing to see that people think politicians are there for what they can get, not the people they so liberally turn to when they want election. So with you in the US,it is really much down to two parties, republicans and democrats, the biggest and most influential.Much the same here, labour or conservative, which boils down to much the same thing as far as the man in the street is concerned, no change, just different words and the same difficulties with bigger holes in the wallet.

The question being, if you want a good change, who do you vote for? I have felt a need for a good change for a good few years , and so have voted for parties with different ideas.Different ideas in that they are totally alien to the two clones, but who knows, if we don't try something different, we will never know, and I am all for trying new things, believing one day, we may get it near right.

Food on the increase, that I have seen here, and those on a low income struggle enough already, what with spiralling heating bills, it is getting increasingly difficult to live, and this is not the third world.I as a student struggle on the food ,heating  and transport front already, I dread what may come later in this coming year.Perhaps when I become qualified in my trade, I will seek a country where they welcome my skills and reward what I do with a fair living. That thought has crossed my mind.,the country of my birth gives me no inclination to stay, and I will say, even tries to prevent my learning to become a more useful and skilled member of society.Quick fix is what this country is all about, quick money and stuff everyone poor enough to be poor.

Oh my, I just came in from the grocery store.
If the prices get much higher I am going to need to advertise here
for a GroceryBuying submissive.
I need a submissive with a fetish to buy me groceries.

Ousted from where? Who's controling congress?

The oldest trick in politics...blame everything on your opponent. Half the Dems in congress voted in favor of the Iraq war including Hillary Clinton.

....of course that means half the Dems voted against the war, an honest question because i don't know.....what percentage of Republicans voted against the war?
Now if it is half, then i see your point......if it isn't then that it is a basis for discussion as to the relative merits of each side.

(edited for poorer than usual grammar)

The connection between that and the price of groceries is escaping me.

Well, the 100's of Billions that they're spending in Iraq is our money.
I'd rather have that money in the hands of The People than be building roads and schools in Iraq anyday!

bipolarber -> RE: food costs to soar in 08 :-( (12/30/2007 6:09:12 PM)

Where's the connection between this and the price of groceries? Okay, since you asked.
Until this last election cycle, both houses of Congress and the executive branch of the US government were held by Republicans. They had been for 6 years running... during that time:

Bush pushed for an "Ownership Society" pushing lending institutions to be freer with the purse strings... (this is what led to the sub-prime mortgage crisis)

Bush, within two months of taking office had to deal with 9/11. His response: attack a country that had nothing to do with the attack. (Saddam and Bin Leiden were enemies, you may recall...) Despite the "Coallition of the Willing" the US has had to bear the brunt of the fight, a little over 90% of the forces there being American, even at the start of the war... You may also recall all the talk about us getting in, changing the regime, and getting back out. The war, the GOP assured us, could be done for under $50 billion. But we got stuck in a quagmire. We had to stay there for years on end. To be able to afford to do so, we've had to borrow heavily from China... to the tune of nearly one trillion US dollars. (roughly 1/9 of the total US national debt.)

Bush's policies did nothing for job creation. In fact, unemployment has been skyrocketing since he took office. (The figues that say it's "stable" are misleading. They don't count the people who have been unemployed for so long that they are no longer eligible for government support.) A lot of these "phantom unemployed" are having to use credit cards to keep food on the table.

So this created a huge national debt. Both by the government, and by the average US citizen.(in fact, since Bush I got into office, it began to punch through the roof... things stablized under Clinton, but then went through the roof again under President "Jr.") What had remained at around negative 4 trillion dollars (from President Washington up until Reagan) is now 9.25 trillion... almost entirely due to GOP rule, of less than a decade and a half.)

Now... along comes a hurricane... and the oil companies (which Bush, and his family are a big part of) sense a good excuse. Despite minimal damage to coastal refineries, gas prices skyrocket. They continue to do so with any minor excuse they can think of... anything from the war reports going badly, to it being a hot summer, or that demand is spiking because a Panda went into heat in China.

Gas impacts everything... all prices on food are goverened by the cost of energy needed to produce it, prepare it for long term storage, and transporting it to market.... plus, each time food changes hands, the previous person adds his own markup to insure a profit...

So, tons of unemployed people here at home, going into crushing debt...

Losing their homes because of unfairly inflating mortgages...

Gas prices making it more and more expensive to produce the kind of bounty that we've seen in years past...

Massive national debt, which will have to be countered with increased taxes...

Causing the economy to spiral into massive inflation.... (Gas, food, transportation, goods and services... all becoming vastly more expensive.)

Thanks George! Thanks GOP held Congress between 1996 to 2004!
