I'm sorry to post here, but I am desperate need of some help!  I have an adult male Pit Bull Terrier here in the Houston area who needs a foster or permanent home ASAP.  I am unable to keep him as I live in a home with 3 other dogs.  I've tried to find the owner and/or find a rescue organization to help over the last week or so to no avail.  If anyone can help him and take him in even temporarily, it would be so greatly appreciated.  He's a real "sweetheart" and has shown no aggression towards me or other people. He loves to be petted and even have his belly rubbed and he takes treats gently from my hand.  He has been separated from the dogs here, but has been playing with a female dog in the neighborhood.  I am not sure how he would do in a household with other pets and/or children.   I'd like to see him go to someone who has some land in the country and/or a fenced back yard.  He's an excellent watchdog and protective of  "his" property.  I am not the original owner, so I don't know his exact age or history.  I'd be willing to answer any and all inquiries to the best of my ability.  My heart is breaking as animal control has been called and the dog will be euthanized as soon as he is in their custody. I'd just like to see him get a "fair share" at a decent life.  Please contact me here for more info. Thank you!

Good luck finding him a home - it's going to be tough. i had a half dobie shepard dog who was a biter and advertised for a long time - i had to be honest as to his temperment but never found him a home.  i had to give him over to a shelter as i was having my first child and would not chance her being bitten. He hated children and old people.  The dog was abused by my psycho brother and when he had to get rid of him i took him in - he was a sweetheart and very loyal and loving to me.  It broke my heart.

I am very sorry,I wish you luck but the odds are not good, having worked in animal rescue myself it is one of the painful lessons to learn that you cannot save them all, there is such a massive flood of animals needing homes and most breed rescues are overload and pretty much are forced into a postion where they can only take ones with proven histories and or papers,  any large breed or breeds with a reputation for agression even if falsely so is extremely hard to find places to accept them,  I am in Ontario where a pit bull ban exists so absolutely can be of no help to you.  If I was in the same boat as you and the only option left is euthansia, I would be taking the dog to my own vet and hold it and love/comfort  it right to the end, rather than turn it over to animal control where it would leave this world frightened and confused amid uncaring strangers, to me the extra dollars out of my pocket would be worth that much.

I went to google and entered "pit bull rescue texas" and came up with quite a few different organizations. If you do the same and contact them I am quite certain you will find the help you are looking for.

Hopefully this dog is neutered, it will make placement much easier. If not he should be ASAP. Also, any and all information you have about his background, vet info and temperment will assist them in caring for the dog and finding it the best home possible.

A side note.Don`t be discouraged at all,by the negitive things said here.It`s mostly from ignorance.(Popeye [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m23.gif[/image])

It may be hard to place him,but it hard to place dogs in general,unless they`re "cute wittle puppys".After that ,the chances go down.

Stick with the pup yourself,and ask everyone you know.Ask them to ask there friends/associates.There`s plenty of farms and ranches,that would take him.Don`t be discouraged,it will take time.

If you take him to the shelter,he may not get placed for a very long time.Stick with him yourself,till you find a good home.It will happen.

One more side note.(addressed to folks in general,not the OP)

Dogs are like children.They shouldn`t be taken in,only to be given away,anymore than you would give your kids away.They aren`t play things,existing only for our pleasure and edification.
These noble animals love and give and love some more.They aren`t disposable or to be treated like an unwanted couch or old shoes.They`re living things ,that adore us,and would die for us.They miss us,long to be around us,and will be loyal buddies, who are always happy to see us.They should be given more consideration.

If you take a dog in,you take it for life.They shouldn`t be given up b/c you`re having a baby,or moving to a place that doesn`t allow dogs,or because it`s convenient.Unless you absolutely know you can and will keep it,you shouldn`t get a dog in the 1st place.
It`s easy to not get a dog.Sounds simple,but it`s true.The time for rejecting a dog,is before you get him.Not after.If you take a dog in,you take it for life.

I agree with  Owner59 for the most part. I have had some good and some bad pits over the years as well as  walker coonhounds there are good and bad dogs in every breed, people over react because of the name, I had a red nose bitch that all of my ums watched have pups and played with them until they were old enough to go out doors also I took on another that was broken and I had to have put down, after six months working with her she still  hated everything and everyone I was lucky I never got bit spent an hour every day after work holding and petting that girl and I would walk away and she would growl and snarl at me lol I have an ex like that same story  smiles

 Pets are expensive.  Mine go to the groomer every month $140, they get their flea meds, they have their toys, their expensive food because one is allergic to corn.

One has pins in his front leg from jumping and breaking it - an ortho for a dog is $4000.  One had surgery on his eye due to an ulcer $2400 and will need eye drops as he ages.  They are half way thru their expected life span.

How about becoming homeless or having to pick between meds for you and food for your animal as some seniors are having to do now?   So you're going to die for your animal?  Great...then who will take care of it after you're gone?    What about the pet who was not a problem at all and you had not a clue that they would turn once you had your child?  Guess which one would win between the two in my home. 

People cannot see into the future, they don't expect these kinds of things to happen when they get a pet, but they do.

That's all fine and good until your dog becomes a nuisance to other people.  I hear this same nonsense about pit bulls and rotweillers all the time; it's the owner not the dog.  Yet, pit bulls and rotweillers are responsible for 50-65% of all dog bite fatalities in the U.S. and Canada depending on the study you look at.  There is a good reason these dogs are banned in a lot of areas.  They were bred for fighting and animal baiting, and they have that temperment.  They usually are fine with their own family, but they don't play well with other dogs and strangers.  I understand that people love their dogs, but your love for a pet doesn't override public safety.  

About 9 years ago, I had neighbors that had two pit bulls.  The damn things were constantly running loose, and scaring the shit out of everyone in the neighborhood.  The owners always had the same story when you complained to them.  They said they were harmless, and that people shouldn't worry.  They completely ignored what the damn beasts were doing.  They were chasing kids in the neighborhood and menacing everyone that had the misfortune to run into them.  They attacked other dogs in the neighborhood.  We lived outside the city limits, so there was no animal control officers.  I called the sheriff to make sure I had a right to shoot them if they came up in our yard.  My girlfriend at the time had a beagle, and it got out occasionally too.  The big difference is that beagles don't attack people usually, and they are certainly non-threatening.  Eventually we moved, so it wasn't our problem anymore.  I won't tolerate people living near me with vicious animals.  Either they control their animals, or I will.  Cities and suburbs are not acceptable places to have dogs like that.

I'd take him temporarily(probably turn into permanent), but I'm in IL. Already have two dogs. As far as some dogs being more violent than others as some have mentioned. I've had more than a few dogs, and every dog I've ever owned, has been non-violent in general except when fighting over females, more or less. I think the reason some breeds attack more is because people train them to attack more. Why get a beagle to attack when you can get a pit bull. Anyway, I've only seen a correlation between mean doggies and bad owners. No doubt more bad owners get pitbulls, not that pitbulls are devil spawn.

If spindle top is still a viable organization, I'd start there. I know of two active rescue in Dallas that *might* be able to help if they have available foster homes. Unfortunately those are few and far between for every rescue right now - it's the annual holiday dog dump.

I found a pb pup not long ago and couldn't get her into rescue b/c they didn't have a foster home, and I couldn't foster her myself. She was as sweet as can be. Fortunately I placed her in a home through friends of friends of friends. When I was trying to get her into rescue, I came across a number of rescues who were no longer in operation in TX.

PM me on the other side if you need the contact info for the Dallas orgs.  There's a 99.9% chance that a pit will be immediately euthanized if taken to a shelter or humane society, regardless of temperment. Sad, but true.

They should still be viable, they just got a few grants recently. I know a couple of their volunteers, and they will drive a couple of thousand miles to rescue a pit if they have room, or if nothing else they know who may have room and resources.

NeedToUseYou, We adopted a Pit/Boxer mix, we named him dumb-dumb.  He's a big bubbling lovey dovey fool.  Never would hurt a fly.  Until two hours ago, he bit one of my puppies on the head and slung it around for no reason.  Now my puppy is in a box, and theres nothing I can do for it but make it comfortable until it dies[:(].  Pit bulls have been bred improperly so long that a lot of them can be a bit loopy.  But I will agree and say many bad owners do have agressive dogs...they make them that way.  I would not reccommend a pit bull for anyone who has other dogs.  Period.  Not even other pit bulls.  They are unpredictable, even in the most experienced hands.

What's keeping the Houston ASPCA from taking the Dog?

I guess you don't want to hear this but it looks as though you're going to have to make a drive to the pound.

I'd consider taking him but we already have three dogs ourselves and a baby due in late March.

A well bred pitbull is by no means unpredictable, the were purpose bred to be good with people but they were also bred to be other animal agressive,  it is like with me having greyhounds they are soft natured generally very good with adult, but do not tolerate rough handling so children need to be taught to be gentle with them,   many have strong prey drive  and if they see a small cat or dog running it can trigger their preydrive.   Owners need to understand the nature of the breeds they own and accept those traits,  for me that means my greyhound do not offleash runs  other than at fully enclose dog parks that are designated for larger dogs only, and kept on leash any other time or in my securely fenced yard with gate checked to ensure it is locked.   If  I owned a pitbull I would have to keep in mind they may not always be good with other animals and respect that part of their nature and then as an owner it my obligation to ensure I never put the dog in a position where it's nature becomes a danger to another animal.   

As for mixing puppies with older adult dogs it is always risky because and older dog is not going to always tolerates the antics/and energy of puppies.    My one dog used to go to huge events to promote different breeds, doing a 4 hour showings often being handled by several hundred children and adults of all ages the toddlers would use him as a pillow, stick their hands in his mouth, look in his ears of mouth, he was very comfortable handling that much attention, nothing phased him, but he is now older, still loves people and attention alot but I also recognize the fact he gets tired sooner,  some of his joints will be more sensitive now  and his abdomen gets tender at times, so shows like that would become uncomfortable for him and their is a greater chance he would become cranky after a while,  so 3 years ago he was retired from  the last big show event inorder to play it safe   and I would never want to risk having possibly growl  or nip at a child, even at home with the grandchildren I supervised closely ensuring the youngest does not accidently trip over him and watch for any signs of restless or avoidness as soon as the first signs are present a baby gate goes up to seperate dog and children, I also have 2 very shy dogs who I automatically seperate from the grandchildren, inorder to protect them from ever becoming fear biters. 

Though pit bull may produce the most serious bite injuires they are not the most common dog to end up biting children,   the labrador is and the most common reason is because  owners do not respect the dogs needs  inorder to ensure bite prevention, they automatically assume the dog should never be intolerant of even rough handling by children or that they should tolerate being fallen on when they are older and now suffering from pain  from arthritis or hip dysplaysia, if we were in that postion we would instinctually use are hands to roughly get the child off of us because the pain is so intense at the time, but dog does not have hands so they use their mouth instead, which then become labeled as a bite and owners not understanding beleive their dog has now suddenly turned vicious to children and is now dangerous so they destroy the dog, there was absolutely wrong with the dog, it all boiled down to owners having unrealistic expectations  and therefore neglected the dogs needs which result in the situation occuring, and sadly that is the case with the majority of dogs bites, most are preventible if common sense is used.

I agree with Maya,
those 2 pits mentioned above were probably bred with staff which was also pit bull in the 70s but they changed the name so the UKC would accept them now their bred for show and gaurd work, now the staffy people are not going to be happy I said that but trace the lines, also if its a blue pit bull its a staff even if its registered as a pit. many people cross breed pits for gaurd work which is really dumb they are bred for catch and hold so when they bite they really tear you up and I disagree with someones stats last I knew cocker spaniels were the biggest biters but they dont do as much damage and the news papers turn any dog into a pit bull that has muscles I remember an article where this cop got attacked by 2 pits in Cal. they were actually registered labs, true story but they went to the papers as pit bulls
