I dunno, but it sounds like something that would be as bad as a strawberry shortcake.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say:

"The candy cane was originally a straight, hard, and all-white candy stick invented by French priests in the early 1400s. The cane shape is traditionally credited to a choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral in Germany, who, legend has it, in 1670 bent straight sugar sticks into canes to represent a shepherd's staff, and gave them to children at church services. Whether the choirmaster had the Good Shepherd in mind is unknown. Another theory is that, as people decorated their Yule trees with food, the bent candy cane was invented as a functional solution. Candy with red stripes first appeared in the early 1900s. Postcards before 1900s show only white colored candy canes, but postcards after 1900s display red striped candy canes."

I had heard the one about it being created to symbolise Jesus, being J shaped, and the red and white being the purity and blood of Christ, I checked out snopes tho:)

This is what I learned growing up:

First of all, it is hard candy because Christ is the rock of ages. This hard candy was shaped so that it would resemble a “J” for Jesus or, turned upside down, a shepherd’s staff. It was made white to represent the purity of Christ. A red stripe was added to represent the blood Christ shed for the sins of the world, and three thinner red stripes for the stripes He received on our behalf when the Roman soldiers whipped Him. Sometimes a green stripe is added as a reminder that Jesus is a gift from God.
The flavor of the cane is peppermint, which is similar to hyssop. Hyssop is in the mint family and was used in the Old
Testament for purification and sacrifice. Jesus is the pure Lamb of God, come to be a sacrifice for the sins of the world.

Psalm 51:7 states,
"Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean,
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow."

Hehe.. like all the meanings.
as it is still in my coat pocket, what i can remember is that it was shaped in the form of a "J" for Jesus, and the red stripe is for the blood he shed...when i get my butt up to fish in the pocket, i will recite the wrapper's meaning.
Thank you all!
