Sanity -> Never Marry & Live To 116 Years Of Age? (12/17/2007 7:39:27 PM)

quote:

World's 'oldest' person dies aged 116 after putting his long life down to never marrying

He attributed his longetivity to the fact that he had never married.

But at 116, age finally caught up with Hryhoriy Nestor, the man thought to have been the oldest in the world....

...Mr Nestor was born in March 1891, when Ukraine was part of the Tsar's Russian empire.

He lived through the 1917 Revolution, the German occupation of Ukraine in 1941 and the break-up of the Soviet Union.

Having been married or not, the guy still died.

Who wants to live the longest vs living the happiest? So marriage wasn't for him. Good for him. Perhaps he died happy.

As for me, I'd rather die having been with someone instead of living alone forever.

Who says you have to live alone forever unless you get married?

lazarus1983 -> RE: Never Marry & Live To 116 Years Of Age? (12/17/2007 11:17:28 PM)

Good for him.

Now, as a fellow single guy, I'm going to go do whatever I want. All the time.

Somehow, I'm not surprised.

I have made the point in other threads about happiness.  It is something one finds within oneself, in my opinion.  One who is not happy will not be happy being married, riding a wave rider, vacationing in Bali, serving as a Blackwater mercenary, etc.

I am happy this guy put down never having been married as the reason for his longevity, but I tend to blame his long life on telomeres and an absence of risk factors for things that kill people younger than 116.

Sinergy

p.s.  For those playing the home game, a telomere is a bit of DNA that falls off the end when the cell divides.  When enough DNA has fallen off the cell, the cell is no longer able to survive replication.  Outside estimates of the ability of the human body to continue to rebuild itself through cellular mitosis put the outer limits of the body's longevity around 130 years old.  There is a natural selection reason for this; nature has determined there is not a great deal of need to keep human beings around beyond the time they need to be around to procreate.

For me, the key to happiness is a good sense of humor and the ability to let go of negativity.  Look at George Burns and Bob Hope.  They laughed and made people laugh and hit triple digits.  I would guess that bitterness cuts into a person's lifespan, so I'm trying to avoid it.  It's worth a shot at least.

In accordance with his wish that there should be no crying, a hearty meal was served of his favourite dishes: warm potato and herring, and cabbage with home-made sausage.

He loved to get outside and would run barefoot through the grass. Vodka he drank in moderation, and his favourite food was simple country fare with his greatest luxury a slice of sausage in a bread roll.

Life could certainly be worse.

So, I guess that all women are programed by nature to die shortly after menopause?  [:D]

Wow, never knew all that. Very interesting!
Hmm, so being single may help me in the end?  lol
Nods, as long as you are happy...a key base.

LOL. I think the majority of people in the past were damn lucky to make it to 70.

awmslave -> RE: Never Marry & Live To 116 Years Of Age? (12/18/2007 12:46:30 PM)

How much marrying/not marrying was a factor for his lonevity is not clear. The single case does not prove anything. It could be he had lived even longer if married. Isn't it a good motive to stay alive and outlive his forth bitchy wife for example.

lol... I'm sure some men would prefer that programming was timed to kick in BEFORE they had to experience their female partner in menopause.

Would suck from this end, though.

The comment about never marrying does seem to be a joke..

Women can be overly senstive pains that cause a bit too much drama at times, but we still love 'em, right?  Heh.

On a somewhat scientific note, I believe the studies I've seen before argue that marriage typically contributes to one's longevity.

Tried to wade through all the BS it has on it's site, and the"RealAge" test, but finally gave up in disgust.

They actually expect anyone to go through, or know, all that shit?
