Umm- do you know that old joke about the guy who walks into the doc and says- OK doc- what's up?  The doc says you have high blood pressure and a blocked artery- I want to operate immediately!  Guy says- gee doc- I want a second opinion.  OK, says the doc- you're ugly too.

I just googled shoulder fusion surgery- and my off the cuff read is that you're 22 and they want to do this to you?  Umm, have you gotten a second opinion- or maybe a third?  Does the doc who proposed this really have good credentials- are they part of a teaching hospital for instance?  You should be able to find some good docs in St. Louis- Washington University has a pretty good med school IIRC.  Have you called their orthopod department and asked for a consult with one of the people that teach there?  I don't think I'd be in a tearing hurry to go under the knife unless you're sure that you need to- and the procedure that they're talking about sounds like it will leave you with some permanent limitations.  So unless you've done the second opinion bit, I'd be a bit hesitant.

i have a genetic disorde that causes my joints to be unstable, i am going to washington univercity center for advnaced medicne with dr yamaguchi, the guy who wrote the book on this, and this is the only way to fix me. my shoulder falls out of place the a/c is torn completely the nerve dmage is spreading and so is the weakness.they will open my shoulder grind away thecartaladge some bone so there is fresh marrow take a bon graft from my hip and then put it in place with pins the graft if it takes will cause the ball joint to fuse witht the socket. this is my 5 and final surgury on my arm. the only thing im truely afraid of is logically i knw this is the only way to fix it but i keep second guessing my self esp since i have 2 little girls.i miss out on so much as it is being afriad of a bad dislocation after the pt and stuff my shoulder will be stable and a lot less pain. but i wont be able to catch them when they come running for a hug that may just be worth the pain [&o]

ill only have about 25 % use of my arm

That's all up to you and rehab. Put in 110 % and I'm sure your arm will be doing more than 25. For sure, you will not be able to do everything exactly how you have been doing them. However, you will adapt, figure out how to get past your obsticles, and continue to live a productive life.

If you know for a shadow without a doubt that your arm will be useless, change your procedure to "Arm Removal" so you may get an artificial limb

It's your call. Best of luck. When doing your therapy, remember that P.T. really stands for Pain and Torture.

Sounds like you've done your homework and the surgery is a reasonable way to proceed.   Having a mom not be in pain will matter more to your kids than how tightly you hug them.  Best of luck-
